Before I start watching and understanding this great piece of a tutorial, I want to say thank you very much to you, Sir. A couple of days ago, I came short with an answer to a practical lab session I was doing to prepare myself for the A+ 220-1002 exams. You are definitely sent by patience and kindness, love and God to upload this video on Robocopy. Thank you in advance for the next and I thank the grace of patience and kindness (1 corinthians 13:4 and 1 John 4:8) for your amazing work, support and hard work.

When using the /MT:n command, how can you determine the best number of threads to use to optimize the transfer speed of files? I understand that the higher number is usually better but at what point does it become too much for your CPU?

Such a great question! I love to see viewers think about these issues! I often use Process Explorer to watch my hardware subsystems when I push intensive actions. You have limited network, disks than can be overwhelmed and of course your CPU. Your disks and network will most likely the first to become limited. Using Process Explorer will give you a good sense of your limits.

I would like to correct an error. When copying the parent folder, you must also set the destination folder with the same name as the source folder so that all the timestamps and permissions are copied properly and there is a true 1:1 copy: For example, robocopy "C:\source_folder\test" "D:\destination_drive\test" /E /dcopy:DAT /A-:SHAR this ensures that the test folder is a true 1:1 copy robocopy "C:\source_folder\test" "D:\destination_drive" /E /dcopy:DAT /A-:SHAR is INCORRECT because the test folder is just being renamed as destination_drive with incorrect timestamps.

One question comes to mind: Can it do block level copy? ReFS deduplicated files I want to move are extremely slow. Normally on the same synology raid5 I get about 300-500MB/sec, with deduped files it is about 20-50MB/s 😕 I have 30tb+14tb to relocate.
@TechsavvyProductions
@TechsavvyProductions Жыл бұрын
In general, block-level copying of ReFS deduplicated files is not recommended as it can cause issues with the deduplication metadata. When you copy a file that has been deduplicated using ReFS, the file's actual data may not be copied, but instead, a reference to the data stored in the Deduplication store is created. This reference is tracked by ReFS in the file's metadata, and if you perform a block-level copy of the file, it can cause inconsistencies between the file's metadata and the Deduplication store. Additionally, block-level copying of ReFS deduplicated files can also cause issues with file permissions and other metadata that is not stored in the Deduplication store. Therefore, it is recommended that you use standard file copy operations to copy ReFS deduplicated files, rather than block-level copying. If you need to perform a backup or migration of ReFS deduplicated files, you should use a tool that is specifically designed to work with ReFS deduplication, such as Windows Server Backup or a third-party backup solution that supports ReFS deduplication.

@TechsavvyProductions Thanks for your answers. You have described my problem well. It seems that we do have issues on system level. Server 2019 ltsc stopped at version 1809, and as I've read the performance problems are dealt with from 1903. We are on ltsc though, so this is not an option. A normal copy operation dips as low as 20mbit/s, as I copy veeam repositories. Veeam backup copy on the other hand is around 300mbit/s...
