1:17:37 ... a very fitting example of the culture of the relationship between government and 'big four' firms (such as PwC in this case). Government outsources its rational thinking to 'consulting' firms with the mindset of a foregone conclusion. And the 'consulting' firm collects the taxpayer funds for 'work' it does. The 'work' itself (in this case) is not actually necessary except that government ministers can obfuscate any future responsibility if something goes 'wrong'. How fitting that this example of obfuscation is aired given the PwC scandal in the media at present.

I had a stomach bleed that almost killed me - five days in intensive care. We lived in hell for over four years, and we had to prove the unprovable to a Liberal party-appointed commissioner who had never heard a case before and a Centrelink Lawyer who kept demanding he ‘MUST’ find against us. We live in a rental, have been told we are about to be evicted, and have nowhere to go. I’ll meet Scomo and Roberts in hell - of that I’m certain.

@listohan Жыл бұрын
Poor Hank? Hank is a further example of what has been shown to be the twisted ethics of APS upper reaches: job retention trumps everything. Hank had been in the department since he was in short pants and knew the arithmetic was giving the wrong answers. He had been promoted to the position of media influencer, he had been well paid for years and near retirement where he would still be well paid. Given his public profile, Hank could have threatened to blow the scandal sky-high. Journalists dealt with him and would beat a path to his door. Instead, he went back to the job of the official spin doctor. Shame.
@billw2126 Жыл бұрын
@@listohan it is not just 'job retention' it is a matter of hanging onto your livelihood, your home, your ability to provide for your children. Richard, if you had to choose between keeping your livelihood to provide for your family, versus standing up to something at work that was vigorously supported by your senior leaders, what would you do? I was in this situation once and it was a very distressing experience, and i am not ashamed to confess that i chose the coward's path. I suspect Hank made a similar decision.
@listohan Жыл бұрын
@@billw2126 Are you really saying that? Yes, and I have. If fear of job loss is the overriding attitude, say so and throw the rule book away and let anarchy prevail. Ignore BRS's shortcomings. We have rules for a reason. I hope your view isn't the prevailing one in the APS, but it seems to be the case when people are prepared to go into the witness box and make fools of themselves and for others to defend "my job over all other considerations". We expect more of our defence personnel but not Canberra paper shufflers. A major root and branch cleanout is indicated. As for Hank, wasn't he near retirement? If he had acted principally other opportunities would have been available. Who else would employ him now given he cannot plead ignorance? I can't wait for her Honour's findings.
@billw2126 Жыл бұрын
@@listohan mate, you missed my point. When it becomes a stark choice between holding onto employment and providing for my family, versus a doomed fight against a ministerial policy, most of us ordinary mortals choose the former. At best we try to find small ways that we can soften the blow on clients but it is terrible to go to work and implement a policy which you feel is antithetical to your departmental policies and your personal goal of treating clients the way you would like to be treated. Look at what is happening with Richard Boyle and his disclosure of aggressive debt collection processes in the ATO. Would you go through what he is facing? Has his immensely brave action changed anything? Have you worked in the APS? If your experience of standing up to an immoral policy is anything like mine then I hope you can at least acknowledge that taking the moral path is fraught with significant threats and a tremendous personal cost on the security and health of the few individuals that take it. Hopefully this Royal Commission will lead to the introduction of organisational changes across the APS which do not put public servants in such difficult positions.
@listohan Жыл бұрын
@@billw2126 So Hank was justified in continuing to present the flawed case to the public night after night? Hank was hardly at the beginning of his career. He could have gone out in a blaze of glory and held his head high. As it is... Members of the defence forces are expected to put more than their jobs and future mental health on the line to get the reward of a medal. There is a yawning gap between what is expected of them and what is delivered by some public servants. Especially the senior ones, the ones receiving the bigger inducements to stay quiet while knowing the most. As to your question of whether I have been a public servant, I could not abide or survive in that sort of company. Has Katherine Campbell shown any hint that she has reflected on her stewardship? What do you say about the ridiculous evidence given by the senior people who gave evidence? The ones with the APS medals and AOs for goodness sake. Are you saying we should trash the Code or should we keep it and ignore it? I hope NACC does a number on the public service as the cosy world that operates at the top is being exposed.
