Fun Fact #3: Peter Weller would eventually go back to school to get his Doctorate in Art History, specializing in Italian Renaissance, and would get a teaching position at Syracuse. First day he would recite all his most quotable movie lines for students to record, then would never speak of it again. His Rate My Professor rating is 4.9 out of 5.0 Fun Fact #4: While its set in Detroit, it was filmed in Dallas, Tx which at the time had one of the most modern skylines. OCP headquarters is actually Dallas City Hall (which is only 7 stories tall so they CGI'd added the extra floors. The OCP boardroom (where ED209 kills during its demo) is now the library for a law firm. I helped with the installation and we spent the entire first day recreating Robocop scenes. Doesn't even count as Trivia: Murphy's home in the flashbacks is in the Lake Highlands neighborhood off Skillman just west of Lake Highlands High School. When me and my ex-wife were home shopping I almost talked her into buying the place. When she found out I mainly wanted the place because it was Robocop's, she was not amused.

RoboCop is an excellent blend of sci-fi and action, smartly critiquing corporate excess and societal issues. It's not just about the crime and the cool effects; it's also a deep dive into themes like privatization and identity. What really hits home is Murphy's struggle to keep his humanity. Good reaction --- but just a friendly FYI. Although Robocop was released in 1987, it was based on the near-future year of 1991. So, the early 1990s technologies (such as the artificial heart in the TV ad, robotics, the over-exaggerated crime, the nuclear-war holographic board game, the automated video real-estate agent etc) were all exaggerated future concepts of what the early 1990s might look like. It's like a filmmaker making a movie in 2024, but it is based on the year 2029. Also, the filmmaker who made Robocop, is noted for including political and social satirical commentaries in his movies. So, in this movie, through some satire, he was highlighting corporate greed and cronyism, with the conflict of interests that military contractors that contract with governments (local, federal, international.) may have in perpetrating more crime and more conflicts domestically and internationally to incentivize government (aka 'TAXPAYERS') to purchase their military products That was among the ideas that the director was trying to convey.

I'm sorry, 1991? Both the news about the military space program and the cybernetic heart ad should be enough to prove that we are at least DECADES in the future from 1987. In fact, in the script there is a cut scene of a news story about the death of Sylvester Stallone at age 97, during a brain transplant procedure. So the year should be 2043, and the fact that they decided to leave this out make the whole setup even more interesting.
@fidel2xl
@fidel2xl Жыл бұрын
@@raffaelecirone157 - Firstly, DUH. Secondly, you should probably file your complaints with the filmmaker. But regardless, when it was released, this 1987 movie was based on the year 1991. Obviously, it's a work of fiction...the same way many fiction writers in the 1960s and 1970s would create TV shows and movies depicting the near future of the year 2000, with people living on the moon and owning flying cars. I have another spolier for you: The movie, 'Back To The Future II' released in 1989, but based in the years 1985, 2015, and 1955, didn't actually get 2015 right either. We still don't have flying cars with anti-grav tech or hoverboards with anti-grav tech. But it doesn't mean that the 1989 movie wasn't based on the year 2015. That's why it's called SCIENCE FICTION, bro.

Robocop is one of the best superhero films, yep I class Robocop as a Superhero as the film was greatly inspired by the 2000AD comic universe with Robocop being heavily inspired by Judge Dredd. The movie itself has so many parallels to Frank Millers The Dark Knight Returns (1986) as well from the news reports, satire, and overall gritty tone that feels right up Millers alley. Makes sense why Miller would later join the writers in Robocop 2 but was very upset with the studio interference, thankfully he wrote some amazing Robocop comic books as well. Marvel released the first Robocop comics from my understanding, something people forget is that Marvel ventures into alot of stuff, for example they were making Star Wars comics back in 1977 and onwards.

I thought it was initially a Judge Dredd script that was rewritten into this because anyone who didn't venture into a comic book specialty store had no clue who JD was. I was wrong. Robocop is the first R-rated superhero film, influencing the likes of Guillermo Del Toro, Robert Rodriguez, Zack Snyder, and Neill Blomkamp. Miller co-wrote the second and third films. 21:51 It’s not about the trailers, per se. It’s about what happens in most any boom town (from gold or oil rushes to new logging sites or just massive construction booms). They hire dozens, hundreds, or thousands of men and stick them in makeshift work camps with no frills and nothing to do in their off hours. The second stage of the boom is always the vice that moves in and sniffs out the workers and their newfound paychecks- bars, casinos, and brothels. The vice bleeds the money from the workers, who stay poor enough they don’t have anywhere else to go. Even worse when “The Company” also owns the bars…

Robocop is so freakin’ cool! Fun fact: Robocop was actually inspired by the Japanese Tokusatsu TV show Space Sheriff Gavan. Gavan is an intergalactic peace-keeping police officer donning metallic cybernetic armor battling the evil forces of the Space Crime Syndicate Makuu. Even though the show never aired in America, this movie’s director Paul Verhoeven watched the show in his hotel room while visiting Japan and apparently enjoyed it so much it lead to creating one of the greatest science fiction and action movies ever made.

They got sued because they ripped off another story MUCH closer by Harlan Ellison and Ben Bova. VK you mentioned how silly and not too imaginative the name Robocop was, well the story this was taken from is about a cyborg cop but the story had a much better name - Brillo. If you don't know brillo is that little metal scrub pads with soap - so it's metal fuzz - and cops in the 70s were called "the fuzz".

Overall, he was a good man. He was also doin' pretty _well_ for himself. He wasn't exactly livin' it up in the lap of luxury, but he wasn't struggling to make ends meet, _either._ This gives you insight into the tremendous _tragedy_ that occurred when he was _massacred._ _All_ of this just _ended._

Paul Verhoeven is a Dutch filmmaker largely known for three things in his films; political/social commentary via satire, copious amounts of gratuitous violence, and (to a lesser extent) sexual content. Including Robocop, some of his most well know directorial credits are Total Recall (1990), Basic Instinct (1992), Showgirls (1995), and Starship Troopers (1997).

The idea of Robocop defines what kind of hero is needed in places like Old Detroit. The human spirit cannot be broken, torn away and defeated by the corruption that stands before it. A summer blockbuster, social satire and urban action thriller that indeed blew away the masses. Also an Academy Award winner for Best Sound Design. One of the first-ever Rated-R properties to transition into multiple mediums. From film to live action & animated television, toys, video games, comics and more. Speaking of video games, his appearance in Mortal Kombat 11 expansion:'Aftermath' (2020) and his recent return in Robocop:Rogue City (2023) harkens back to what makes the character so iconic. "The Future of Law Enforcement" was the tagline. This film surely was ahead of it's time.

The thing about this movie is that at that point in time in the 80's, there was a rash of "dystopian, over-violent, urban future police-state"-style movies. Everyone of the was cheesy, relatively low-budget, and mostly poorly received. The along comes "Robocop". And it encapsulated EVERYTHING the others were trying to do, and had a unique direction/cinematographic style, and just perfected the formula in a very niche genre. That's the reason it became so prevalent in culture. For perspective, the only movies that came close to doing this formula justice didn't come out for a long time. The BEST example of this (imo) would be "Dredd" (2012) with Karl Urban (which is TOTALLY underappreciated). And though it's not the EXACT genre, 2015's "Mad Max: Fury Road" is an excellent "genre-adjacent" example. (Also, though it's basically the complete opposite, "Demolition Man" [1993] was a fun, barely-related spin on the "Robocop" genre, but I mention it because to me, they always FELT like they belong in the same kind of grouping.) So, yeah... "Robocop" became a thing for unexpectedly, valid reasons. And if you like this, check out "Dredd", "Fury Road", and "Demolition Man". And I invite everyone to reply with their recommendations for this genre. If nothing else, I'D like to see what movies I've missed out on. :D

I recently watched a four part documentary called RoboDoc, highly recommended. One of my favorite stories from it was how Peter Weller was kind of a method asshole on set, he refused to answer to anything but RoboCop between takes. At one point, he kept going, "Robo wants an Oreo!" and this guy was so annoyed with him that he ate all the Oreos, then Peter Weller refused to do the next scene until someone went and got him more Oreos.

@fajarkurniawan9434 agree. I don't care what somebody wants me to call them, that's their choice. "Robo wants an Oreo" is probably one of the nicest ways any PA has been *asked* (that's expressing a desire, not a demand) to get snacks when the actor is stuck in a costume that mostly immobilizes them! If some a-hole then ate them all, yeah, I'd need out of the costume to go get my own snacks and production can suck it. The guy could barely move under studio lights while engaged in plastic with latex glued to his face; I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt on this one. More data points needed.

Man, I miss the energy, comedy, and eyes for viscerally shocking people directors like Verhoven brought to the table back in the day. I know we still get great movies now but back in the eighties and nineties, it felt like every director was trying something new and off the wall to get their name out there (Like the prop for the headshot on Murphy being so obscenely executed that I think I remember an account of the actor playing the baddy was so disgusted he said he was glad they got it in one take 😅) . Even the crap back then had something going for it. Glad you enjoyed this gem.

It's interesting that you commented on Robocop's movements. That was a big hurdle Peter Weller had to clear to nail his character. Getting those mannerisms down, all while wearing this huge foam rubber and plastic costume, escaped Weller for a long time. He was so frustrated he considered backing out of the movie. He called upon one of his acting mentors, a famous French mime, as a last resort. His mentor basically told Weller that whatever movements he made, to make them even more robot-like. Weller did it and, BAM! Robocop was born. BTW, the first scene Weller did in costume was when the police captain tossed him the keys to the cruiser. It required an insane number of takes (I think 70 or 80 takes) to get it right. That's how difficult moving in the costume was.
