I wish we just had 2016 RC. Actual wings, CPU-based matchmaking, cool weapons, old maps, old battle arena, actual currency and overall the peak of RC. As a RC veteran, I'm somewhat excited for the Rebuild but I'm worried about Freejam messing it up yet again with constantly changing their vision for the game.

I don't think FJ need to make the exact same game just modernized with updated visuals to succeed. Plenty of studios manage to succeed with major changes between titles and versions of these titles. However Freejam is starting to get quite the track record of releasing half baked titles and then jump ship as soon as they don't get instant good reviews and player numbers. In my opinion what Freejam needs to do to succeed regardless of what game they are making is to first of all understand that they got lucky with RC1. It was also half baked at release but it was something new. It did not really have competition. They need to reach a much higher level of polish pre EA release and also dare to stick to their stuff and improve the game they are making and not just jump top the next project over and over.

I followed RC2 since the first NA Playtest. At first FJ was pretty active with diving in forums and engaging with community suggestions. During these times it really felt like FJ was making a game that was supposed to be more of a spiritual successor to RC1 rather than a direct mechanical/gameplay sequel . For a short while things looked good, even if flawed. I think some time after a ton of bugs just started piling up that seemingly never got fixed, or took ages. The camera would constantly clip and jitter around, and most notably the "Plasma Bypass" bug which mark supposedly confirmed was a feature. Essentially Plasma in RC2 spawned shrapnel on impact, but there was a mechanic that made this Shrapnel spawn several blocks further from the initial point "Bypassing" blocks of armor. Weapons also had a penetration mechanic, which meant the shrapnel kept traveling through blocks until all its "energy" was depleted. This meant Plasma Bypass essentially allowed for small bots to be 1 shot because of the extra blocks that was ignored ontop of the penetration mechanic, which was never fixed. On top of this the gamemode felt terrible to play. Needing to sit on a point all game was not very engaging. FJ tried to overhaul the gamemode by adding shields to your towers if you were defending, but this only encourage sitting on point the entire game even more. Things only got worse and there was no sign of previous issues getting fixed. It's almost as if they kept rushing out features. As mentioned in the video FJ not only pushed for plushies (though to be more fair to FJ, the community did suggest and express interest in the idea), they also pushed out a battle pass. At the time, while I thought it was a bad idea, I could atleast justify it as this would be FJ's main longterm project and the battlepass would be purely cosmetic. It was there if you wanted to continue supporting the development of the game. In hindsight it feels like it ties into the weirdly solidified Early Access release date. Freejam were oddly bound by the Early Access relase date, as if they had no control and HAD to push it out. The community hated the idea, and everyone know that going EA on steam was like pandoras box. It had to be a good first impression and the game just had 0 polish, time, or the proper features to be on steam. Around this time I'd say the community were very doubtful for the game's future, or at the very least in FJ's capability of making the game good. Pretty much after EA is when the game went downhill and died, and it died fast. There were plenty of changes rushed out seemingly in a knee jerk response to steam reviews, and overall FJ started listening to the discord less and less. They made a TTK change which was so poorly received that it pretty much chopped what little players we had left in half. Then they dropped Hovers, which bred the most degenerate bots/gameplays in the game's history. Shortly after they went on their break which we were expecting huge overhauls and fixes to the game's current system after they returned, but we came back with the news that the just axed the game as a whole. The saddest part is the lack of a party system on steam release, to me that is one of the biggest failings ive ever seen. In a way it feels they were forced to push out monetization and EA as soon as possible, and essentially just gave up after initial steam reviews. I dont necessarily mind the idea of FJ returning to RC1's, but you can tell the desperate attempt of nostalgia bait even just playing the basic builder demo they dropped. Fancy sounds whenever you place blocks is shallow and cheap. Hard to say if the new project will be good or not, but you can tell they didn't return to the "RC15" style of robocraft out of genuine interest. There were plenty more problems with the game, but to me it was atleast fun (for the most part anyway). It fulfilled the vehicle fantasy part of Robocraft really well, something RC1 couldn't quite do for me as a kid. I'm just sad to see RC2 canned so early without the proper care it deserved. It's easy to poke fun at it now, but if FJ overhauled some parts of RC2 and fixed some major bugs it could've been a real special experience.

Welcome back! It's a Great video, but there was a few errors. I do agree with many points don't get me wrong but i feel like i need to point them out. Not Listening to dedicated players - They did. Kind of, they listened to dedicated RC2 players, by asking them on RC2 discord server's forum.. I don't think it was the best place to ask either. No custom gamemodes / Too much promised on roadmap - Custom gamemodes wasn't far fetched, the maps themselves are made in world editor, which is why they look so bad, and we already had access to it in their older title, Techblox, and they did release the stuff on their roadmap, most of the times. But I will not forgive them for not releasing tank tracks after 14 months of wait. Speaking of tank tracks - They were on hold for a long time because devs were focusing on fixing bugs. That's all I could've pointed out, I also want to tell my experience with rc2, but i will leave it in my comments.

When they announced RC2rb I got just as mad as RC1 players when they saw RC2, I was RC2 player since it's first actual release, on October 10 2022, I was a very active player and active in their discord community, sure it was flawed but i had fun, even got lucky to get in closed multiplayer tests before they became public, and got into a clan, it was great, but i was slowly losing interest Last time i remember having fun in this game was when i participated in a small community event, which was racing, we would all join at the end of multiplayer playtests (mp was at set times) and race with modified starter bots. It was really fun. But then, they announced the release date, the game was NOT ready for the release even in early access. But FJ decided to go anyway, as you can see it was catastrophic, and we, rc2 players were telling fj to continue working on it, but then, 3 months after the catastrophe, rc2rb happened. Many RC2 players lost faith in fj after that, if i learned anything, it was that FJ has little patience, that they are too stubborn, and that Techblox could've worked out better than rc2, even combat isn't that fun compared to racing. And I'm pretty sure if it wasn't made by FJ it would've been less harshly received.

Some additional context: The game first come out as sort of demo build in early autum of 2022 as simply the build mode without any multiplayer, available on their website for download. The game at that stage was basically a stripped down version of their earlier project, techblox, with a new (old) robocraft makeover and some RC elements like the guns. As a standalone project it was *very* interesting as the potential for what you could make, both for fun and in the context of taking your bot into battle against others in the future. Custom turrets (the only way to have a turret at the time) and joints and logic in general allowed you to make things that were never possible in the original RC. Since it was mainly a demo everyone accepted the flaws it had for the most part and tried to give feedback in the discord server they had set up for it. The game felt like something that could become a interesting sequel, something that takes the formula from the old and expands on it. Time went on, new parts were added (quite slowly) and then came the first closed multiplayer tests. Seeing as you would mostly see the same familiar faces you saw in the discord when playing, it was quite enjoyable. But even at this ealy stage some of the flaws of the system started to show up. The first mode was a battle arena type gamemode, different from the one we have (had) now, but already you could tell that the gamemodes they had in mind were not really suited to the type of gameplay that would rise from the new build system. At that point begame the goose chace to try to modify the maps and gameplay to catch up with what that precious potential could bring. They would ask for feedback, gather it, and try to improve the gamemode in a way that made sense to them, but it always felt they were always a bit off, it didn't really click with what the game encouraged at times. When the tests were made more public we had a gamemode that worked, for the most part, but felt limiting in what type of builds could shine, which was seen as frustrating to some. These types would gradually change with every modification that happened to the gamemode and every new part that was added (worst example of which being antigravs imo), but the core problems remained. They were just being handles mostly with bandaid fixes, apart from the few times the maps were reworked. With the test being public some kind of 'onboarding' feature was needed, despite the requests for one being there from day one, so they added a quick tutorial (like the one you see in the video) that basically just explained what things did as you unlocked them and nothing more. It could have been the start of a more robust progression, but it was just a bandaid fix that stuck until the end, made to try to please the new people coming in from the steam playtests and such that were complaining about it. After more than a year of new players coming in but not really sticking around for the most part, the news came that the game was gonna be release on early access on steam, and everyone pretty much agreed that it was WAY to early for this. The UI and features we had were lacking even for the people that were playtesting the game at the time but could be excused as the game being still in very early development, but a steam croud would have surely ripped the game to shreds with how obtuse and unintuitive it was to access, build, battle, etc... Not to mention the death-by-a-thousand-cuts from the gameplay balance a new player and a player who has played a lot would experience, but that could be considered a issue all the way back from the start of public tests. Nevertheless, despite what the community said the game released anyway without delay. From what could be gathered there may have been some external forces pushing FJ to release so early, in the discussion it always sounded like the date was a deadline of sorts. In any case, wouldn't you know it, the game immediately started getting review bombed. New people were joining, sure, but the reaction was quite bad. A good chunk of the reviews were just "this is not the 201x version of robocraft i liked, boo" which wouldn't have really given the game a shot anyway, but a lot were, fairly, dumping on the game for being quite bad in general. All these new tools and toys but you didn't really know how/why to use them and there wasn't really much to do with them anyway thanks to the limiting gamemode/experience. Granted, robocraft 1 also released on steam quite early and without much to begin with, and for the time that might have been acceptable, but the standards for a new game release today a quite different. The game was never really given a fighiting chance and was just thrown out while still being half baked. If there's one thing that was clear from very early on is that Freejam didn't really have the resources or time to handle a project of this magnitude. They reacted too slow to most problems that arose and took quite a while to deal with how dynamic the game was. In the end they tried to control the fire a bit and keep working on what they were developing, as the few player spikes that came from the release became flatter and flatter. After the holiday break we got a little tease for tanktracks and other stuff that would be coming, but eventually the decition to restart the game was made internally and made public a bit after. And here we are now :) Hi Space, i appreciate hearing an outside prospective on this, glad to see you're still around. Hope all goes well on your end.

The devs do good work, its just the game is pretty complicated and hard to pick up. Rc1 you could build and understand in 5 minutes how to build a functional bot. I dont think rc2 released, it was never given a chance to live. Thats the thing with RC, if its not an immediate success they give up. Its not a bad strategy to see what sticks though. Most games require years to get a good playerbase going. Everything they make lives in RC1s shadow, its hard to top that.

Thats messed up. When i was in primary school (2012-2014) robocraft was amazing. It was by far my fav game to play. They were improving the game and i think that for a decent amount of time they were going in the right direction. Of course sometimes they messed something up. For example there was a time when they created new mechanic of paying to repair your vehicle after game. It wouldnt be so bad if cost of repair wasnt bigger than money made in that game. That was a disaster, it was the first time i stopped playing this game, because it was simply unplayable. Later there was a time where you could upload your creations for other people to buy in shop, and there were megabots (tier tx). Imo that was the best time to play this game. Later it was just the further, the worse. One of the worst changes was to make vehicle drive in direction your looking at, it was horibble because you could not shoot to the side while driving without turning there.
@ExistentialWolfe
@ExistentialWolfe 7 ай бұрын
Actually the turning thing was just a setting. Unfortunatly it defaulted to the new setting but you could change it back. The party and friend mechanics never got improved though. My biggest complaint is that how you built your bot used to matter a lot in determining how tanky it was. now you can just stick a gun on a square frame and call it a day.

Robocraft 2 is missing two things that made robocraft robo craft. 1 the utter ease and simplicity of robot building In an understandable grid format. 2. (And stay with me on this) The healing aspect of the game. Healing from a tiny part of your vehicle to a massive mech or tank ready for action was one of and probably is the coolest things in robocraft. It's like a self healing transformer Even seeing your out of control aircraft regain stability was satisfying. Hell a massive decision was whether or not to engage and help objective or disengage and wait 10 seconds to get your parts and weapons back. And that has been replaced by the decision to stay in an inoperable vehicle or kill yourself and drive all the way back to the objective. And even making the choice to sacrifice one of your abilities in order to heal your team was a massive decision as well and seeing your teammate come back from nothing was also super rewarding

I used to play the game when it came out and it was SO MUCH FUN. But when I left for a while I returned to find the game plagued with micro transactions, loot boxes, and... pre built vehicles? Yah ngl the pre built vehicles really was the nail in the coffin for me. Kinda defeated the purpose of being a good builder. Why bother building something cool when you can grab your credit card and just buy something someone else built.

Robocraft 2 has unnecessarily complicated building. Building in Robocraft 2 was simply not fun and felt like a chore. The additional building features are cool in concept, but they way they’ve been implemented were just flat out bad. Not to mention the horrible physics.

Freejam started messing up RC1 8 years ago, many invested/fan players and content creators started leaving the game then. When devs think they know better than the community? Many would have paid for the game, or continue support it by buying certain "packages" of special builds, before their changes (not easily found as suggestions). I have 700 hours in RC1, 7 years since played it. Fun as long as it lasted, used around 20$ on it.

Supposedly they are remaking RC2...again. FJs biggest issue is they do not in fact have real coders. RC 1 was written with a 3d party scriptor and RC 2 was written with UE5 blueprints. For small scale projects these are fine, for something much larger and complex it leads to a situation where the whole game is held together by a ball of duck tape and twine and makes development and bug fixing almost impossible.

In Robocraft 1 in 2017, on my first day without watching any tutorials, I threw together a few hoverpads, built a cool shape for my chassis, slapped on 3 plasma launchers and a healing beam and went into battle. That first bot I built in 5 minutes became my main bot, and as I ran into stronger opponents I kept iterating on the design to create a truly dangerous fast hover assassin flanker, sneaking up on unaware enemies and burning them down while strafing circles around them. All this creation and development felt completely simple and natural, and I felt like my bot was my own. I eventually dropped the game when they changed the combat mechanics. When I booted up Robocraft 2, I felt completely lost. The building wasn't simple or fun, and the game basically railroaded me into just making a... car with a gun on the roof. If I wanted a car with a single gun on the roof, I'd go play fucking Crossout. I felt like my options are extremely limited, and I wasn't having fun, so I just dropped it again.

In your words, the Community speaks louder with action than words. The only thing for Robocraft "II" I thought was cool was leaving the vehicle. However, that's about it. It should though be used as an option for different ideas, but also could be used to capture other people's vehicles. The factory is one thing but the idea of taking someone else's design, and bringing it back to your base would be cool as heck.

You know, every building/combat game I've played just seems to be cursed to die from developer incompetence. They are so worried about what a few normie whiners say that they end up kicking out their primary player base, which is a bunch of autists that need a fix. Either that, or the developer themselves is the normie who keeps changing the game so they alone can win... A Minecraft-like airships game literally disappeared from the internet, because the developer banned an opposing faction's leader so that they couldn't restock their base supplies and their faction would disappear. After the backlash from that, they literally copyright took down EVERYTHING, so it's like the game never existed.

I don't know much about game development but sure as shit it couldn't be that horrible just to look back or listen to your fans and say "I think we made a horrible mistake." and just revert the changes back to 2014 instead of doing a "Blizzard move" and make a whole other game. How is the barrier to entry such a big deal? I don't understand it, every game I played that had that problem...I mastered, and that was always 70% of the fun. Do ppl don't like to learn and excel trough discoveries and the journey to learn stuff.... I really never get it. Maybe I am just arrogant, but you didn't showcase bots made without talent, the best of the best, the masterworks of rc1, those were the bots we all wanted to make... not some intuitively designed, easy to make, simple and obvious dank bots. NO! The exact bots that ppl who like the game being convoluted and complex to navigate are the ones you idolize, yet you blame when the game makes room for them. I find that hard to process. What if we just all took a chill pill and accepted the fact that the game is still being built and accept it for what it is. What if we just took our time to learn and do our part instead of asking the devs to dumb down the game. Can't we just be bigger mans then we were 10 years ago and acknowledge that the community made resources are maybe not that bad, that it can be interesting too to be part of the process in such a way. Why does every game have to be mainstream, easy to use and simple to understand, some of us just wanted to play a whole new game. Some just want to beat up the flaws of Freejam and RC1 some more for their mistakes. Thanks, you ruined it. Now we will never see what Freejam had intended to make from the freedom that they had earned from starting a whole new game. We will just get a RC1 with weird crap around it. Just the way you like it.

Not understanding how to play a game's sequel is an issue. Imagine Minecraft 2 releases as early access and now you can no longer place block by block, but place objects in chunks with 3 clicks. Removing Creative mode and the ability to make your own server because it would be worked on later. The fanbase would go crazy as well. Robocraft wasn't built on that level of complexity and while some games can pull it off, they usually keep the core mechanics the same while adding the next level of complexity alongside it. It was also a mistake to go early access for a sequel as it makes all of us easily judge a more complete Robocraft vs an incomplete Robocraft 2 game. It certainly isn't fair, but that's also how everyone views a sequel which is to be better than the original. If they wanted, they could have continue TechBlox because that's where they had finalized the new build system, but they canceled that game.

@@SpaceKryptonite Mistakes did occur, those are out of our control. For what it's worth, I respect your opinion, but I'm still passionate about mine. What shocks me the most is the complete 180 that it took, from a game I was hoping to play when it got finished to a complete unambitious disappointment for everyone involved. Safe to say, I won't be playing anything Freejam makes anymore. Standards must be upheld, we can agree on that. This was a spineless ppl pleasing sellout. An unprofessional, unplanned knee-jerk reaction to gamble everything they and the discord community had built just to please ppl that didn't care about the game that much. And that, to me, is unforgivable. If I worked at Freejam I'd quit. That's their problem. My problem is when ppl attempts to paint it like It's because the game was not RC1 with fresh paint and that Freejam didn't listen to their community, because, in my opinion they did listen, just not the ones that gave a crap enough to see RC2 to the end with them. They agreed to change it to what steam wanted, and everyone gave up on it. Even the ppl who asked for these changes. Was it worth it? Now to see you beat on this dead horse that you didn't even commit a single hour to until drama was marketable, with the complete understanding of someone who did just that, I might add, I find distasteful... Maybe you are right... maybe they should have just made it for that non-existent new player base of new arrivals who play streamline games, but, that sounds impossible to me. I just feel like whatever they would have made just wasn't what ppl wanted, and it would have turned out exactly the same. I was there when it looked like it would become great, I played it with full lobbies and with minimal wait times, the things ppl created amazed me for it to turn to a pile of ridiculous cubes in our hands and Freejam just put on a clown costume to keep themselves out of bankruptcy with the complete elegance of a 3 years old. That's my problem. It's insulting. We had everything we wanted until the game got launched on steam. Steam didn't even give it a chance, just had hatred for RC1 and decided that was the place to unload it. I feel like I got robbed out of this dream game that I wanted. If I took it this hard, can you imagine how Freejam took it, each comment a weight that would chip their spirit, enthusiasm and passion until they just said, fine RC15 guys!!! They were not perfect, but now their dream game is dead and no one is happy. I understand that you are past it, I am not. Thanks for the reply, tho, that was cool of you, I used to watch your videos constantly way back. Cheers to the past.

If they do, it'll fail. Robocraft 1 veterans who liked the game back in 2014-15 don't like it being easy. They don't want the CRF, they think damage routing is the best thing since sliced bread, and so on. And well, if they don't listen to the Robocraft 1 vets, then they'll keep review bombing the game anyway, so it won't take off.

@@-lijosu- Is the review bombing or is that just a cope? Theres a reason that robocraft 1's playercount dropped from around 20k in 2014-2015 to basically nothing. The devs made decisions that dedicated players thought were insanely bad. Instead of taking their great base game design, adding content overtime and building up their playercount, freejam just removed core game aspects that people liked and replaced it with pay to win and lootboxes.
@-lijosu-
@-lijosu- 6 ай бұрын
@@douglastakle8242 You're talking about backlash towards RC1 in 2016. RC2 was a game first publicly available in late 2022 (6+ years later) which did not feature lootboxes, had no pay to win elements (and I mean, absolutely none. It didn't even get the chance to end up with any paid cosmetics that were bugged into being busted), and didn't even have the same building system to start as a benchmark to compare previous versions of RC1 to. If people were reviewing the game based on their response to 2016 (many were), then yes. That is in fact review bombing and that should not be controversial.
