It says something about a piece of art when 30+ years on, members of the cast and production team STILL talk about. Hard to imagine many of the throwaway films of this era - cash in today, forgotten tommorrow even coming close to this. Side observation: Peter Weller singlehandedly raised the Robocop franchise from what could've been a crass soulless film to one of a legacy of a man made machine and the man struggling to come through being turned into a cyborg without his consent. His performance sold that struggle and conflict. Verhoeven to his great credit added those deeper layers of satire and social commentary. It's truly a film that the deeper you look at it, the more rewarding and interesting it is.

Business dried up for him in the US. He kept getting more sci-fi scripts, but he wanted to branch out and do romantic comedies. (He said as much in a commentary track; I can't remember which movie it was for.) In the making of Tricked, he literally said he was stuck making movies he didn't like when he was in the US, which is really sad. If he's happier and more satisfied as an artist now, I'm happy for him. I loved Zwartboek and really enjoyed Tricked. I hope he does something after Elle though. Elle wasn't my bag.
@LYCANCLANTEAM3 жыл бұрын
@@DamienDrake Which is very sad,if only he did not do showgirls and leveraged on the hype and success he had after basic instinct, he wouldnt be blacklisted by the studios and would have more artistic freedom in terms of scripts as alot of em only trusted him with sci fi considering how successful his prior films were.

@DamienDrake3 жыл бұрын
@@LYCANCLANTEAM What's really annoying about the Showgirls debacle is how it instantly sank NC-17 as a viable rating for studio films. The MPAA urged him and the studio to release Basic Instinct in its original NC-17 form in order to legitimize the rating. The MPAA could see that it was an excellent film and knew that it would galvanize the rating as more than mainstream porn, as some would believe. The studio refused, saying that if Basic Instinct was a hit then his next movie could be released with the rating. We all know how that went. I can't imagine having the Motion Picture Association of America make a deal like that only to be hamstrung by the studio, and then have the following film tank not only the new rating but your career in the U.S. I'm honestly surprised he didn't take a break after that. It was a truly awful turn of events for such a talented filmmaker. That being said, his approach to Showgirls was some of the worst directing I've ever seen. I had to turn it off early on. Everyone was acting like they were in a Saturday Night Live movie parody. I think the fact that he knew the kid gloves were off meant that he went nuts in the worst way. From what I know about the movie, it wouldn't have been a salvageable story in any case.
@LYCANCLANTEAM3 жыл бұрын
@@DamienDrake Really i didnt know that from what i've heard verhoeven wanted it to be nc-17 but the studios were against it due to advertising and promotional reasosns,as you could not advertise a nc-17 film so they cut scenes and it ultimately got an r rating.(basic instinct i mean) In regards to showgirls,I completely agree,i mean violence and sex is a clearly a trademark of his work but in this case I felt that he was trying too hard to shock the audience instead of sticking to what he's good at

never forget, those guys took a Z movie script called Robocop and turned it into an absolute masterpiece of true modern art.
@turricanedtc37643 жыл бұрын
That's not entirely fair - the script was (with 20/20 hindsight) actually really clever; I mean it contained razor-sharp political satire, comedy, violence and a really profound underlying premise. That said all of this only really became appreciated later - it was ahead of its time in many ways, and because of that, to read it in the early to mid '80s on the page I'm sure it came across as somewhat "cornball". As Peter Weller has pointed out elsewhere, it was turned down by eight or nine US-based directors before Verhoeven received it, and Verhoeven has said that he thought it was trash when he first read it; he admits that it took his wife encouraging him to take a second look at it and think about what he could do with it before he realised the script had the makings of something special.
@msscott223 жыл бұрын
@@turricanedtc3764 100%. The script is awesome.
@DamienDrake3 жыл бұрын
As the others have said, the script was not Z grade in the slightest. It had a silly title, but contained the blueprint for the brilliant movie we know and love today. As they say, if it ain't on the page, it ain't on the stage. The pages of the RoboCop screenplay were bursting with greatness.
@rustneversleeps85 Жыл бұрын
All of you saying the original script was clever and amazing don't seem to know about the concept of rewrites. Verhoeven (as well as other studios) threw it away bc it was probably terrible; after his wife convinced him that there is potential if he reads between the lines, he then worked together with Neumeier to flesh out the good stuff, which turned into what we see today. So no, the original script was probably generic and any cleverness and satire was probably lost among all the generic stuff.

Nancy on and off screen seems to be an awesome human being!! The thing I love most about the movie (s) is Robocop has to "Uphold The Law" or he shuts down!! I think if we ALL lived our lives that way the world would be a better place!! Like Maya Angelou said, "You Know right, JUST do right"!! And like Murphy says in the beginning of the movie, "It's good for boys to have heroes"!
