You can easily make your own wood cutting board from a length of unfinished wood, such as oak. A single thick board can be cut to size and then oiled. Done! That's how my cutting board was made by my father - it's about 75 years old and is going strong.

Watching Rob while decluttering. His simple living motivates me so much. I sometimes get so fustrated with all the belongings I have and even when I give stuff away and declutter I still have so much.I guess I should show gratitude and just keep on my decluttering process. It takes time. Thanks for the motivation Rob!!Athena says hi!!!

All well said man. Life is all about "choices". My 86 y/o father simply cannot comprehend how I can be "happy" while sharing 400 sqr ft with a 100 lb service dog and a 900 lb motorcycle. Now, I DO "own" this 4 acres with no 'mortgage'. But myself, gardens, and animals only utilize 10% of it. I rent/barter the other 90% to sustain the 'lifestyle' I'VE chosen. "FREEDOM" AIN'T CHEAP. We ALL pay for it in time and/or "security". JMHO.~Eli

Hello Rob, You are amazing. Such an inspiration to live more in harmony with Mother Earth. Now I feel like a king having a 455 sq ft prefab "house" on a 2.5 acre orchard, apricating running water even more than before. I got rid of my fridge than recently my neighbor gave me his, but I don't like it, so I'm not using it. It makes a lot of noise and generates too much heat.... Long story short: We love you :) Keep rocking the boat....

Thanks,Rob, for the inspiration. My husband and I, plus our oldest granddaughter, all live this way in Maine during the summer. I've been searching for a place in southwest Fl where we could do the same. There's so many rules and codes. I guess that people who are living in their McMansion don't want to have to look out and see folks who are free from the treadmill. It's not an easy way to live, because being responsible for every facet of your life is intense. I think your projects are having a great impact on the prevailing attitude about how we live.

Thank you so much! I life tiny and off grid together with my wife 3 years now. This experience is amazing. But as you said there are challanges. We don't do it extreme like you and we buy most of the food. But also harvesting wild plants and stuff. This video reinforced my purpose (hope I say this right). Especially what you said about time. That hepled me a lot in this moment. Present time should not be the touchstone. Progress is all that counts! Thank you so much for all your videos and inspiration.

Of all that you listed, I really hope the law becomes more flexible. I understand people don’t want huge communities of residential lots being dedicated to tiny homes for various reasons, but I believe there’s a middle ground that can be achieved.

I hate being too hot and I love snow. I’m not young and fit either, but I like the spirit here. This is the life of a medieval peasant, constant hard work and no time for leisure. I want to read and reflect on the meaningless of life. Oh, and to live reliably like this takes more people, a village in fact. And how do you defend yourself outside society? Lots of questions. But again, well done.

Love you too Rob Greenfield. Your videos inspire me to believe that 'closing the loop' really is possible. The principles you have adopted could be applied at any scale, and keeping it small has made it possible to employ loads of ideas so that people can use some, or just a few. Here in Tasmania our housing crisis is worsening. More and more, people are opting for simplistic life styles, but there are often tiny houses for sale that didn't quite meet up to the 'idealistic' lifestyle. I think having more than one person living in this situation could definitely be another challenge that would need to be considered. All the best.

I think after this project you should start a workshop or build a type of commune to help teach others how to live sustainably. Those are bigger thoughts, but at some point maybe you can help teach others how you do it in person so they can learn by doing and have it become a real life skill/habit for themselves. Teaching in groups or creating a community that wants to live sustainably together might be the next step. Your work is so inspiring and essential and i want to see it progress on a larger scale! This is clearly your purpose!

Hi Rob, thanks for sharing the challenges of living in a small space. My partner built his own self-sufficient motorhome and we both lived in it for 2 years, it measured 13 x 5 ft (75 sq. ft) and it certainly was a challenge. It included a shower/toilet, sink, stove, double bed, fridge/freezer, and storage space. Everything we owned fit into that motorhome and we were self-sufficient in power (solar power/12volt), had a gas hot water system, and collected water in our large under-floor tanks from municipal taps. Our floor space was tiny - about the size of a small mat - and with 2 of us living there we had to be super patient with each other because only one person would be able to move around at any one time. What I found the most difficult apart from the dirt on the floor (which would get in our bed) and the heat in summer (100-110F) was the constant moving around of things just to be able to reach or use something else. Something was always underneath or behind something else and it would drive me crazy. Now, living in a small 2 bedroom house seems like luxury, there is so much space. Thanks for showing us all that it isn't always easy living "simply" and best of luck with whatever the future holds in store for you x. Diane

Hi Rob. You are an inspiration to me. It occurred to me after hearing your points about sustainable living is that it ultimately must be translated to a community based way of life. That is the only way it could conceivably be "sustainable". The whole structure must be redone to the way we use resources as a society. So I guess I'm asking if you ever envision yourself forming a community based on sustainable practices? I would be right on board with that.

Hola Rob. Es un gusto saludarte. Me encantó tu video.

Awesome. I don't know if you've ever been to the Philippines, but your style of life reminds me a lot of the Philippines. I've been living here for a year and a half. We have outside kitchens, bathrooms, etc. I love where I live. It is a little challenging as a foreigner to live the way I would choose.. which would be like a native.. more like you live there in Florida. As a foreigner, the better scenario for me here is renting a two room basement apartment underneath a modern house. There is no AC, but being a basement apartment it doesn't get super hot. A fan would be nice some really hot days, but otherwise it's fine. The cost is $40 a month which includes the electricity. It is a lot to pay in my area, but being a foreigner, I get charged more whenever possible- which is something I have come to accept- although I do my best to get the best (foreigner) price possible. I was paying $100 a month (for a small cottage) prior to relocating to this cheaper. bigger space. I cook inside, but there is the option of cooking in the outdoor kitchen. I simply prefer the speed and convenience of using my electric cook stove. I am usually only using it to boil noodles or rice. Otherwise, I am not a cook. Like you, I'm a minimalist- not out of discipline or anything.. I simply don't like clutter, etc. I don't have a TV.. as I use the Internet instead. I don't have a car, cuz I prefer taking the (.40 cent) bus whenever I gotta go to the city. It makes no sense for me to have a car or a motorcycle here, but if I was filthy rich, I might consider it. I lived in NYC prior to moving here. While there, I would often search Google for the cheapest places to live. I think the cheapest I found was about $500 a month to live in Vietnam. So, when I moved to the Philippines, I expected to be paying more than that. But I never have. My cost of living here- with everything included- is about $200 a month. That includes visa extensions, Internet, food, rent, transportation, eating out occasionally, snacks, etc., One of the cool things here, too, is that my area of the Philippines does not have running water. So the entire neighborhood goes to a natural spring to bathe and wash their laundry, as well as get water. I do likewise, but also wash my dishes and dog there. I work remotely, which is a good gig for me and is helping me get ahead financially. I work online teaching English to Chinese students. My next venture is to start a KZbin Channel focusing on public speaking and Advanced ESL.. as they are very much related. Gio (P.S. If you were going to be living there long term, I would suggest adding more shed-like structures for whatever you want or need- like a guest room, living room, office, etc. If I ever decide to build here in the Philippines, that is what I will do.. small shed-like separate buildings for different things. I would like that better than a big house and it is also easier/cheaper to build. )

Living in central Florida all my life I'm amazed to see you living without AC, or at least a fan!! I love this project. You said you create minimal waste, what waste do you create that you are not able to repurpose?

This is such a cool place and dude. Things would be much easier if there was a bit of community going on - in the old days when they were living like this they did have extended family and whole villages sharing the load eg. food growing
