Roberto Remigio Benigni (Castiglion Fiorentino, 27 October 1952) is an Italian actor, comedian, director and screenwriter.
Known and popular theatrical monologist, with an ironic and irreverent comedy, he has become one of the best known and appreciated public figures in Italy and in the world. His cinematographic interpretations and his television appearances stage a joyful and impetuous character, leveraging, in the latter, on the subversion of the climate of the programs of which he is a guest. Among the many awards worth mentioning is the Oscar for best actor, achieved in 1999 for the interpretation in the film (directed by himself) La vita è bella; followed by an Oscar for the best foreign film for the same film. He was the only Italian male performer to receive the Oscar for best leading actor in the main role in a foreign language film, after the one won by Anna Magnani in 1956 and Sophia Loren in 1962.
Benigni worked as a reader, interpreter by heart and commentator on Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, for which he was nominated for the Nobel Prize for literature 2007. [1] In the role of popularizer, he also recited the Canto degli Italiani, the fundamental principles of the Constitution of the Italian Republic and the ten biblical commandments receiving public and critical acclaim.
