To be honest, I believe Barry abused his brothers, especially Robin (because he knew Robin was a better singer), and it was probably a pleasure for Robin to perform alone. He was certainly well received. I loved that kid, even more since he's passed.

@@leahelam6073 I'm glad Robin called it Quits when he did. Way Too much favoritism was being shown towards Barry with their manager and their Dad. Robin Had to make a drastic stand to assert himself at ALL at that point! That said, I am very thankful that they soon reunited. It had to be a rough time all way round for the Brothers. But of course Robin, being the one to walk away, was the one who caught the worst brunt of it. He was blamed and attacked from ALL sides. I don't blame Barry as much as I do their manager and their father, Hugh Gibb. And It was good to see that Robin had the support of his twin,Mo! And just my 2 cents, but I don't think that Mo was surprised nor offended by Robins decision to leave. Not a bit. Barry, on the other hand, claims that he was totally surprised and hurt. That he had No idea until he went to the studio to record and it was just him and the sound engineer there. That Robin and Mo did not show up, and that That's how he found out!? Hmmm? Yeah, right, Barry! (Eye-Roll!)🙄

This was a rough time for Robin. He had guts. I've always given him credit for standing up for himself and walking away from the Bee Gees. He held his ground through all the crap written about him in the press, Stigwood suing him, while his father trying to make him a ward of the court. He didn't run off the stage when someone threw something at his head. Robin had said they threw a smorgasbord at him. Lol. But I must say, Robin was wasted for this show.
@darrinmitchell2818 жыл бұрын
absolutely right. there must have been a lot going on for him in that era.
@gloriamaryhaywood22178 жыл бұрын
@kitty larue Do you happen to know WHY these people were throwing things at Robin?..Did Robin ever mention wth was up with that?! I've only recently become a dedicated fan of this fabulous band.. and Robin in particular has intrigued and captivated me for some reason. Was it just that this was a very young and immature..not to mention pretty wasted (if judging by that dude dancing! lol) crowd? Or did they have something against Robin himself..maybe because he left the band? Because I noticed that when the brothers united again, they performed in New Zealand in 1970. Thought you might know..I appreciate any info you might have.
@kl36208 жыл бұрын
@Gloria. Robin said the crowd was restless. They had been waiting for a bit and I believe it was quite warm. This has been years ago that I heard Rob say this so my mind may be a little fuzzy. He said he understood. I think he said something to the effect that he performs even when his audience hurts him. Again, it's been a while. I don't know if the audience had anything against Rob per say, however, it's no secret many fans took sides in the Gibb fight, still do. But they were there to see Robin so they must have been fans. All of the brothers have said the Australian audience could be a tough crowd to please... sort of a benchmark. But this is New Zealand, so I digress. This is not the first time Robin had something thrown at him. I believe he had an egg hurled at him in England not too long after they returned to the UK, to which he continued performing while the egg ran down his face. I think Robin traveled specifically for this show without performing other venues along the way, which is odd. Long way to travel just for one show, well, I think he had two shows in New Zealand. You mention the "dude" dancing may have been wasted, well I truly believe, so was Robin. This was during a time when Robin like his chemistry set a little too much. Better living through pharmaceuticals may have been Robin's motto. You're getting a late start to the brothers, but better late than never. I envy the fact that you are seeing (KZbin), hearing, and learning about this special band of brothers for the first time. They've made beautiful music, both apart and of course together. As for Robin intriguing you, well, Robin was definitely different. He was an interesting and very complicated person, full of contradiction. As Barry had said, he never fully understood Robin, while Mo said that being Robin's twin made him understand Robin that much more easily. I'm glad Rob had his twin to understand him, but when Mo was taken away, Robin was lost, his supportive family, notwithstanding. His voice and early music are one of a kind. Keep looking for the gems, there are many.
@darrinmitchell2818 жыл бұрын
+Gloria Mary Haywood Just to clarify - it was only one thing thrown at him - a tomato. Robin was interviewed the next day and said he totally understood, and realised it was late, they had been waiting and waiting to see him. Just general hysteria I think. The Bee Gees as a group returned in 1971 and played in Auckland and Wellington. Then again in new Zealand in Christchurch in 1974, before the ONO show in 1999. Robin did another solo set of shows in 3 NZ cities again in 2011.

@Darrin. I thought Robin returned in 2010, not too long after leaving the hospital. I don't remember him returning in 2011, but perhaps he did. Robin was touring so much after Mo died that it was hard to keep up. I remember in 2011 he was still working on TR and campaigning for the BC. Thanks for the info, Darrin.

Darrin - the Bee Gees without Robin were a bust - one great song that was missing his voice (Don't Forget to Remember) and Rob scored a #2 hit with Saved By The Bell - which would have been a #1 if the Bee Gees recorded it. This break-up reminded me of the numerous Everly Brothers breakups, and they just didn't have that "WOW" factor without each other. Barry admitted much too late that he was basically being selfish when it came to Robin, and he was man enough to admit it - and he has to live with that, so fair play to Barry. Rob had every right to leave the band. His songs were the ones that kept people interested and had depth. But it was Barry's band and he was always the leader. They never really found the right balance after that, but they did become multi-millionaires and charted like crazy. I still think Robin deserved more respect from Barry, but it's al a mute point now. Robin's solo tours after Mo passed showed who was the strongest musician.

I agree with you 100%! If Robin had not gone to Mo and said let's redo this I don't think they would have got back together for many more years. Whenever you watch any of their live concerts the fans literally go nuts when Robin is singing. Robin I believe actually put himself back and encouraged Barry to sing more during the falsetto years he was intelligent and felt it would make them very successful. Barry being Barry just ran with it. When the backlash came I think that they should have re thought lead vocals and put more music out with Robin in the lead. I can listen to him sing all day long. I could only stand so much of Barry and that high pitched singing. It worked out for them however it truly did. I am thankful that Robin went out and did his own solo stuff because he certainly should have had more respect for his musical ability than he was given. I think that not only was he the best singer, but he was definitely the best looking in the band followed by Mo.

@@debbysuedettloff8171 - I agree with you. There was too much favoritism. Hugh did not even want Robin to sing ANY leads (like he did for their 1st #1 in the UK!) and said "I hope he falls flat on his face" when he went solo. Such a sweet daddy, no favoritism there! Barry was livid when, in the early days in the UK, the press called Robin the lead singer. In videos like "Close another door" near the end when Robin starts scatting, if Barry's looks could kill!!!! Hugh, Stigwood (and others) coerced DJ's not to play Robin's solo songs to get him back in the group and Stigwood paid big bucks to buy out Robin's contract with Vic Lewis. Drummer Colin Peterson said "the group will never make it without Robin's voice". It was all about looks and thinking Barry was the matinee idol type. I always preferred Robin. The awkward duckling became a swan. The twins also had the most humor and charisma....that is whenever they got a chance to speak. The group also did, as you said, keep the "disco" stuff and falsetto too long and paid for it for the entire remainder of their career, being blacklisted. After that there was no stopping Barry and there was no way he wanted to relinquish front and center to his little brother. EGO++++. Robin was always the one who drew my attention since I first heard and saw them in 1967. He had to leave or would have been buried as just a back up singer. More and more people are noticing the importance of Mo and Rob now with the recent release of old videos.

A lot of his 're-makes' , to me, really drives the point home!....but if course we wouldn't have had those Beautiful harmonies of the brothers.. or their great interactions together on and off stage!.......so I guess I just answered my own question! lol. ,
@kl36208 жыл бұрын
+Gloria. My information re: the Bee Gees comes from multiple sources: years of listening to their interviews; numerous biographys; and years of fan chatter. Some of the Bee Gees chat is fact, some speculation. In their interviews, watching each brother is more beneficial than listening to what they say, at least for me. I've always been a Bee Gee fan and have felt they were better together than solo. They've all expressed this at one time or another. It's no secret that Robin's voice for me is tops. His voice introduced me to the brothers. With that said, Barry was no slouch, he had a wonderful full voice. I've never been a fan of his unrelenting falsetto, and I love falsetto. Some things he sang in falsetto he nailed it, but for the most part, it wasn't my cup of tea. They all had different talents--Barry was an excellent song writer and his skills as a producer were much better than Robin's, IMO. However, Barry pushed the envelop on over production, at times, so did a Robin. Barry was a consistent song writer, Robin not as much. But this is where their talents differ. Barry, to me was more commercial, Robin was artistic. That's not to say Robin couldn't pull out a commercial hit, he has. SBTB and Julliette are two examples. But I could never see Barry writing something as artistic as Odessa or HFW and many of their more quirky songs. And let's not leave out Brother Mo. His talents lie in production, instrumental, and arranging. He also had a killer harmony vocal. His solo vocals, to me, we're not in the league of his brothers. I've heard each of them including Andy say Robin had the best voice. Technically I believe he did, but not everyone loved Robin's warbling. I can't answer your question with fact because, well, Robin never shared this info. with me. Lol. But like I said, they've all admitted to being better together. What Robin was writing in 69/70 had a more underground flair, avante guard feel to it. How much money do you think he'd make if he had continued in this vein? It's no secret Robin was fanatical about chart position and they all only focused on the hits. What a shame. I seriously doubt much of Robin's solo material would top the pop charts. I'm not chart centric and I very much liked Robin's material from this period. Robin could be Robin. As a solo he was unfiltered from his brothers more commercial appeal. His brothers, particularly Barry could stop Robin from going over the edge as he did on HFW. However, Robin could push Barry a little closer to the edge as to not be so generic. Again, they all had different talents. They all had solo albums recorded during this time. Robin had written SSS, but it was Robin's stuff that became cult classic so to speak. He had a different style. Personally, I've always been drawn to Robin's solo material above his brothers. It wasn't generic. As far as Robin returning to the fold, it's no secret Robin was put through the ringer when he left. His pill addiction was made public; Barry went after him in the press; Stiggy was suing him; and Hugh was trying to make him a ward of the court. They accused his wife of keeping Robin away from his family, which if anyone knew Robin, he's always had his own mind. But you can't overlook, Robin was pretty wasted during this time. He said Britian had M16s around every tree. Really Robin. His ramblings in some of his interviews are classic, although Robin was a classic rambler. Lol. Barry tried to replace Robin when he left but Stiggy wasn't having it, he wasn't replacing Robin. Later Stiggy needed the boys together as he was taking his company public. So much of this was business, but it's no secret they truly missed each other. As Robin said, it's no fun having a top record if you can't share it with your brothers. Mo later said when Robin left he felt as though half of him was missing, after all, he is my twin. The twins got back together first and wrote and recorded before Barry joined them a few months later. Mo never had the animosity towards Robin like Barry did. Mo publicly apologized to Robin, although Mo never took the pop shots at Robin in the press. Mo worked with Robin for M&J until Stiggy put a stop to it, and of course Barry was furious that Mo was working with his twin. Anyway, they were better together.
@gloriamaryhaywood22178 жыл бұрын
kitty larue Please Disregard everything I just wrote!...coz I can't even Imagine not having these 3 wonderful brothers singing and performing Together!!! We would've Missed it All for Sure!....but yeah, I think you are absolutely correct that Robin and Barry helped hold each other in check from either one of them venturing a little too far to the edge either way!lol And Hell No....I entirely agree that Barry was certainly No Slouch vocally himself!...I Love it when he and Robin trade-off on the lyrics and join in the chorus ..both singing with and over each others voices as well as cutting in and out with each others singing! Ahhh..Thats when the 'pure magic' happens with me! And yes, 'falsetto' most definitely has its place in music...but I consider it like the spices used in cooking....you've really got to innately know exactly what spice to use..exactly how much..and probably most important of all ..in which recipe it is called for!Lol. And I'm not forgetting Mo even for a moment!..He was such an integral part of this band-of-brothers ..that without him..well, we all saw what happened?! ....What a Treat heaven loaned us with these beautiful guys...and to say I 'm grateful ..would be a Huge understatement!.......

It's disgusting to see a singer like Robin Gibb sing for such a rude audience. Maybe they were expecting the Bee Gees on stage, but even that does not justify such rudeness. It is good to remember that of the group, only he was successful in a solo career, in the 80's mainly.

Robin went into the next song right after he recovered from the tackle but things got worse. More things were thrown and someone else tried to get onstage. He left but the crowd started chanting "We want Robin! We want Robin!" It was a mess. There's and extended version of this clip that starts out, ironically enough, with Robin and some manager-type person discussing security with the guy in charge of it. There's a follow- up conversation with the same 3 people where Robin utters the immortal line "I don't like my audience to know I'm terrified." He had bad luck with enthusiastic fans and once got a pretty bad shiner when another crowd got out of hand.

I was there and l thought that Robin was the wrong act for that time of night up until then it was all heavy rock and roll. Robin should have been on earlier before it got dark and before the trouble makers had gotten drunk then the " Stormtroopers" made their appearance. The next day was perfect as many families had come, and the atmosphere was completely different, then Robins performance was spot on. My favourite part of living in Auckland at that time was seeing "The Human Instinct" playing at Bo Peeps night club every weekend and of course all the anti Viet Nam war demonstrations.

I was there and l thought it was a mistake in the timing Robin should have been on earlier when it was still light putting him on after the crowd was worked up with heavy rock and roll and alcohol was asking for trouble. I made a reply to Patriciamarie100 towards the end of these comments please read that for more information.

Doesn't seem right to see or hear him sing a BeeGees song without his brothers.

I see this was in 1970 so robin would been 19 or 20.so he was on his own at this time..good see old footage like this.probably wasn't much security. Im sure he or anyone else was expecting this I'm sure he got thrill out of it.afa n.a.JJ.

I don't know that being tackled by a stranger on stage would have been much of a thrill especially since there was a large, drunken crowd that security plainly had zero control over and numerous projectiles had already been flung at the stage.

@@ericjones1289 For some reason the band continued right into the next song (World, I think) and as soon as Robin recovered, he stepped back to the mike and jumped into the exact correct spot in the song. He wasn't drunk.
