Really and Sincerely was written after the train crash. It is obvious Robin was deeply traumatized by what he saw. Every “live” performance by Robin or the Beegees is special. I have a huge collection of live performances including ones taped by fans. The tape from Festival Hall that you showed a piece from is fabulous. I could listen to Robin all day long. Please continue to showcase his voice which is truly a gift from God which he shared with us.

Really and Sincerely was written as Robin's musical response to the Hither Green rail crash. Robin and future wife Molly were passengers on the train riding in first class when it derailed. He and Molly had minor injuries and Robin helped pull injured passengers out of the wreckage until more help arrived. He credited the success of "Massachusetts" for giving him enough money to afford first class passage on the train. Many of the 49 killed and 78 injured were in the rail cars that overturned at the back of the train. The train crash traumatized Robin and he had nightmares about it for the rest of his life.

A few people died later of their injuries too and many had amputations to free them.

He said he didn't realize his own strength, pulling others out of the cars by himself. The voice of the teenaged boy begging for help ("please don't let me die ") that went silent and he knew he couldn't help really affected him and was a large part of the lyrics here.

Today, Robin would be surely diagnosed with post traumatic stress syndrome. It was a diagnosis that didn’t exist in 1967. He was 17 and in a whirlwind that took him from global pop star to disaster survivor in the span of weeks.

Although he was supposed to rest in bed the day after the crash he said he had to write to express his emotions and divert his mind from what happened. The song reflected his devastated mood. When in his 50's he told an interviewer how he still had nightmares. As Juanita said, he pulled out both dead and living victims and comforted people having on the spot amputations to free them but one young man about his own age keep crying out "Don't let me die" and he couldn't reach him. The voice eventually faded. The words "Really and Sincerely I tried" tell the story. He played that accordion on the original recording. He bought it in Paris and learned to play it. I would have preferred the live version to have remained a solo. His voice was drowned out at the end. He was 17 when he wrote this.

Thank you for this song Chad, I remember it was one of the first I asked for when I began following your channel 😊 As you noticed it's melancholic to the extreme, the reason, that was the very first song Robin wrote after the train crash and if I'm not wrong it was about a young boy he tried to save, the boy told him not to leave him alone, sadly Rob could not do more 😪

It was nice to see Robin with some of his instruments and to hear him playing one. I am sad that he so often is forgotten for being an actual musician and only mentioned as a singer. In the 60's he did play live, keyboard, minature piano, guitar and keytar are ones I remember but I was a kid. He never played again after they got back together after the split, perhaps on Sgt Pepper, ' Oh Darling'. He said himself, 'the instruments were for songwriting', then.

Here, we can hear and see the essence of Robin Gibb and not only his vocal-abilities, no, his inner soul too. To me, more than on other, much more knewn songs. It's a phantastic track. Chad, thanxalot but I have another request. Some month's ago, you reacted to 'With The Sun In My Eyes', out of the same album. You doublefeatured it with the same tune out of Barry's award winning album 'Greenfields' in 2020. He also sang it on his Mythology-Tour in 2013/2014. So please make another double-feature. Take 'Really And Sincerely' out of the reprise-record disc 2, here more guitar-based and then go to Barry, singing 'With The Sun In My Eyes', live. Why? Two brothers, same brilliance and genius.

I think the emotional train derailment had a huge effect on Robin, he sounds so very dramatic here. He talked about how it bothered him to see all the trauma and death he went thru with Molly, I don't think they were married at the time. I don't care a lot about this song although his voice was good.

@@kthor Well, I'm not sure what adolescent comment you are referring to as you have deleted your original response to which I agreed with your assertion that bad production issues might have made the back-up vocals sound so jarring. My point, which is a reasonable one, is that Robin's very delicate vocal throughout this song did not need backup for the last line. If you are going to spend your time bitching about my various posts you have a long and boring day ahead of you because I stick my adolescent nose into a lot of conversations, always with comments about how awesome Robin was and they will annoy you, each and every one.

I have not encountered "many" who noted that he should not have sung certain backing vocals but if you feel that way then that's your prerogative of course. I have noted many people say over the years that he should have sung more leads.

Regardless, as I said, this song was written as a cathartic about a horrible incident Robin and his future wife experienced and should have been left as a tribute to that since he suffered PTSD for his life thereafter. The song as originally recorded was as a solo vocal. It should have been left as such if only for that reason.

Robin recounted that he had escaped death four times in four events, including the 1967 Hithergreen train crash (Robin wrote "Really And Sincerely" after that crash). So nothing bad. Going through a train wreck and pulling out dead bodies tends to be a melancholic event. It was his mood the day after the wreck that he wrote this.
