It isnt just a unified NHS record that we dont have. Nothing is linked up in the UK. Local government. Utilities. Policing. Taxation. Welfare. Banking. Every government department and business has to reinvent the wheel and come up with a website, a password for you to forget, and a storage system for their data. You dont have 1 identity. You have hundreds to manage. Think about moving house. Everytime you move you have to update a lot of organisations. They all have different systems and processes. Change of address fraud is a massive issue, and by having so many systems for it, we create multiple vectors for attack. We could have one single unified ID that attaches our personal details to every account. A single place with high levels of security where you change your address and it cascades out across all your accounts. But that terrifies a lot of people. They like that they can drop a company and run. They like the idea they can become unfindable. They dont want the government associating them with the person of the same name and dob in the next town over who just skipped town. There are also a lot of religious people who object. ID cards were "the mark of the beast" to some. All told there are a lot of people working hard to prevent any kind of modern top down unified system. The chaos suits them.
@MaatBlack-t7c28 күн бұрын
@MadnessQuotient I agree with everything you wrote. You're right about none of the departments being linked. Their left hand doesn't know what the right one is doing and one needs way too many passwords and codes to access the most simple of things. I agree that it terrifies people too. However, for me, the worry is more about the overall security and safety of a unified system. When, not if, hackers get through that system we're all at risk, all at once. The chaos, albeit annoying, can also be a shield from bad actors.

Any decision in Canada to abolish the monarchy would require a) a unanimous vote in the House of Commons and the Canadian Senate (not going to happen), unanimous votes in _all ten_ provincial legislatures (again, not gonna happen) and would also open the opportunity for certain provinces (Quebec and, more recently, Alberta) to make demands of the other provinces and the feds to change the constitution (including the Charter of Rights and Freedoms) in other ways. What is maybe more embarrassing is a country that had a very, very close referendum on becoming a republic just 25 years ago, apparently has only one elected member willing to say a single mean thing to the King -- knowing that many people in the Labor party in Australia are republicans, but are more interested in power and money so will throw their morals and beliefs aside is an overwhelming feeling in this country. Greek people drink and smoke way more, yet live longer. Most of these things are way more complicated than any of these studies will ever give credit to, you cannot point out a single factor, like smoking or drinking, because any time you try there's ample counter-examples to prove you wrong. When it comes to Chinese people living longer, there's actually a really interesting theory to that. Chinese is a language that doesn't have the same tense system as English, like, we would say "I went to the store" (past) "I'm going to the store" (present) or "I will go to the store" (future) In Chinese it's just "I go store" or "I go to store" (a common mistake Mandarin speakers make when learning English) the tense is implied through context, it doesn't matter whether you went already, you're going now, or you will go later, you say all 3 the same way. An interesting consequence of this, is that people who are raised speaking Chinese, are better at long term planning when it comes to stuff like health and money, because "I will do this fun thing now and face negative consequences later" becomes "I do fun thing, bad thing happens" - because the concept of tense doesn't exist, things that we waive away as far off consequences "Who cares if i get cancer in 30 years" seem way more important, getting cancer is getting cancer whether you do it in the past future or present. Anyway, all that blabber to say, the language we speak influences our thinking, which influences our behavior, and a lot of "genetic" quirks we attribute to specific groups of people are actually a language thing instead.

I think there are two different things happening here, there is the republican movement in Australia and the indigenous Australians who want a treaty, they are not the same thing, and I have watched LBC cover this, without realising this, I think your journalists need to do more research as an indigenous treaty is not a republic, they have two different aims. The woman who yelled the stuff out, is asking for a treaty for the indigenous people of Australia, so it seems the latter is being used by some of the UK press to focus on a republic. Perhaps we should switch it off and on again and see if that fixes it.

James is lucky we dont live 4/500 years ago talking about the royals in the way he does! It wouldn't have ended well for him & his anti-monarchy rhetoric

Do you think that's a **defense** of the monarchy?!

I think we take the monarchy for granted. They add to our national identity, even in the back of our minds. They're a constant. Everything else comes and goes. I suppose we can keep dismantling the country bit by bit but I'm not sure what will replace this key figurehead? Our financial services? The government? Fun!

What a pile of codswallop. They make 1.1 billion and have the nerve to get 57 million pounds in an austerity budget. Past disgusting.

@TessTearoe-zp5xv I agree with that, I wasn't commenting on their finances.

If you want to see our national identity, watch the opening ceremony of the Olympics back in 2012. I can only think the queen was crow-barred into it to appease the establishment, it was otherwise a worthless stunt.

@JamesBarry. It may seem to be pointless nowadays - but my philosophy is : “Don’t throw anything away - you might need it later. You can’t know When - and you can always adapt things. The British have a genius for that.
