I actually agree with a lot of your assessments here. As writers, we had a much harder road with the second two installments. Late in the game, the production company decided our original scripts had, and I quote, "Too much sci-fi." Which is an odd comment considering the main character is a cyborg, and it was being broadcast on what was then the Sci-Fi Channel. We had to very quickly re-write two almost brand new scripts, with an emphasis on action over character and more cerebral ideas. We tried to stay true to the emotional arcs, and I think we mostly succeeded there -- despite a lot of resistance from other parties. It's vindicating to know those are the elements that ended up resonating through the noise, and fighting for them was worthy. Unfortunately, yeah, things got dumbed-down. A lot. LEGION was originally supposed to be a rogue aspect of SAINT, manipulating Kaydick into helping it covertly complete an independent piece of code so it could free itself from OCP and be the big bad for part four. When that was kiboshed, I quickly came up with the idea of the techo-organic virus to drive the story. Mea culpa. Thank you for this wonderful trip down memory lane. Nice to know that our forgotten show isn't _completely_ forgotten. Cheers!

Incredible to actually hear from a writer on this show. I hope that seeing that there are fans that appreciate the character aspects of this show is something that eases possibly difficult memories. I think you nailed old Alex Murphy, and there are some cool ideas and genuinely funny moments of comedy and prescient satire. I'd love to pick your brain some more about the experience if you wanna reach out on twitter. My DMs are open.

So, back in the day, I was an actor. I started out doing background work, then moved up to more principal gigs. I eventually quit the whole industry altogether, but that's another story... The story I want to tell you about is the 2nd time I got cast in a RoboCop production. You see, I live outside of Toronto, where the TV series, and the "Prime Directives" miniseries were shot. I was already a huge fan of everything RoboCop in general because of the original film, and to get a tiny spot in the original TV series was quite the thrill, and I couldn't WAIT to see Robo himself! Unfortunately, I was cast in a scene that didn't involve him. To make it worse, they edited out the footage I was in as the camera panned across the room. Flash forward a few years later... new agent... better work... I get the call to play a street hustler for a new RoboCop show (Prime Directives)! The producer told me when I was cast that I was going to be in a scene with RoboCop! I was beyond excited! The scene called for Robo to nudge me when he walked by while I was trying to make a score. I COULDN'T WAIT! So, the day came. I'm on set, in wardrobe. Ready for action. That's when the PA came out to describe the scene to us. He started talking about RoboCop being in disguise, because he's trying to hide. Immediately, alarm bells started ringing in my head. "Disguise"? How does RoboCop DISGUISE himself? What, is he gonna put on a Groucho Marx mustache? This sounds weird. Well, my questions were answered when Page Fletcher stepped out in his RoboCop outfit... and he looked SO TINY! I was like, "is that a little boy?" Maybe that's his disguise for the scene? No one is looking for RoboKid? But, then they put a friggin' Jedi robe over him, and covered his head with the hood. Is this show supposed to be a screwball comedy? Because, this looks goofy as hell. As the shoot went on (2 days), it became clear that everyone on set knew that this was going to be a total shitshow of a production. Morale started to run low, as well as everyone's nerves. Then, the PA came up to tell me that the scene I was going to be featured in is going to be scrapped. I wanted to go home right there. Keep the paycheck. I want out. Anyway... I think that's probably the reason why I absolutely HATE this RoboCop series. It's not just the boring cinematography, or the lousy score, or lazy production design, or the lame special effects, or crummy acting, or cheesy slow-motion to make up for zero action choreography... no. It was because that was the SECOND TIME I GOT CUT OUT OF A ROBOCOP PRODUCTION! Wanna hear about the THIRD time I got cut out of a RoboCop production? Just re-read about the first time I got cut, and just update it for the 2014 remake. I love RoboCop... but RoboCop doesn't love me. (sad face emoji)

My dude, it pains me to say that unless some future WORTHWHILE Robo-adaptation where things can go right for you happens (and really, what a tagline to send your CV with!), maybe you're in the best possible universe and Alex Murphy DOES have your back. Barring, of course, access to a time machine or universe-hopping technology where you can try your luck as an extra in the 1987 original. If that happens, please try your luck in the dance club scene.

As a RoboCop fan, I totally understand that Peter Weller IS Murphy. Not saying that it’s impossible for any other actor to do a great job at it… I mean, people are still arguing over who the best James Bond, or Batman is to this very day, and they’ve been around longer than some grandparents. Heck, Doctor Who has been switching actors for 60 years, and they seem to be doing just fine! If the character is written well enough, then it’s just down to the right casting. I’m sorry, but Page Fletcher was the shortest person on the entire cast, except for the little girl. If this was a purposeful choice by the filmmaker to visually make RoboCop not look as “big” of a deal as he used to, then all you do is not shoot him from a low angle anymore. You don’t hire a midget (apologies to Page Fletcher). But, what can you expect from a movie with the most basic cinematography outside of TV commercials? Then you’ve got the “action” scenes. I’m thinking that the production team had never seen RoboCop before. Since when does he just stand in one spot, and just pivot his waist to gun people down? When is he going to MARCH towards them? How about all of those stylistic poses that Murphy would pull off inside the machine? No? You’re just going to have him just stand there, and the CAMERA will do all the movement! Then, why not cheapen it all with a horrible slow-motion effect. Faaaan-frickin-tastick. And, who was responsible for that awful sound design?! Again… someone who CLEARLY has never seen RoboCop before. Why did they make him sound like a trash can being slowly rolled down a flight of stairs? Is this their attempt at making him sound “older”? Well, you should add subtle offbeat clicks, or maybe a slightly worn out gear sound. YOU DON’T CHANGE THE ENTIRE COMPOSITION OF HIS METALLIC STRUCTURE! He went from titanium, to tin. Oy gevalt! The music was awful, the cringy dialogue made the acting worse, and again… I cannot stress enough how having a dwarf (sorry, Page) play RoboCop is the greatest of all RoboCop sins… next to pairing him up with the hologram of a dead secretary. (shudders) The ONLY thing that I liked about “Prime Directives” is the look of RoboCable. That’s it. I didn’t like his overly robotic voice. I mean, even the original RoboCop didn’t sound that artificial. The digital modulation of his voice was way too much. But, was there anything else that I liked? Um… no, I think that’s about it. RoboCable LOOKED cool. Taa-daa.

in short, it has soo many bad things that it cannot be called a good show but it also has many good things that i cannot be called a bad show and the actor makes a fantastic job at showing emotions. When the helmet is on you see a hard lifeless expresion with his mouth but when the helmet is off you can see all the real emotions revealed. The mouth still keeps the same cold stance but the eyes show sadness, dispair, horror. It makes you realise how much of robocop's true humanity hidden by the helmet, perhaps in some moments he is shocked, perhaps in others he is scared, or perhaps in others he is in rage but we never get to know untill a massvie outburst like when he screams after killing cable. Its a small detail that in my opinion makes Page Fletcher's robocop special just like peter weller.

For those who don’t know, in the end Sarah was sued by everyone in Delta City. She was also prosecuted for the crimes of OCP. She lost her position in the company and was left completely and utterly destitute personally and professionally. As for OCP itself, James was the only executive left unscathed after the ordeal with SAINT. He assumed ownership of OCP, becoming it’s President and CEO with a majority share in the company. Under James Murphy, OCP was restructured from top to bottom as a benevolent enterprise, positively giving back to Delta City and working within the confines of the law…lead with justice by Officer Alex J. Murphy (Robocop)

Fun fact: They couldn't get the rights to the scenes from the movie, so they used that door slamming scene from the other TV show Also, EMPs still do damage to things that are off. The reason they do damage, is the magnetism of the pulse gets converted to electricity in anything capable of acting like an antenna (ie: tiny wires), and thus you get electricity in places of a circuit that weren't meant to handle that amount of power

I always heard Prime Directives was pretty good, and honestly seeing these reviews, I think it's the main character moments, and less the plot that gives it the shine people attach to and normally remember. bad visual moments and stupid virus/hacking stories aside. The Murphy family, and every one around them are the main focus, and they have such genuine heart felt moments that you can't stop rooting for them, and want to see how their story ends. A very effective through line.

The worst part of the stupid Saint/Legion plot is Terminator Genisys totally ripped it off wholesale. Only somehow it made it dumber. I kind of expected S.A.I.N.T. to have a more sinister plot twist. I had imagined this moment where they learned that it was never an A.I. , but an even darker version of the robocop program, where they had actually taken a baby and connected him to the system as a way to keep him alive while meeting the interests of the ocp suits; but it being a child and receiving only data and little to no nurturing, it's natural wishes and lack of self-control causing all kinds of catastrophes. Then again, that probably would have been too messed up. Even for this universe.

I went, I watched, I saw. It wasn't all bad. And honestly BOTH guys did an amazing job AS cyborgs, they both brought the character to the fore among a mechanical performance. Meatloaf is Not Nicholas Knight. As he played Nick Knight in the Canadian Forever Knight (really fun vampire cop story...the irony huh?) Here, he's sporting the blonde hairdo that his sire LeCroix has in the show, so it COULD be a callback to that. Honestly you're right. Lots to love. The story beats are there, but the last half is ooooof. Multiple sequels, series, etc, and THIS series has not one but TWO good actors just killing it. It does have its goody moments. It's clearly on a budget. However, there were a bunch of good ideas hidden in it. Something to consider, is the fact that this was 2001 when it came out. It was a different time, with things like 9/11 being a fresh horror event, and also you had the panic of Y2K. Because of there being a lot of older technology and computers still being used, there was a serious concern that key infrastructure would fail on 1st January 2001. That is because of date limitations in older software. It means that there are elements of this that just will not be understood by younger audiences, because they never went through years of mounting hysteria over it. Hysteria that turned out to be for nothing, as all of the potential calamity had been spotted enough years in advance, and dealt with in time. Also, the theme of a virus corrupting an AI/computer system was a concern in that time period. Look at Terminator 3, and the reimagined Battlestar Galactica. A similar idea in both of them. I am not saying this was brilliant - it is massively flawed. But it had heart and care put into it. It just needed a bigger budget to pull it off better.

I remember watching these a few years ago, overall they are not good, but as you mentioned you can at least take some aspects that they either did well or you can appreciate as a RoboCop fan. I have always felt that this probably would have been better if they used the same budget, but maybe only made a single movie instead. I always liked Page Fletcher's freaking out when his memory is unlocked, it felt accurate for all the trauma coming back. I also enjoyed Maurice Dean Wint as Cable, he did look a little uncomfortable in the suit though, I believe these were still modified RoboCop 2 suits a little like Robert Burke's was.

I think this whole Prime Directives miniseries, in hindsight, can be described as “Whatever Happened to the Future of Law Enforcement?” akin to “Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?”

I first watched Prime Directives thru AXN Asia. I was already on college so seeing the TV level effects/feel made me ready for the very slow parts. Hopefully if there would be a new Robocop movie it would take some stuff from this and the TV series. Theres some good ideas here. It just needs a bigger budget.

Loving these videos. My biggest problem with these movies was always the lighting. They all seemed so dark.....I assume it was a thematic choice but it just dulls it down rather than add anything too it. Hoping one day we get Robocop series set of vids 🤞....Yes it is pretty bad but a total guilty pleasure of mine.

Heya, as a massive RoboCop fan I've been enjoying your takes on the series and it's refreshing to see other aspects of the story being taken into consideration. Been loving your takes on all of the RoboCop stuff(including Rogue City, which I absolutely enjoyed and have been playing through multiple times). I was wondering do you really plan on doing the 2014 remake as well ? I think that one had arguably at least better execution than 3 and it seemed to get a few things right, while failing a lot of others.

46:00 Yeah... that's not how EMP's work. Robocop wouldn't have survived anyway because the EMP would have fried the electronics and the power source that keeps him running, even when shut down. Something has to keep the brain active and if he has the ability to reboot without outside sources, then something is constantly running. Literally protected by the thickest plot armor.

I bought these on Amazon. I love the 80s version of Robocop and I even watched the Robocop show when it was on air. I think a soft boot of the series would do well if they brought back Robocable. Like Robocop 4 redo the story of Prime Directives but instead of Bonecrusher you can have a mystery villain killing random people for a purpose and have Saint already infected with the virus then toward the end of the film you can have a twist that Saint really was Skynet and introduce a T-800 (random villain) into the mix. Then both robocops have to fight the T-800 and take down Skynet.

Now imagine a movie continuation remake of the plot from Prime Directives but the second Robocop is now the one from the new remake. Overall this is a great story with an ending that could easily move into more sci-fi dystopian direction like something from the Dredd comic books but with old Alex Murphy roaming the streets of Cyber Detroit a hundred years on the future fighting new waves of techno bandits who are always a step ahead of him. I would gladly throw any amount of money on that kind of franchise.

I feel like “evil computer virus that infects everyone and everything” seems like something that’s a step way too silly for Robocop. Like, I can understand if Robocop occasionally has to stop a terrorist who wants to assassinate a high-level target, but having him fight doomsday plots by wannabe supervillains is where I draw the line.

I wish RoboCop would finally get a good movie or TV show since the first movie in 1987, everything else was mediocre or disappointing. The second movie was just okay, the third movie is shit, the TV show was shit too and Prime Directives was shit with a few sprinkles of good in between, but a turd with chocolate sprinkles is still a turd. I think remember reading somewhere that Amazon plans to make a new RoboCop movie or show. Yeah, can't wait to see Robo getting the Rings of Power treatment.

Your back, I wondered if you were going to do a sequel pt. 2 but here it is. "Stealth Chicks" or the techy CHARLIE'S ANGELS maybe ha ha I like it, I also agree about this series starting to wane, go down hill, BUT to me the whole series lacks the sense of contrast & sudden shocks of the original, film, Ive always felt that theyve gone for a...Wild West feel to it all, what with the weak tea...quiet spaghetti Western type theme music, as well, showing him going manic panic didnt feel it belonged in this programme & came over as too human, when something doesnt work visually, it,s best to leave it ESPECIALLY in the Sci Fi genra & consentrate on what does instead, even in the cinema offerings after the original film, things started to have...too much science fiction aspect extending it all out too far effecting the believability, and the way there is a character kull to personalise it between leather jacket woman & "meat loaf (who turns out to be her x husbond) Basically it was about 4 episodes too far, (notice how it didnt begin so far fetched).
