Have you thought of using ROS for the robotic arm? It is what I am using for an autonomous boat at the moment. I'm using a ZED stereocamera and writing the computer vision code myself because the identification models don't quite work for what I'm trying to identify(buoys)

Really great stuff! I’m curious how the robot arm is going to turn out. I’m into creating mechatronic devices, too. (especially in the field of production and manufacturing) I solved the issues with the annoying sound of a 3d printer (Prusa Mk3s) by building an noise reducing enclosure. So far there is just one video.. but in case.. there is lot of stuff to show ;) You might like it :)

The Nvida has launch state of the art module however there is no info about ROS2, which should be preinstalled as a default robot system. There is not reason to develop still SW for ROS. Are you going to use another board with microcontrollers for sensors and motors control? The OS will take time for image processing and this could interfere in time critical tasks. Or the NVidia board has some extra tricks for that too?

Yes. But it is compatible with jetson nano. So you can do almost all this on jetson nano (but of course, jetson nano is slower).

I also have a question. I have a cnc machine shop that I operate by myself. Is it possible for a robot arm on wheels to navigate my workshop, Identify fixtures, pick them up, drive to the machine, insert the fixture, and press start? This is something I wanted to do for the past couple of years, but I don't know if image recognition and AI are good enough for this. It's a simple task, but can be dangerous in many ways.

This should be possible, you can always put a bunch or QR codes on the fixtures to aid with the recognition and make it much more reliable

@@TheRealFrankWizza look for mecanum wheels for the robot base, as for loading the CNC machines, I'd use the vision system to get the robot close, but then dock it against the CNC machines using something like those pneumatic pallet fixtures so that the actual loading and unloading doesn't have to rely on the vision system.

Tracks help to avoid danger by limiting motion. If you are old enough, you may recall that trolley tracks would run in the middle of streets in larger towns and there weren't that many disasters. Sharing the right-of-way with moving trolleys was part of a young person's early education. A router and a plan could turn your plain workshop into a place of complex trackness. You could use 20mm X 20mm aluminum beams as the tracks.

@@vvwording4844 I have considered tracks, but they take up limited and expensive (in my part of the country) floor space. I don't own the building, and would rather not dig into the floor for recessed tracks. I would rather this thing be on wheels and have it's own knowledge obstacle avoidance. The more I look into it, the more I think this is a reasonable thing to do these days. I just ordered a jetson nano and the intel realsense camera. I am going to mess around it with it. I know nothing about neural networks. Maybe try something like that little car from nvidia that does obstacle avoidance.
