Lip primers are also usually really good for stopping bullet lipstick from feathering. Especially if you have lips with a ton of lines. It can make a huge difference. As well as lip liners. It drives me crazy sometimes especially with standard lipsticks that people don’t line their lips. Honestly I only used lip liners for most of my life as my lipstick because I really hated having to worry about reapplying lip color in high school lol

I've been using that exact Elf oil under my eyes before concealer for a while now and MAN what a difference it's made in my 45 year old aging dry skin. Then I'll use a brush to blend the concealer and then tap over it with a sponge that I spray with the Elf Glow Dewy Mist. That combo is just magic! That spray is really good just by itself too. Like a canvas, if the base isn’t properly prepped or absorbed, the “paint” (aka makeup) won’t last or glide on smoothly.
@kathleenem92073 жыл бұрын
It’s the same if you are painting a room-90 percent prep. Of course, it’s good if the painter knows what he/ she’s doing. Chances are anyone who puts a lot of effort into prepping and priming knows what they’re doing.

It took me a little bit to grasp this for painting, tbh. Gesso?? What what?? Haha.

My favorite hack for my SUPER OILY eyelids is double-priming. In order to get my eyeshadow to stay all day - I'm talking like 15/16 hours or more, I use a thin layer of Urban Decay Anti-Aging Priner Potion followed by a thin layer of Gerard Cosmetics Clean Slate (or, MAC Paint Pot until it's all used up). Has been life-changing for me!

Another very good primer for uneven oily skin is the Laura Mercier blurring primer. It smooths the texture without making it doll-like, and controls oils pretty well without dehydrating the skin. Some other hacks I use for oily skin: 1) Powder before and after the foundation. The powder underneath works like a shield. It will absorb the oil before it reaches the foundation. 2) Use different powders on your face. I use lightweight, light reflecting powders under my eyes and above my lips, rice powder on my oiliest areas (this is often my under the foundation powder, as it is white and visible) and my all-round favourite powder all over (usually Laura transluicent or Nikkia Joy). Adjust your powders to the needs of your skin. 3) Treat sun protection as skin prep. Get a rich, creamy sunblock if your skin is dry, or a leightweight one if you're oily. My oily skin likes Canmake Mermaid, Etude House Sunprise Airy Finish and LRP Anthelios XL sunscreens. Skip moisturiser in the morning, instead use hydrating mist or toner and an eye cream (i.e. any cream under the eyes) and sunscreen all over. 4) If you do your makeup some time after you put on your skin care, use a blotting paper before starting your makeup. This way the oils that are already out won't contribute to shortened longevity of your makeup. 5) Do not overkill your sebum. If you put setting spray underneath, mattifyning primer, rice powder, foundation, powder and setting spray again, you risk getting the adverse effect: surface dehydration and tons of sebum that tries to counteract this dryness. It is neither pleasant nor looks good. Better use less and blot twice or thrice during the day than put too much at the beginning. 6) Control your oils with long-term skincare rather than makeup. Use clay and algae masks, incorporate niacinamide, BHA and retinol in your routine, hydrate (water creams for the win!). Keep the oils balanced.

Love love LOVE your videos and the level of knowledge you share. TYSM 🖤 The reason why a gel cream works IMO is because it replenishes your skin with hydration that we lose as a result of a natural process called - TEWL (or Trans Epidermal Water Loss) which is happening at the dermis layer of your skin. In some parts of your face, the skin barrier is strong so it can hold onto the hydration better so you're not not flaking/ generating too much oil absolutely everywhere. Now this loss of hydration can result in either dry patch/ flakiness (for my dry skin beauties as their skin pores are tiny and cannot generate as much natural oil) OR in too much oil coming through to the skin surface (for my oily skin beauties as they have large pores and skin is trying to nourish itself by producing more oil to replace water loss) BUT both are caused by the same issue - lack of hydration. Gel based creams are water-based (i.e. first ingredient is water in them) so the skin absorbs it quickly, replenishes itself and it prevents flaking/ too much oil generation. So your skin is nourished and make-up stays longer. 🥰 I should mention that I'm no skin expert. This info is just based on my own research, watching a lot of skincare videos (Hi James! 😉) and listening to the dermatologist on YT. Much love xx

You are, literally, the smartest & most helpful makeup artists I've ever stumbled across. I have NEVER been able to get my makeup to work because my skin is so damn oily. I can't even believe it. You are amazing. I finally understand what I've been doing wrong & more importantly HOW it's wrong--because I never really knew why my makeup was doing what it was doing; caking, creasing, smudging, breaking down... it's been a fucking nightmare. I stopped wearing makeup for YEARS because I thought it would just never work for me--like my skin was incompatible no matter the brand or ingredients. I even took notes, just to make sure I don't screw up & waste an hour. I need to get faster at this...

Thank you so much, Robert! I've been watching the channel for a while and honestly my makeup has improved so SO much since I transitioned away from watching Beauty Gurus and towards watching tips from professionals such as yourself. It has helped me love my makeup and the way my skin looks more and just overall improves the process for me. That setting spray under foundation trick is so GENIUS! And also taking the extra steps to prep my skin with skin care before going in with my makeup has somehow improved the overall look as well as the feel while I'm wearing the makeup and also lessened how much I break out when I do decide to wear a full face. Love you so much!!

Targeted priming is a great tip! Using a smoothing primer just where you have texture, pressing in a hydrating primer just where you have dehydrated areas, etc. is really helpful. Also I tried the light layer of oil under my eyes and my concealer looks way smoother!

The laniege glowy makeup serum has been a game changer for my dry skin Foundations that I couldn't wear are now my favorite when I use this. I even like it by itself on no makeup makeup days.i was never a big primer person till I found this, because it works so well on my skin. It doesn't make everything dewy either, it keeps matte formulas matte but it stops my skin from looking dry and patchy in areas where it normally would.
