As a fellow professional makeup artist, the amount of muas who have the nerve to charge money but can’t work on deeper skintones is immeasurable. Stop turning your dark skinned clients gray!! Please!!!! Learn to be inclusive or stop calling yourself a professional. BIPOC aren’t an afterthought.

Absolutely agree. I’m also a fellow Pro MUA & I feel that if you’re going to charge money and call yourself a Pro MUA, you need to cater to all skin tones. Period. I keep cream black, red, yellow, white, etc. in my kit so that I can make custom colors to match anyone & everyone. And I also agree on making people grey. If you don’t have a shade to match the client, DONT DO IT THEN. I’d say most people who get their makeup professionally done, end up taking photos and posting them online. I’m always like “would I be okay with this look being posted on their social media?”. This is what these artists should be thinking when they are turning their client grey.

In my opinion (as a Brit), popular UK makeup today is an evolution of the early 2000s makeup (darkest dream matte mousee foundation you can find, don't blend at the neck, lightest foundation on the lip with a brown lip pencil and a smokey or frosted eye), if the make up looks like a modern/more technical version of this then its probably a British MUA!

Ooohhh.. white girls were doing it in the early 90’s too… we wanted to be just like our beautiful deeper darker skinned sisters and lining our lips like this was one way of doing it. Looked so much better on them, gorgeous… on us??? Not so much. I have yearbook photos… I was a little more skater so I didn’t wear much lipstick other deep burgundy (grunge look), but my friends all sported the lined lips.

It’s really not about who it was made for in this case because it would look like the same hideous “steak lips” on darker skinned women if they had such an obvious separation between the two shades. I don’t know why blending isn’t common sense to some.

Just before my wedding, I went for a consult at a "fancy" salon in my town and they did a trial run of my wedding day makeup. No sooner did I leave and get in my car and looked in my mirror that the makeup was cakey, already melting off my face, etc. It looked AWFUL. I decided to do my own makeup because I trusted my own skills for my wedding day and I got more compliments on it AND it stayed on all day. Ever since, I've always told my women friends that if they are confident in their own skills and don't mind doing it themselves, then do your own wedding makeup. Unless you completely trust the artist, only YOU know what you really want for your wedding day. Trust your skills because chances are that someone you barely know isn't going to do it the way that you like it or want it done. Again, unless you totally trust that artist.

Amen!! I did my own makeup (with my sister’s help) for my wedding and regret nothing. My makeup tastes are very different from what’s trendy these days, so there was no way I was going to have some rando try and interpret what I like on my face. Much easier to do it myself! Plus I didn’t have to pay anyone, haha.

@@agentcallisto Yup! I know some women would rather not put the pressure on themselves, and I totally get that. But I am SO glad I went for that consult/trial run a couple weeks before because had I not, I would have been so disappointed on my wedding day. I mean, that looked so awful. Even the lipstick was melting after a few minutes and I had globs of it in the corners of my mouth. So, I did my own and loved how it turned out. We didn't have setting spray back then, but if I had an occasion (like that!) that I needed it to stay on, of course I would wear my most long wearing products and then I would lightly set it with hairspray. Worked great and the makeup stayed in place for hours!
