Roberto nailed it right here. We didn't want to get stuck into one niche but it's really hard to get consistently recommended if your vids are all over the place which in turn is what gets you views. Recommended makes up a lot of those high view counts and not your subs. So the easier you make it for KZbin to know who you are as a channel the easier it is for them to recommend your vids consistently. We tried to fight it for a long time but then the success of some vids dictated where we ended up going. Luckily we really enjoy the niche we are in so we are having lots of fun with it but as a long term strategy I have been thinking about how do we branch out to protect ourselves in the long haul and also grow beyond the niche.

I've only recently started a gaming channel on youtube and I'm already thinking I need a different niche. My audience was NOT my target audience. I thought the majority of my views would come from females 25-34. But my main audience is 45-54 and then 35-44 is 2nd. My audience retention is always at 70% or more BUT my videos are very very short so nothing to brag about. Small tweak that you didn't directly mention is I am trying to make longer videos. Viewers that watch videos like mine or videos that I show up as a suggested are 2 to 3 times longer than my videos. I find it funny when people comment or mention you not having x××× amount of views or subscribers. Some of the best basketball coaches never even played college ball. Coaching and playing the game are two different passions and things. I did pause this for a snack break to make popcorn 😂

I run into the problem with doing a variety of videos like you said. Coming from a journalistic background, I understand the need for evergreen content, which is what keeps my channel views coming in. Two years ago I did a beard product review, which I still do, that brings me several hundred views a month. Also focusing on specific camera and drone topics allows for more growth. When it comes to my hiking videos, I know I am only going to get that initial spike in views and likes with in the first week since I drive most of my traffic from my social media pages. It finally clicked to me... If I create videos, say 10, that keep bringing in 100 views a month, that is 1000 views a month. If I keep that up and keep creating videos that can keep that pace if not better, then I will keep growing. Learned a lot from you Roberto. Keep it up.

I haven’t even started yet, so I’m no expert, but I’ve seen and follow several people that have second (third) channels. That allows them to focus their main channel content and do what they want on their other. For example: Main channel is a Reaction channel for videos or movie trailers, but their second channel is about gaming. Helps if you have a loyal subscriber base that you can mention the second channel to so that you aren’t starting from scratch.

One aspect that nobody talk about is "Hard work" vs "Effective work". For ex we put zero tags because we did a lot of testing in the past and putting tags was simply not worth it when comparing data. The value of it was slightly positive but clearly not enough to care about it. We shifted the focus to answering more comments instead. Where ur views come from (Subs vs Non Subs) mostly depend if ur content is trendy or not. If it's really niche u need a much bigger initial boost from ur Subs.
