The build up to the fight was great. Tito had dominated the welterweight division and was in his prime. Hopkins had dominated the middleweight division and was supposed to be old. This fight launched a new career for Hopkins and he fought until he was 50. Impressive resume and great career.

I wore this VHS tape out back in the day. Its a master class in proper technique. When one of Hopkins’ hands is punching the other is near his chin. The shoulder rolls, the footwork, the game plan were all impeccable.

This was a very underrated fight. Folks wanna see fighters beat the hell out of each other or a quick KO, or an out of the blue KO that stuns the crowd. Bernard literally took this guy that so many put up on a pedestal to school. Finished him in the 12th round with a KO. This is masterful boxing. This should not go unnoticed.

One of the best fights of all time, an absolute master class by Bernhard Hopkins. Credit as well to Felix Trinidad, it’s a miracle he stayed on his feet for as long as he did. He kept coming forwards, even after nearly being knocked down several times. Great spirit and great heart, but not the smartest game plan, against someone of Hopkins’ statue. He kept his composure brilliantly, and patiently bought Trinidad’s, one way ticket to the canvas and kept himself out of harms way from Trinidad. A perfectly timed performance. This was the Golden Age of the Middleweights and Hopkins is the King of that age.

It's such a shame that HBO will no longer do boxing, they presented this broadcast (Big George's weird commentary aside) perfectly, just the right level of reverence, but not too much. Realising that the reason people wanted to watch was to get somewhat back to normal, and see a fight they'd been looking forward to until those awful events.

Odds makers made Bernard Hopkins a 3:1 underdog. Felix Trinidad was 29 years old and held a record of 40-0 with 33 knockouts. Even more impressive is that he was 20-0 with 16 knockouts in world title fights. Hopkins, The Executioner, was 36 years old, posting a record of 39-2-1 with only 18 knockouts. Many believed Hopkins was fading and saw this bout as a mere pit stop on the road for Trinidad towards an ultimate showdown with Roy Jones Jr. But BHop, inspired to 'fight for his country' after the recent 9/11 attacks, had other ideas.

Who did Joppy beat at 160 that made him special to think Tito belonged at 160? @El Lobo You also need to remember that Oscar didn't have neither the size or strength to do what Hopkins did. Hopkins' versatility combined with his will and conditioning made Trinidad look like a one-dimensional fighter. Trinidad never seemed to be able to learn and make adjustments as the fight progressed. Hopkins, despite backing up some of the time, won almost every exchange and then cleverly either got out to the side or tied Felix up. He controlled the fight despite Trinidad being the one moving forward most of the time. It takes a real master to make that kind of a strategy work. Hopkins' conditioning and great chin also served him well -- Trinidad didn't throw nearly as many punches, but a few of his hard shots did land and Hopkins wasn't fazed. Styles make interesting fights, and in this one, Hopkins adopted a style and strategy that probably surprised Trinidad, and Trinidad was never able to solve it. This was one of the most technically interesting fights I've ever seen.

I’m still here for these legends. I watched this fight live in Wyoming Correctional Facility in Attica New York. There was almost a race riot between the Puerto Ricans and Blacks. There was so much tension in the jail that night it was crazy. Cooler heads prevailed besides a few little sparks here and there. Good times.

But people should have known after he RJJ pure hell at a time when no one else could compete with him in 1993. Jones was just incredible at that time and Bernard fought with him on even terms...and wasn't given a rematch until much, much later.
@johnniea4684

@@thomaspondysh957 Jones beat him easily in 1993. Was a dull fight but Hopkins barely landed anything. Plodded around after Jones getting picked off. Was naturally a defence-first fighter himself (as he showed against Trinidad) and wasn't about to go throwing against someone as fast and hard punching as a peak Jones was, so lost pretty meekly. Trinidad was made to measure for him, really. Naturally smaller and walked after him on straight lines with a low punch output. The Jones rematch was a farce. Roy should not have been licensed, his punch resistance and reflexes were totally gone. Hopkins was faded also, but hadn't been getting knocked around like Jones had. Why anyone paid PPV for that joke fight I have no idea.

Now this fight was a masterclass. Hopkins was 40 and Trinidad had just moved up beating two top fighters at 160. Trinidad was the favorite with his fearsome hook. @@el34glo59 Tyson retired at 38, but was declining before that. Jones jr looked unbeatable until his reflexes slowed a hair and he was knocked out at 35, Lennox walked away from boxing at 37. 36 is past it in boxing years. You never had a prime. Hopkins was a freak that boxed until he was 50 and won a world championship at 49. Older fighters rely on tricks and traps to keep the young lions ineffective. Tito was an undefeated monster at 40-0 with belts in 3 divisions that had ran through everyone with 33 ko's.

Tito was always a one dimensional fighter. He was going to plod forward with his herky jerky movement looking to hook the body and double it upstairs. Bernard being the much bigger naturally was better able to deal with him physically. He also had the boxing fundamentals to beat Tito to the punch and break him down when at any distance. Bernard had a tool box that he used to slow unscrew and dismantle Tito. Tito came with a sledgehammer looking to bust down Hopkins.

Lenny Hall He was kind of over-rated, though he was decent. His KO win against Joppy is why so many people thought he could bring his power up to middleweight and beat Hopkins, but Hopkins was really underestimated at the time. The really good thing that came out of this fight was Hopkins finally got the recognition he deserved. I think he would have retired in relative obscurity had this fight never happened.
