Robin and the 7 Hoods (1964) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #Robinandthe7Hoods
It's The Rat Pack with a very special VIP "plus one" in this sly Runyonesque musical revision of the Robin Hood legend, done up Chicago gangland style. Frank Sinatra stars as Robbo, caught up in a gang war with rival mobster Guy Gisborne (Peter Falk) after mob chieftain Big Jim (Edward G. Robinson, in an uncredited cameo) get the big rub-out. With allies Will (Sammy Davis, Jr,) and John (Dean Martin) at his side, Robbo gets suborned by Big Jim's daughter Marian (Barbara Rush) to ice the man that iced her dad to the tune of 50 Gs.
Directed By Gordon Douglas
Starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr.

Okay, I'll admit it was "Family Guy" that introduced me to this fabulous song. And what's wrong with that? The wonderful music is one of the things that made the show so endearing-at least for the first few seasons. If "Family Guy" could take a bunch of obscure but wonderful songs, like this one, and reintroduce them to a new audience, thus sparking an interest in seeing the original source material, then I say that "Family Guy" must have been doing something right!

Perhaps. I just happen to know the source material for a number of the songs used in the show and because I realize that not all the songs are originally written for the show it makes me curious about the ones that aren't, such as this one. I personally cannot fault Walter Murphy for his arrangements and musical selections because he already won me over years ago back in the ancient disco '70's with "A Fifth Of Beethoven", a discofied version of the first movement of Beethoven's 5th Symphony that became a huge disco hit!

At 2.43 Dean is really grinning at Sammy's 'testimony', then @ 3.46 he does his 'staring in fascination' bit when Bing finishes his speech, until Frank bashes him on the shoulder (Rat Pack fans may remember that they often did this when they appeared together onstage) And again @ 4.07 Frank has a hard time trying not to laugh at Deans obvious add-libbing! I get the distinct impression that this was far from the first 'take' of this scene, and Dean just wanted to get out of there and onto the nearest golf course!!🏌⛳️

Fun Fact: Bing was an Olympic-level pot smoker when he was young. Bing hung out with Jazz musicians then, and the thing they like next to music is, well you know. He was smoking so much weed, that his buddy Louis Armstrong told him that he needed to dial it back a bit. When a Jazz musician thinks you're smokin' too much pot, you is really smokin' too much pot. That's like Willie or Snoop telling you that you're smoking too much.

Funny that Sinatra produced that picture but in this scene he stood back and let the spotlight shine on his co-stars !!! When Dean momentarily remains silent before testifying at 3:48 is part of a running joke in the movie. Some of the members of the gang insist that Bing's character eloquently delivering his elaborate lines is due to the fact that he has something in his throat, but it is simply because they don't understand a word of what he is saying. Love the way Sammy says that line at 4:13 !!!
