This artwork is called the Bayeux Tapestry. It depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England in 1066. It measures 70 ft in length and was done by nuns during the mid 1070s. The original tapestry is still on display today in a museum in Bayeux, Normandy.

Robin Hood would of taken place during the reign of King John which was like 100 years after the normen conquest. I think they use the tapestry in the intro because it sets the scene and because the tapestry shows heroics much like the movie

Richard I and John and the whole Plantagenet dynasty were descended from the Norman invaders depicted on that tapestry, so maybe that was why they showed it in the beginning. (?)

There are a dozen better epic sword warrior movies then this - the ones with white heroes: Merlin 1998 (Steve Barron); Braveheart; The 13th warrior; King Arthur 2004 (Fuqua); Alexander the Great (Oliver Stone); and maybe the bests IN STORY: Earthsea miniseries (by Ursula K. Le Guin's story), Kingdom of Heaven (R. Scott), and The Princess Bride (by William Goldman's script and novel).

Darkwing Dork I was hoping someone else brought that up, someone said that the Bayeux Tapestry was just thrown in there because it's a famous medieval document, but that seems like too much of a coincidence. When I first saw the movie I certainly thought it was an effective way to comment on Saxon-Norman tensions I had come across in the legend.
@russellsugden15 жыл бұрын
Great sound track. Of course the Tapestry depicts the Norman French conquest of the Germanic/Nordic Kingdom of Anglo-Saxons over 100 years before the Robin Hood legend It's setting the scence of a country made into slaves (serfs) by the conquest. Robin Hood (who didn't exsist) is symbolic of resistance to the Norman aristocrats by the native germanic people england. It's pure guff but reminds the english who were are and who the country's "nobles" really are
