After struggling to hire enough staff, some restaurants in New York have started using robots to serve their customers. The feline-themed mechanical waiters are made in China and not exactly cheap, but the US$16,000 BellaBot can reliably deliver food orders from the kitchen to the table. WowRobee, the company that helps distribute the robots, said many restaurants see automatons as an answer to hiring problems sparked by the Covid-19 pandemic.

I’m currently working as a Maître d’ for a 5 stars hotel, after 11 years working my way up into the industry. First as busboy, then food runner, then bartender, then server and finally managing a team. As long as human interaction is preserved and these robots only purpose is to run things from the kitchen to the floor, I say KUDOS!

The idea of “Robots and machines taking jobs” does sound unfortunate but if you ask me, it’s an improvement and people need to evaluate how to deal with these changes, not everyone really want to work as a waiter and busperson. From my experience, there used to be a Black Angus in our town. Bad services almost all the time but we keep going there because of the coupons and my parents are too shy about eating at other restaurants, especially other than Asian food.
