I saw procol harum at least a couple times, once in Berkeley in "71 when Salty Dog and just been released, but the most memorable time was back in the midwest in the 60s and forgive me if I don't remember a lot from then but I do remember that when their set started it was thundering and lightning all through their set. When the set ended, which was the last of the outdoor concert, the rain finally began. What a time that was!

I had the privilege to listen to this great band when they performed in San Diego CA I'm 67 years of age and still listen to them and so do all of my daughters. For some of you young music appreciators, you need to know that that music other the W. Shade of Pale was never played in AM stations, only in FM. It was called Underground Music, so was Ten Years After, Uria Heep and other bands during the '60s. They refused Bob Dylan to appear on TV, It warms my heart to find out that U appreciate them

This song is the way they concluded their first album and their live shows early on. This is a monumental piece of music, because it was the first "classical rock" composition recorded. Robin Trower's guitar solo on the original recording has to be listed in the top five rock guitar solos of all time, because of not only it's skill and soulfulness, but due to the bridge he crossed between classical music and electric rock guitar. Gary Brooker's spellbinding piano break (brilliant arrangement) is from J.S. Bach's Prelude No 1 in C major from his 48 Preludes and Fugues, Book I. This was pure genius that went largely unnoticed in the shadows of Sgt. Pepper .... Our radio and alternative media was not up to full-speed at that point.

My first encounter with this song was 10 minutes after hearing it & being told the band I was in had to learn it for a Halloween gig…. This was 1968? It still gives me chills.
@JamesDolen-dn6wz6 ай бұрын
It’s a perfect Halloween song. Although Walpurgis Night was the night before Mayday there was also a Celtic tradition on what became Halloween night marking the beginning of the “season of dark”. An opening from the land of the dead appeared on the surface of the earth and the living, drunk on grog, had to take care to avoid being caught in it and sent to the land of the dead. This song captures the essence of the terror of that night perfectly.

So sad that dear Gary died earlier this year - such a huge loss. We will all miss his love of Baroque music, especially of Handel, although here, of course, he plays a bit of Bach - Prelude No.1 from The Well -Tempered Clavier, Book 1. We were going to see them at London Palladium complete with orchestra in February, but, sadly, it was not to be. However, I'm lucky enough to have seen the band about 23 times, including three with Robbie, five with Mick Grabham and countless times with the great Geoff Whitehorn - one of the best-ever concerts was in Tallinn in Estonia, where Gary was a National Hero. The band was also great at the Rock for Horsepower concert at Kenney Jones' polo park in Surrey, which included John Parr, Judie Tzuke, Jeff Beck, The Who, Mick Hucknall and others (see my review on the PH site). The main organ theme is a set four chords and the guitar section, as Matthew once said, "was a chance for Robin to 'wig out!'" - never the same twice! The lovely and brilliant Geoff Whitehorn (about the nicest guy you're ever likely to meet) does a brilliant job here on this hallowed instrumental - it's NOT "a song!" Marvellous!

Later on in life my interest went to classical music and nowadays I'm more into 15th century flemish polyphony. But I daresay that Procol Harum has influenced my musical tasts for the better. I am now (re-)discovering all Procol's sixties and seventies creations, and I can tell you boys and girls, this old man is having a ball !!!!!
