Roberto, thanks to the videos from you and Rivers I went for the Z64. Unfortunately the Minix server did not have enough bandwidth and it took me over 9 hours to FOTA update. After another day of trying to get Kodi 14.1 to work, I upgraded to 14.2 and was able to set it up the way I like. The word is Minix is expanding the upgrade bandwidth, so I encourage people to hang in there, improvements are on the way. Newest update was 38 MB on March 7th.

The windows version has more options for music. You can use the full version of Spotify without paying for premium. So guests can pick specific songs in your playlist and you can add their recommendations. Also, Tidal is a new HD music service. Lossless audio is only available for chrome browser, desktop app, and only for a couple android phones. The whathifi review said no lossless for HTC and Samsung phones. I wouldnt wait around for Minix support. So with a music setup in the living room, maybe go with windows Z64.

Hi Roberto, Another nice video. One thing you didn't mention about the differences is the lack of the digital audio on the z64. The X8-H plus has the SPDIF connector whereas the z64 does not.

It seems that it needs a lot of work from the dev team but when well built then great machines!! It can also be a bit dangerous to get a unbranded box with a S905 cause if they haven't done theyre work well we going to get stuck with a paper weight :) The U1 is superior to the Vega S95 but 2 great machines compared to the older version of boxes with S805

Hello Roberto. First of all, great work! I've watched a number of your videos, and you always make solid presentations, to the point, fact-based, but also in an accessible and likeable manner. My question here is this: how important do you consider the lack of gigabit Ethernet on the z64? I mainly want the machine for streaming from my desktop machine to my TV, and I was wondering if 100mbps vs 1gbps makes a serious difference when streaming 1080p for example. Thanks!

Regarding your question in my opinion using the X8 H Plus Gigabit or the Z64 with 100mbs i feel no difference at all playing demanding files MKV 1080p or 4K files. I do honestly think that it doesn't have that big impact as we see on the spreadsheet with specs. Bottom line :) i can play anything in both devices with the same performance :) Regarding the responsiveness we feel the difference in loading aps with the Z64 being faster. Hope it helps. RJ

Dr. Alex M. Mathioudakis 120 is a great price :) I always use Kodi and always trough ethernet. I have a NAS just for my Media so i can stream from any device at my home without having to transfer files between drives. Everything is centralized witch really helps a lot. RJ

Hi RJ, Tx for your insight. I agree that Minix didn't upgrade, but made a next step in new sizes of technology. I went from huge pc housing to barebones and now welcome as a mini pc, the Minix (not for gaming). And I couldn't resist though to also buy and explore the Android version and now compare also for myself. Your opinion is that the Android version is more suitable for media playing (more dedicated, perhaps) and the Windows version also is suitable for a more general use, since a lot of the office like applications are possible. Still I am getting stuck in the media part comparing 3D movies, something a lot of people use the mediaplayer for I imagine. Did you test and compare the 3D video compatibilty between the two? Jason Santiago Hi Jason, do NOT rely on Antuntu for the capabilities of these machines. I haven't had the chance to review the Tronsmart, i do believe that its a great machine non the less. But benchmarks are not always correct. If you check the playlist about all the reviews that ive made so far ive seen machines performing in benchmarks as high as 40K but then barely play a game or video without problems. If i have the chance to grab a Tronsmart AW80 i will share in the channel. All the Best. RJ

Hi Jorge. Thanks for all the videos. I just got the minix X8-H Plus last week but had to send it back. I installed the NBCSN app which I watch a lot as I have subscription. Unfortunately it was watchable. But the same app on my old MX111 1gb played it perfectly. Was I just unlucky with the box I got. Having just watched your video thinking of getting the Z64 Android. Was I just unlucky with X8? Would the Z64 be better for that particular app? Thank you.

Some times there are aps that are incompatible and not optimized for some cpu´s. i think that is that particular app did not work in your X8 H Plus will not work in any other. I would suggest either trying the Z64 or the new minix U1 which is working great and fast :). I cannot assure that will work with the app, there are thousands of aps and only after testing we will get the 100% sure if it works or not. My suggestion is to get the machine on Amazon so that if you are not happy you can ask for a refund / replacement without any questions :) Hope it helps and let us know how it goes if possible off course :) All the Best. But you can go to the Minix Foruns and you will find there all the info to update. But even if you don't update you will have a great experience. As I am more interested in the Neo Z64 products, here are my questions (if you could answer them please): 1. I am more interested in the Windows 8.1 version, but you mentioned that Windows can be installed on the Minix Z64 Android version, right? If yes, is it like a dual boot? Like -let's say- Ubuntu and Windows on a normal PC? 2. In the Android version video, you showed that you can mirror your mobile screen to the TV using Minix (I remember that you didn't have an Android mobile to demonstrate the mirroring feature). Does the Minix Windows version have this capability? Thank you so much again.

Tharwat Al-Qaisi Hi Tharwat. Thanks for the feedback and glad that was helpful. Regarding your questions. 1- It is possible to dual boot as any other machine, but i havent tried. You should head over to minix foruns and check the videos of some users there using dual boot and it will be more helpful than i can, just ask your questions there and the comunity is very helpful. 2- I believe that there is software to achieve that and if you have a windows machine you can check for that. On my particular case i only use OSX or IOS to Android for our needs using the airpin pro app included in any minix machine. The Windows version is a more versatile machine but also less capable in my opinion as a media player in general. I do prefer the Android as media player and the Windows as a office machine, plex server etc. Sorry that the answers are not conclusive at all but being as honest as i can. All the Best. RJ

cionica Hi Cionica, to be honest i cant really tell witch one is the best one as i only have the Neo M1, so if you are looking for a simple remote that one will be great. If you need more functions as keyboard function and such then i would suggest going with the Neo 2. The only downside that i see on these remotes personally is that its with internal battery that lasts about 4 days and sometimes i forget to charge and when im watching something on the bedroom the remote goes dead :) . So make sure you charge it. All the Best. RJ

ziggy8757 Hi, the hardware is the same but i haven't tested the Zotac Pico, so i cant say how it will work specially regarding temps as its a smaller form factor and it seems to me thats a bit more expensive than the minix model. Without testing it cant say much more. The Minix Z64 i have tested troughly leaving on night and day playing as a Plex server to push it up and no probs whatsoever in anyway. Hope it helps. RJ

Sahairi Ramri Hi Sahairi, my opinion is that the wifi is just not enough for any machine if you want to enjoy high quality content. I use powerline adapter to solve this issue. I also have a Wifi Ac and altough the boxes show a nice speed in benchmarks when i play a 1080p MKV that is 20GB not good so humm i would not go for wifi in any box, not just this one. On the other hand if its just for web browsing or low quality files playback the wifi will be enough. RJ

On the Z64 or X8 H Plus you can stream anything from your computer to the living room tv but you cannot play them. For that particular feature you should look at the nvidia shield (But you will need a nice Nvidia GPU on your PC). All the Best. RJ

Hey man and thanks for the feedback. Personally i prefer Android over windows for the tv experience as the android UI is more friendly for TV. But regarding Netflix, the Minix U1 will give you SD quality and the windows Z83-4 will give you Full HD in the browser so humm its a tuff call If it was only Kodi and some android gaming the U1 but Netflix depends on how important its for you Hope it helps RJ 👍

I would also like to ask a question: I would like to buy the X8H PLUS to use in my living room. I would like to keep in on most of the time (like I would keep a computer) and just have it download content for me all day and night. I would also need a permanently connect hard disk, to allow me to store all of my downloads. Is the device build for it? Is it ok to have it download all the time (again, like a computer) and have a hard disk connected to it? Will that affect performance? +Lev Zimin Hi Lev, although that is possible i would strongly suggest using a NAS unit, will make your life a lot easier. Just connect the NAS to your router make the NAS being responsible for the downloads without having any computer on and on your Minix just configure once where your files are on the NAS and you will have a great experience. I do use my NAS to centralize all my media library's and then i can play from any machine in my house. Hope it helps. RJ

+Brandon Soh Hi Brandon, yep if you use Kodi like i do, once i place a new movie in my NAS the Minix (KODI) Will get the covers and so on for that movie, really easy to use and wife aproval :) I mean wife aproval because since she learned how to use kodi, it doesn't matter which box i have on the bedroom and she always knows how to operate with it, she just needs to see the Kodi short cut and that it hehe!! I want a moderately small box to take on travels sometimes, that can run all video & subtitle formats on XBMC/KODI and performs well enough Full HD & HD. I also want it for KZbin & Netflix watching. Price is a deciding factor for me, but I do not want to abandon quality. Which one would you recommend me the most?

One thing worth noting if that the z64 uses an Intel chipset whilst the x8-h plus doesn't (this is presumably why the z64 can run windows). One side-effect of this is that the z64 doesn't support remote apps (i.e. using your mobile as a mouse/remote with Google TV Remote). This appears to be due to the Intel chipset and Minix are looking into this: www.minixforum.com/threads/remote-app.4402/ It's a small thing, but it's made me wish I'd bought the x8-h plus now and not the z64...

Hi Roberto, Great review. In my opinion the market is now leaning toward Windows OS, since Windows gives you more flexibility. My prediction is that the Android machines will slowly fade out, and the Windows boxes will take their place. I do not understand why Minix released a box based on the Intel chipset that runs Android. As you said, the X8H+ is not obsolete, and even is more capable since it can play 4K. I think that the current generation of Windows based boxes are still not fully capable, and are a bit lacking in H/W. The boxes need a USB 3.0 port, and also maybe eSATA. The next generation of Windows based boxes, or the one after that are the ones to buy.

+Alan Shine Hey again Alan, for a 4K tv i always suggest a box with native 4K output so the X8 H Plus or U1 are 2 great choices, but at this moment although the X8 H Plus is still a superior machine the U1 has the new S905 CPU that although inferior had a major upgrade from the old S805, and its making the U1 fighting with big guns like Z64 or X8 H Plus. I believe that the U1 will deliver everything that you need from a box and if you check the individual review of the X8 H Plus and the U1 you will see that there are amazing things on the U1 like fast storage and capability of plying 10Bit videos etc. Hope it helps. Hi, yep Z64 is still a great machine :) Unfortunately Intel droped support on Android last year because it lost the market to Arm Cortex which are cheapee and stronger... the point is that every single Android device with Intel Cpu´s were dropped by Intel like the Z64 and Minix will not be able do anything or any other brand for a fact. The X8H Plus which is older than the Z64 as its a Arm Cortex machine got updated to Lollipop 5.1 and maybe will get 6 but Z64 wont unfortunately. I would suggest using SPMC instead of Kodi and off course knowing its not the same its the closest we can get (and im not sure if SPMC is supporting below android 5.1) There is also another solution which is to turn the Z64 into a windows Mini Pc and that way you can get the updated aps on Windows 10 its a shame what intel did but..oh well Thanks RJ 👍

Thanks for the review. I still am a bit undecided between the Z64 Android and the X8-H Plus ... They both look mighty good machines ! I mainly use my android box for Live TV and VOD using XBMC as a platform ... as a matter of fact my current machine loads XBMC by default. I am mainly upgrading from my current box (a bluetimes quad core dongle) to get a better and more responsive experience. The z64 seems to give a better boot time (by how much not sure) and might give me future flexibility should I decide to flash it to windows ... however the X8-H Plus seems to have a better processor / GPU. Could anyone offer some advise ?

Glynn Drago Hi Glynn, my honest opinion is that if you dont need native 4K output the Z64 will be a better experience, everything is faster!! :) Both CPU´s and GPUs are at +- the same level in terms of real performance Intel or Am S812. Simon Benoit Hi, specially the capability of playing 4K native on the X8 H Plus and the Z64 only has 1080p. The Z64 is a bit faster loading apps because of faster storage and more storage 32GB instead of 16GB on the X8 H Plus. At the end of the day they are simple great machines either one or the other :)

Roberto could you use it as a dual boot, Android mainly TV box that could go into windows as a Computer, I am thinking ahead & to simplify for people like the Elderly, & my brother Challenged, so mostly a simple TV box, but with help or some instruction basically two boxes in one for half the price. The XBMC included can be beneficial to some users with poor connectivity but for any of us with a decent network access the best is the original KODI version. You have got it wrong regarding android being better for multimedia. The android boxes wont play netflix in hd, these will only play netflix in 480p. And there are issues with surround sound. Whereas the windows box can play netflix in ultra HD i.e. 4k by using microsoft edge. Even apple TV cant do that. Just because the android homescreen is structured towards multimedia I would rather a box that can actually play the media and not just have a pretty homescreen.

Hi Jason, in my opinion there is no Wrong and there is no Right. For me i still stand on every single word i stated. I prefer Android for my Multimedia consuption. I do respect and its easy to understand that you prefer windows but that is on your case :) and that is fine. If we like all of the same things there would be only 1 OS, but instead we have Android, Android TV OS, Windows, Linux (several :) ), Libreelec etc etc so many that each one of us will have to chose wich is the one the he prefers. cyberwolf29x Hi, unfortunately we still dont have Netflix here in Portugal (hopefully in October :)), so the best would be to ask in Minix forum as there are a lot of users there and some might be using Netflix. But if you need a box just for Netflix i would suggest the Nexus Player, although i dont like it that much it is one of the best for Netflix as far as comments that i receive from users. Raven Hi Raven, the best way to have a storage unit to be able to be seen by all devices included Android boxes is a NAS. You have some inexpensive units that you connect to your router and will be available to the all network. If you connect directly to a android machine then will be harder (root) to be seen by all other devices. RJ PS: Or you can use your old player just to be able to serve files to all your devices including the Minix.

Hey Bob, the X8-H Plus is now a old device from 2014, true that still beats some new machines but i would not advise getting one at this moment in time. what is the best one for netflix and kodi streaming on wifi 1080p

Orlando Zizumbo Hi Orlando. Unfortunately we dont have the possibility to use Netflix, so i cannot test it. Regarding 1080p any of these machines will play around with it. Now wifi i would suggest that you invest in a power line adaptor set that costs around 25€ and you will be able to stream anything without any buffering or freezes. The wifi connections are not very reliable when you play say a MKV file 1080 res. At least thats my experience with Android /Windows Boxes. Hope it helps. RJ
