Putting Kurtwood Smith in this role is one of the best casting decisions in the history of cinema. You expect a villain this ruthless to be physically intimidating. But those little wire-rimmed glasses, that delivery. He was terrifying. You believed that he was capable of such violence. Then keep in mind the kind of people in the 80's who were being cast in such roles. Verhoeven is a genius and visionary. One of the most prescient films of all time. Everything that this film foretold about the world we now live in has come true. I saw it for the first time when it was released. I was in 7th grade then and I am astounded by the way in which it just keeps getting better with age.

I mean with respect to the media, the power of corporations, the loss of worker rights, the decay of urban areas, etc. As for cyborgs on the scale of Robocop, just wait. What I always liked about Clarence as a villain is that there are no clear visual indicators to him being the bad guy. No eyepatch, no gold tooth, no ugly scar (at least not in the beginning), no walking with a limp or anything else as corny as that. He looks pretty much like a normal guy. What makes him scary is his behavior and personality and that makes him much more disturbing. I've seen this movie so many times I can pretty much recite all the lines in it, yet there's still something about Clarence Boddicker that keeps me on the edge of my seat. He is the kind of guy that seems just as likely to crack a joke or to pull out a gun and shoot you in the head. Definitely one of my favorite movie villains!
@cretinousjester34756 жыл бұрын
Supposedly, Smith and Verhoeven based some of his character design on Hienrich Himmler- Hitler's right hand man. He too looked like a desk-clerk but actually played a part in the death of so many people. I think 2 other scary-ass factors are 1) His intelligence- he's pretty witty and smart and 2) His drive- despite being just a normal dude- he came closer to killing Robocop than anyone (for the second time at that).
@cybernautadventurer4 жыл бұрын

Clarence Boddicker is as realistic as they get. I partially regret it wasn't him that they resurrected as Robocop 2.
@blacklegjones25677 жыл бұрын
The Real Mr J. Clarence is very comparable to the joker, taking over the city, murder whenever he likes, got all the money in the city, kills cops, blows up things like grand theft auto, his history of rap sheet, and his normal looking style of average men, robocop is batman to Clarence as he has to deal with him, because he made him! Clarence boddicker and the joker are 2 of my top ten bad guys ever, and third id say Anton Chigurh from No country forold men

I'm a published writer and I majored in English-Literature and studied all the great lits, and Clarence Boddicker is one of the most interesting villains I ever saw. I was a kid when I saw Robocop along with other boys my age. I'm 43 and going to be 44 next month and to this day, 30 years later, my male peers still talk about Clarence Boddicker. I think even Shakespeare himself, along with Melville, Twain, and Thoreau would be intrigued with Boddicker. I don't mean to go deep, but he is a very intriguing villain. You can do a college literature paper on him. He is fearless and doesn't fear death at all because I think he's accepted he's going to die because he knows bad guys die. He laughs at the best life throws at him (doesn't fear jail), and he is so devoted to his employer that he goes after Robocop after Robocop beats him half to death, scares him to death, and turns him in--when he knows the cops hate his guts and want his head. He kept the same crew together for a long time (not an easy task) and they're willing to die for him, and knows how to negotiate with other crime leaders. He is interesting and its obvious this was Kurtwood Smith's best performance of his career. Quick Homages to: Go-Go Yobari, Khan, Joker, etc.,

Kurtwood Smith was fantastic casting and the antithesis of the 1980s movie villain.. The one thing the 2014 remake really lacked was a Clarence Boddicker.
