In Hungary, the first robot-assisted surgical procedures began in January 2022 with the robot named Da Vinci. The developers justified the choice of the name by noting that the Renaissance polymath, Leonardo Da Vinci, not only conducted anatomical studies through dissection far beyond his time but also created the precursor to robots worldwide: an armor structure capable of moving its arms and legs independently.
Since then, the world has made significant progress, and the Da Vinci robotic surgeon currently in use has learned a lot. For example, surgeries performed by it result in less blood loss, significantly reduce postoperative pain, decrease the likelihood of infection, reduce the time patients spend in the hospital, and lead to much faster recovery.
The Da Vinci is now used in various fields of medicine, including cardiovascular surgery, gynecology, as well as neurosurgical, orthopedic, and urological interventions.
There is much to talk about as it has revolutionized healthcare! For this, we invited an excellent biomedical engineer, Tamás Haidegger, who is not only a passionate "robotologist" but, despite being 41 years old, is already a university professor and, not least, the director of the Research and Innovation Center at Óbuda University.
