Man I could talk about the intricacies of this game for hours so I'll do my best to keep from rambling too much ;) When you open your hero tab (H key) start by going to the equipment tab at the top. This is the best window to adjust your gear as it shows weapons, armor but also jewelry and underwater items. The wardrobe tab is where you do your transmog, altering the appearance of weapon and armor but not jewelry. As a new player your options for transmog will be limited at first because it requires a separate currency which is obtained primarily though completing maps. You can however freely alter the colors of your armor via the Dye tab. Sword/Sword and Sword/Pistol are great weapon loadouts to start with, good damage and they look really cool. For a secondary weapon, I would recommend greatsword which when used on a mesmer is actually a max range weapon. As you get farther in the game, you'll eventually start to see larger events with more players and having a long range weapon will be crucial for "tagging" event mobs so that you get credit for participating in the event as well as the loot that drops. In GW2, it doesn't matter who attacks a mob first, so long as you get 1 hit in, you get full credit for mob xp and loot when it dies.

oh! almost forgot, you can type /wiki in game and it will pull up a browser of the gw2 wiki which is a fantastic resource. It is kept in very good shape by the community and I recommend that as your first stop if you're stuck on something or have an in-game question

You play what you want, but greatsword is a great mesmer weapon. Surprisingly, it is a range weapon ! (it's in the mesmer "vibe", a weapon doing something else than it looks like)

Sword and pistol looks so cool, and surprisingly effective for a change.!! You may need to get more/bigger bags soon if you want to craft stuff.?

sound effect volume is a bit higher than usual. this could annoy some people over time.
