Baba Jaga is most probably bad christian legend of Mokosz - slavic goddess Mother Earth, wife of Perun. This is indicated e.g. by the scene in which a tiny plant - an oak tree - grows from a wooden support, which Jaga then plants.

Yaga was a witch, a forest protector and the guardian of the metamorphosis of a child into an adult. As this required the" death" of one stage and the " birth" of the other, Grimm brothers used it and created a tale of Baba Yaga who is ugly, kidnapps children, fatten them up and eat them. Therefore in this interpretation there is a lot connections of Yaga trying to take back civilisation and nature to flourish, oak tree she is planting is the sacred tree of Perun, slavic god of thunder, therefore Boruta was so worried in the end. Noone messed with Perun. Slavic mythology revolved around nature, sacred trees and forests, and the respect for nature and connection of man and nature.
@jackflash147 Жыл бұрын
That is correct , but i think, that the Grimm brothers didn't create a concept of Jaga as a ugly child/man eating demon, it was a Church, wen Christianity arrived to slavic lands , Church was trying to eradicate all pogan beliefs system and customs. One of the ways, was degrading pagan deities to the rank of the demons an portrate them as something unclean/unholy. Grimm brothers adapted the Christian version of Jaga and add few things from themselves.
@elzbietabetlej4085 Жыл бұрын
@@jackflash147 you are right about the Church, however Grimm brothers made it famous again. With those few people remembering the origins , the big villain image was spread around the world. Like the very term witch. Originally in Polish lands term witch was addressed to very wise women who got knowledge about herbs and healing. With coming of Christianity witches were portrayed as those serving devil ( they were originally pagans like the whole Slavic societies, duh) . Then those who were Christians but got knowledge, wisdom and knew how to think independently were hunted down and burnt at stake ( inquisition) . Thankfully in Poland Inquisition was quickly abolished as Polish Kingdom established freedom and equality of beliefs( in XVc. were last cases of inquisition judgements).

@Rob Reacts There is a story behind this, explained in the audiobook (also published by Allegro) "Interview with Boruta". When Christianity came to Poland, all Slavic gods and demons had to be removed from power in favor of a new religion and imprisoned in hell. Boruta being one of them (lesser god of forests) agreed to betray his kind and became a devil, director of Polish Hell (hell seems to be divided into regions :)). He tricked the Slavic gods and demons into imprisoning them and is supposed to guard them. Yaga and Basilisk are just a few examples. When Twardowski hacked into their servers, he also destroyed locks and security systems, which is why Basilisk and Jaga escaped. Devils solve the problem, and Boruta thought that by leaving Jaga free, he could bring chaos to the world and become its ruler. However, there is one problem that Rokita mentions - there is a possibility that Yaga will free Perun and of course he will not be friendly to them, because they kept him in prison for so long and removed him from power. WHO IS Perun and why they are so afraid of him, check on Wiki :)

There is no point to make a Perun = piorun, the God of lightning the most dangerous Slavic god. He was believed to give males masculine strenght and valour. Even the place on the ground hit by lightning was thought as a healing. I suppose the most evil and vicious god was alias Velos, Velinas, Veles, Volos. It was believed that having three faces, he ruled three kingdoms - heaven, earth and hell. Sometimes, he appeared among people taking a form of elderly man asking for water to drink. Anyone who did not give him water would face misfortunes for the rest of its life.

In Poland, Baba Yaga's house, standing on a chicken leg, was supposed to scare away the kids who were playing around the "Koźlak" windmills. They were built on a hill of wood. Such a mill was characterized by the fact that it stood on a stake and its foot was quadrangular (toed foot of a hen). Thanks to this construction, it could be set to the wind. The propellers (wings) of the windmill were very long and ended about a meter above the ground. Kids running by the working windmill were often (unfortunately) hit by the spinning propeller. Such fun ended tragically. That is why "Koźlak" was presented as Baba Yaga's house standing on a bald glade on a chicken leg. Regards Rob I like your videos. WItcher in late Slavic traditions was someone else though. Also the word 'wizard' relates to 'wise' and confusing wisdom with knowledge is apparently a thing we take from Gernan-speaking people in droves. It's interesting to note how Karl Zoltan Brust - Hungarian-American author writing under pen name of Steven Brust names his main protagonist - Vlad Taltos - 'male with' (not wizard or witcher) despite his ability to operate two types of magic powers. Per certain obscure interview he has done so in deference to none other than Sapkowski which he is friends with.

Yeah basicaly Baba Jaga(old and ugly) was an archetype for witches in mainstream. Its not like "they dont believe in you, they dont like nature, they arent on your side". Its not aboud sides. Often in fantasy there is a trope that mystical being gain power from believes or fear of mortal people. Gods dying when they are forgoten etc. Good example of this is in anime Noragami. The gods that are currently popular are rich, powerful, have great temples and lots of servants. But the main character, who is an old god of war (and no one cares about war in 21st Japan) is like a joke. Homeless, in an old tracksuit, he doesn't even have a shrine, no one knows his name, and he has trouble keeping one servant. Fun thing that is could be hard to catch for someone who isnt native in Polish. That little girl sound so stiff and fake... like she recite some XVst poem. Nobody talk like that. And that becose... that was set up for Jaga. Becose she didnt aclimatise yet. For her she sound normal. But for polish viewer that was very weird interaction. In some random open space musem some random child pop up and start to speak like a bard.

She also is named Swallow. 16:11 "This is soo good!" The feature film under the working title 'Twardowsky 3.14' that's been planned for the release in 2020 or 2021 never came out. What's more, unfortunately Piotr Machalica passed away in 2020. Personally I can't imagine any other actor replacing him as Rokita, the deputy devil :(

Since you know Baba Yaga now, I reccomend Marcin Patrzalek - a polish guitarist's piece of the exact title Baba Yaga. This man is insane with his guitar, and this particular song of his fits neatly into slavic folklore presented in this movie

9:09 Oryginalnie śpiewał to Stan Borys "Jaskółka uwięziona". Jeśli usłyszysz to w odpowiednim momencie życia, poczujesz się (w sensie pozytywnym), jakbyś dostał kowadłem w twarz.

Sadly, they run of the money for Twardovsky 3.14. And then the coordinator of the series (Bagiński, who was even nominated for Academy Award for his debut animation) and his Platige Image (kind of Polish ILM) started to work on Witcher for Netflix...

All the songs used in "Legends" are covers of Polish hits even from the 70s, such as "Swallow trapped" by Stan Borys or "Clockmaster of Light" by Tadeusz Woźniak. Allegro's "Polish Legends" are only an artistic vision of the authors, not their literal visualization.

Oh! There is also and audiobook "Wywiad z Borutą" (Interview with Boruta) - it gives the origins of Boruta and other characters from Allegro Universe. Famous polish actress Krystyna Janda is playing the role of the Interviewer :)

6:33 "what am I, a guardian angel?" and the face that Rokita (Boruta's assistant) made. There is a hidden Easter egg in this, in the music video from this universe for the cover of the song "Kocham wolność" you can see Rokita without a shirt and he has glowing scars from clipped angel wings, from which you can guess that he was previously a guardian angel 18:40 It's on tape because after the action with Twardowski, Rokita got angry and destroyed the place. They glued it as temporarily as possible... Ps: it's Polish hell, the budget is limited, it's not USA or German hell...

Well, it is not that they ran out of money. There was even a plan for full-length movie. But in the meantime the owner of Allegro company had changed and the new owner closed the project.

After this episode, they wanted to do full movie about Twardowsky. But in meantime the owners of Allegro changed and the new ones got different opinion about creating such things. After all - Allegro is not a movie studio - they are just a shop. Everybody, including crew from Polish Legends hoping to come back to me it one day - but it is now not longer provable.

In Slavic folklore, witches are neutral, you just shouldn't upset them. Witch ( wiedźma) in Polish translation is "woman who knows". We have two terms "wiedźma" ( Baba Jaga) and " czarownica" a woman of witchcraft (they are evil) probably corresponds more to an English-speaking witch ;) Slavic witches are usually beautiful, but they can be ugly depending on the circumstances, their most important trait is that they are smart. Don't upset the Slavic girl if you don't want to see the look like Jaga has xD

Baba Yaga is Boruta's sister. Boruta is a low-class devil who walked through the forests like a faun from the novel "The Chronicles of Narnia. Only the Polish Boruta was hungry for power. It was he who turned people against the Slavic gods. The old Slavic rulers imprisoned their gods in the lower levels of hell. And Boruta became the guardian of hell. . This was the pact between people and the Christian heaven and Boruta. (I will add that in 996 Poland was baptized and became a Catholic country.) This is the prologue that Allegro presented as "Interview with Boruta" Boruta tells the journalist about the whole intrigue and betrayal committed by Boruta.

Yaga is common to slavic mythology, but mortar or churn is her transport in east slavic legends. On west she use broomstick. And her beauty... well... all women are witches and have their ways to look much better. ;) It's 21st century, she adopted to new culture of beauty and look-centrism. :D

Niezłe przygotowanie do oglądania filmu.
