In 1967 Royal Liverpool had the honour of hosting The 96th Open Championship.
One year after Jack Nicklaus won his first Open Championship, he returned to The Open along with previous winners Gary Player, Peter Thomson, Del Nagle, Bob Charles, Bobby Locke and Max Faulkner. All were hoping for renewed glory in July 1967.
It was not to be a successful defence for Nicklaus though, as the Claret Jug was won by Argentina’s Roberto De Vicenzo. Nicklaus would have to settle for runner-up this time around.
This was De Vicenzo’s first and only major victory. He was making his 9th Open appearance after finishing in the top 10 in his previous eight efforts, even coming runner-up in 1950.
The tournament was hotly contested and saw 130 players from across the globe compete in an attempt to win the Claret Jug and be named the Champion Golfer of the Year.

Bloody marvelous. So atmospheric, the dulcet tones of Henry Longhurst, the Golden bear making the game look easy and a great champion in Roberto De Vincenzo. Golf seemed to much more gentlemanly back then.

Gary Player with his 'so called Ping putter' remarks Henry Longhurst. Hard to believe back in 1967 Ping was an up and coming brand with a totally new design ethos.

Looks like the Anser designed a year earlier. Jacklin won the 69 open and 70 us open with a Ping A-blade.
