This is powerful and beautiful. I have only recently become aware of Elizabeth Maconchy after reading about her in Anna Beer's book "Sounds and Sweet Airs: The Forgotten Women of Classical Music." I am now setting myself to listening to her music and enjoying it very much indeed. Some of her music reminds me much of the style of Michael Tippett, especially her Symphony for Double String Orchestra.

This is a fabulous piece. One of her best, I think, and very enjoyable to listen to. She makes fantastic use of the whole orchestra. I particularly love the brass - it's loud and exciting, but is scored so well that it doesn't overwhelm the soloist.
