I feel like Lime Crime was too expensive for the teen goths/emos/alts but too bold for the people who had the money for it… a lot of kids wanted it and saved up, but when it didn’t perform well, or they found cheaper things that held the colours they wanted… it kinda shrivelled up. If it had been scrupulously ethical, and the formulas were good, then it could have stayed around longer, as it could be a luxury item, that had social status, ethical support and a decent quality…. But I think it really failed to be great formulation, and ethically obviously has some alleged issues! Many of my alternative friends still prefer brights, pastels or lashing of black pigment, but they want something that suits their personal morals… many are vegan or at least prefer no testing on animals, and almost all of them are disabled/LGBTQIA+/non-British heritage, or are close to people who are, and I don’t have any friends who are comfortable with bigotry or hatred of any kind. So it makes no sense to market to them with the stuff LC had behind scenes!

As a person who is quite familiar with Doe's deeds and the company's history, I will say that Limecrime was still very well off when Doe left. Limecrime actually rebranded several times. First, Xenia/Doe was selling fashion (and coattailing shrinkle), then came the cosmetics with the whole rainbow-ey unicorn aesthetic in the (goooorgeous) purple packaging, including the scandalous repackaged micas marketed as pigments (2008), followed by the lipsticks (2010 onwards) and a few palettes. Back then, EVERYONE knew she was rude and scammy. My favourite scandal of her btw is her selling a dress, its seams she duct taped instead of sewing and then calling the buyer an a**ehole. Also her documenting poisoning her cat by feeding her grapes in her blog, being called out for it and then lying about it after the poor fella died. Then came the Velvetines, particularly Cashmere, hit a massive nerve and the company changed its direction towards a more grungey-boho vibe, also see Venus palette. Way back when during the scandals the internet was a very different place and people wouldn't be held accountable to the same extent as they are now. The major downfall imho was Xenia leaving- her new brand is doing fine, better than LC, showing that people still don't care.

I’ve never heard that and I was around for the drama years ago. There are photos floating around of her in two different cosmetic labs and you can see their names in the background or in paperwork. I don’t remember the name of the second one but they were manufacturing two other small indie brands (one was called K’oir or something like that) aside from hers. She repackaged a lot of stuff (primarily micas) or worked with private labeling companies but I don’t think she ever repackaged Wet N Wild. That would’ve probably been more expensive than just going with a private label because she’d have to change the tube and still buy her own unicartons.
@glitter_bombed Жыл бұрын
it wasn't repackaged wet n wild, she used a private label. the loose eyeshadows were straight pigments from tkb trading, too, i still have my old pot of 'dragon scales' floating around somewhere. so disappointing, and i never would've bought from them (this would've been early 2010 btw) if i had known any of the history. there was a lot, even back then, i was horrified when i learned. something the video didn't touch on was that doe deere used to be friends with amy doan, who founded sugarpill cosmetics. and doe's early days of selling clothes that she "made" on ebay was just her buying, like, used clothes and altering them slightly. there was an old video of a blogger/youtuber talking about a dress her mother had given her from doe that had been hemmed with duct tape, and when they asked her about it, she called the woman's mother an asshole. she also sold "designer" sunglasses that were child-sized party favors from aliexpress and all kinds of junk. honestly you probably could make a 3-hour video about all the shady stuff doe deere has been involved in. she currently sells jewelry, clothes, handbags, and... porcelain teacups, of all things, through her new brand poppy angeloff, which i found out randomly cos their instagram page was recommended to me lol

To me Lime Crime ended in the same cursed trinity with KVD and JS. I have also yet to see a makeup rebrand/change of ownership that actually works. Lime Crime is a prime example of this with KVD. The aesthetic of both brands transpired of their founder's identity, and that was also what made them special back then. Their creative mindset was at the origin of their success (LC with their underground unicorn aspect and KVD with the tattoo aesthetic and the art of Kat itself). I think the identity is what is so hard to manage in a rebranding like this, when you want to get rid of the toxic aura of the previous founder. How to keep a brand aesthetic without loosing the customer interest because it reminds them of all the sh*t the previous founder said and did? What a challenge imo! I think ultimately the golden era of all these brands are definitely past them, and there is no way they can get back to the success they had. They are in a way, sentenced to perdition. Little note: I mentioned JS because he is also extremely controversial and this is dooming his brand imo, and also because his brand transpires of his aesthetic and creative mind as well as for LC and KVD back in the days. That being said, he is still at the head of his brand though, and he didn't step out of it, so that places the brand in a slightly different category since it didn't have to go through a rebrand (yet).
@potat19 Жыл бұрын
The thing is, all the three of those brands keep selling lots of products, still. I think the downfall of LC and KVD was a creative one, instead of a typical economic downfall that we tend to think of: LC rebranded after Doe left and changed the entire grungy-alt aesthetic for a mainstream, clean one and essentially drove off the previous customers who kept buying from the brand for the quality and aesthetics, same thing happened with KVD. JS, on the other hand, went through a whole cancellation and his brand stopped being mentioned on KZbin or TikTok, but his products keep their fame on platforms such as IG or Facebook. I’ve also seen how Lime Crime and JS Cosmetics sell like hot bread in non English speaking countries, maybe because the general population don’t know about the history behind these brands or simply because they don’t care. I believe that, at the end of the day, brands like KVD and LC will fall definitively if they keep trying to mimic the mainstream brand image, trying to compete with trustful, recognized and well established brands in that field, with better prices than what those two offer.
@saturnas Жыл бұрын
@@potat19if anything is gonna impact the fame and the sells of JS products, it's the decay in quality. Since Pink Religion I'm seeing lots of reviews about how the eyeshadows are staining the skin even after being removed. There’s a video where a brazilian beauty blogger ends up stained for like, days after using pink religion lol I'm too broke to buy anything JS but I'd never risk my money with such staining cosmetics. I can get cheaper things with actual good quality.
@raerohan4241 Жыл бұрын
@@saturnas I'm not fond of of JS so don't think this is in defence of him: to get extreme colour payoff, many brands will sell something called a pressed pigment instead of an eyeshadow. For eyeshadow palettes nowadays, if they include highly saturated, highly pigmented shades, the chances are high that they are pressed pigments. The problem with pressed pigments is that they have a tendency to stain. This is especially true of reds, pinks, and purples. The issue of staining isn't therefore an issue of quality, but is instead a side effect of the demand for highly pigmented products

I have all of their permanent palettes, a huge box full of their velveteens, plushies, wet cherry glosses, lip blazes, lip pops and even their blushes and single eyeshadows and glitters. Quality wise their products are more good than bad. Some of the velveteens are a little on the dryer side, but not to a degree worse than any other low/middle high end brand. I also feel like they came back a little with their fairy collection and the prelude palettes, but by then the damage was already too much. When I look at my collection and remember how happy their colourful stuff made me, it's kind of sad to know what was going on. But at the same time, I'm happy to see people who participate in any kind of discrimination held accountable. Good video, Robert! I was hoping you would talk about this at some point.

I can remember the first rendition of Doe’s first website when she was just selling her glitter pots and plugging her clothes! I was always so enamored by the boldness. The newness of the internet! So surreal that this is how her career played out. I so admired her in the early 2000s as a teen - she was fierce, bold, and had a style I hadn’t seen before - something I think I needed to see as a girl growing up in suburban Missouri ❤

First of all sir, may I admire that gorgeous eyemakeup? Absolutely GORG 🖤🖤🖤 2:50 - that effin word is hard to say in Swedish too and for some reason I associate it with the dentists and their website when they want to give a clean, minimalistic kind of vibe 🦷🤭 God I remember when they blew up and I wanted any product from them so bad, and just like you- not for use, just look at it and smell it 😁😁😁 The lavender lipstick was the dream object but I felt it was to pricey so I never purchased from them. In 5 years, I think the brand will have disappeared if the new owners doesn’t take a 180 turn, all from packaging, colour stories to their products and smart PR. But it feels like KimChi Chic beauty have taken their place. Now I’m a firm believer that there’s room for everyone so I’ll check in how it’s going for Lime Crime 😃 Thank you for a really good catch up video, hope to see more of those in the future and also praying to Dark Winter the Unicorn to make space, time and energy for a mystery makeup video 😊 I really really miss them and meanwhile I rewatch the old ones 🦇🦇🦇

I’ll never forget coming into the makeup scene when Lime Crime was becoming a huge deal and doe Deere was an absolute psychopath who was going after people cut throat for simply criticising the sub par products. I honestly cannot believe people bought their stuff for so long.

as someone who’s alt/punk (idk labels are weird but some amalgamation of punk and goth) all the brands who go for my demographic just wind up being so horrible from a CEO/controversies standpoint like i think most alt/punk/goth/etc ppl care probably more about a brand’s ethics, the ceo’s politics, and the like. so it’s so wild to me that it’s always those companies that absolutely tank their reputations by being shitty

The formula was awful and the pigment was none existent. And I never went there again after that. 😢

I remember when their cashmere velvetine was like the most coveted lip color in about 2013-14. Despite their issues, I think they were largely responsible for the matte liquid lipstick trend back then. At least, I think they laid the groundwork for their popularisation through Jeffree star cosmetics etc

Not only cause it’d be your brand and I trust you to actually do the work to make/work with a brand to make something ethical and productive, but cause your aesthetic is something I aspire for, but you’re more elegant (I’m a grunge punk guy, wears mostly black with splashes of color, spikes with the unicorns. @@RobertWelsh yeah I think it was in like 2015 or 2016? They had those superfoil eyeshadow duos and they ended up molding and the pans got rusty because of formula problems, but the brand played the mold spots off as "water and pigment bubbles" that may come up because there's water in the formula.

Back in 2012 I got into nail polish and pigments, and maybe 2013 Lime Crime had a set of 6 rainbow pastel nail polishes that I bought for myself and my niece. Around the same time, people started claiming that they were selling "white label" pigments from KB Trading at a huge markup. Also, Doe Deere would get into it with customers and they had bad press back then. I loved the polish, but never purchased from them again. Her name is still coming up to this day as problematic, but I hadn't even known about her palettes, etc. Never would buy from them again.

I don't know if you know, but Xenia Vorotova (Doe Deere), was constantly copying Amy Doan from Sugarpill in alt fashion circles and on Livejournal. One of my first popular blog posts was about Lime Crime selling repackaged TKB pigments, which was directly in conflict with how she claimed to make everything herself. I didn't try Lime Crime until after Doe Deere stepped away from the company. I like some of their Venus palettes. Their plushies and plushie glows, as well as their new bullet lipsticks are excellent formulas. I'm not a fan of their original liquid lipstick formula, it's one of the types that causes my lips to peel off. Their diamond dew liquid eyeshadows were really fun and in unique colors, but super chunky. You're spot on about Doe's energy, lol, paid blue checkmark indeed! I've tried their color-depositing hair conditioners, which were nice. I haven't tried their hair dye on my hair, but I helped a friend color her hair with it and she did not get good results (Arctic Fox did not do well for her hair either). To me, Lime Crime has lost any edge they used to have, and they seem almost directionless. I think that's part of why people aren't interested in them.
