Music is collaborative, especially with the crazy technology and techniques we have now. Like the 3 fingers thing is honestly not that advanced but it's just one of those things that people don't do on harp lol so when she sees it, it's awesome. Just like the muted strings thing he was doing. Who thinks to mute strings on a harp to play different intervals. Obviously she loves experimenting with different things on her instrument considering her awesome pedal layout so it seems right up her alley to learn these new techniques.

Harp is one of the few instruments that sound so good that beginners, practicing, actually sound, if not great, at least good. When I used to play I’d sit out on my deck to practice, until it started to get too cold. A month or so after I’d moved practice indoors I met my neighbor outside and she said she missed hearing me practice. I apologised and said I hoped I hadn’t disturbed her and she was like “oh no, it was lovely. I miss it” it was nice to hear as a beginner lol

most harpists are actually quite chill about it. its almost impossible to transport these things without slowly accumulating damage to the finish. so unless its very new chances are the new car feels actually last far shorter than on a guitar. Plus: its hard to keep the mental image of a fragile instrument after you have lugged these things through a few flights of stairs.

Rob showing Emily how to do the guitar and bass techniques, and her saying her teacher would hate them reminds me of the story of Harpo Marx- he apparently was entirely self-taught on harp, and as such managed to figure out entirely new ways of playing- to the point that, supposedly, later in life when he could afford harp lessons, his teachers didn't want to change his method of playing and instead incorporated a lot of HIS techniques into their repertoire.

There's a similar story about Ian Anderson, who was essentially self-taught on the flute yet played passionately and effectively. Many years after the early days of Jethro Tull, his daughter took flute lessons from a professional and then told her dad he'd been playing incorrectly for all those years. He set about learning correct technique at that point.

I think the important take away here is “do stuff that will make your harp teacher mad” lol. Once you’ve mastered the proper techniques it’s fine to break the rules. I feel like that’s particularly true with classical instruments. The classical world is very gate keepy but stepping outside of what’s considered proper can lead to some incredible results.

I don't see any harm in borrowing right hand guitar techniques for use on harp, except for noting that the two hands are almost interchangeable (not as much reach on the bass side for whichever shoulder the harp rests on) so you kinda have to learn each technique twice to really have it mastered. Just being able to do it with one hand would still be a massive upgrade from not doing it at all though. If guitars can borrow harp harmonics, then harps can borrow guitar plucking. It's only fair. That also means Emily is allowed to use a Miku pedal, doomharps are honorary guitars now.

Like if you see someone learning to play bass or guitar holding it at an angle that's going to screw up the wrists, you should say so. That's not telling them how to play, it's telling them how not to get hurt. If it's a pro who says "yeah I know, that's why I only do it for 40 seconds a night", that's when you make an exception. I legitimately got goosebumps and tears welled up in my eyes when she started playing with pedals. That was absolutely breathtaking. Rob's reaction pretty much sums it up. Emily has a new fan for sure!

I'm not a musician by any means, but I love these musical instrument adventures! Both Rob and whoever his guest is are always so excited just playing different ways and chitchatting and learning about each others instruments and techniques. So good.

Rob's thing about pinch harmonics is spot on. Those are definitely something that when you learn how to do them, your guitar playing knowledge levels up. I thought they were voodoo when I was learning guitar and then one day, squeal! And now I can pinch harmonic all day. Also, Emily is badass.

Okay, I know I'm late to the Party but I need to add this. Because after a long break from Rob, I watched this and I felt encapsulates perfectly why he (and his team) is one the most inspiring guitar youtubers out there. He always has a genuine interest in not only the featured artist but in the presented instruments. His curiosity is always mixed with respect for the artist and their instrument. He ALWAYS adds something to the instrument, be it applying techniques from other instruments or when he freestyles. You can always sense that his talent is not used to show off but fueled by his interest to create sound. There is a segment in this video that perfectly sums up his relationship to sound. It starts at about 11:18 where you can see that his body and mind is captured by the wall of sound that hits him and at 11:46 where he almost can't control the joy of this experience. I know this sounds completely over the top, but I had to get this out. This whole channel is such a gift. Thank you very much.

Harps make magic. My Mother sold my Grandmother's pedal harp. I was 6 years old and was devastated as I'd just started learning piano and also loved tinkering on the harp. I'm now 64 years old and it still pisses me off.

I smiled so much! My favorite channels came together; it was exactly what I expected, and it was both fun and exploratory. I don't think I've seen Rob so relaxed as when he was listening to Emily play with the pedalboard active. It seemed very therapeutic... Like our sponsor toda- Anywho, great sounds, great people, we're eating good in the neighborharp. Much love to all involved.

You know, I’ve never learnt so much about music as watching this channel, and just watching rob fuck about on different things. Also, this shit needs to be incorporated into some like, legit symphonic metal or something. Sometimes you feel like every song has ever been written, and then you see people doing this really creative stuff in their small niche somewhere and you kind of have to believe that we haven’t even scratched the surface. Not to mention all the potential variances with alternate tunings, like going back to Pythagorean tuning or other alternate divisions of music and you wonder what all beautiful things were missing out on because of how narrow we’ve interpreted sound to be pleasing and because everything borrows so much from what came before. Obviously there are still innovators, and I’m happy to get a glimpse into what’s possible.
