A lot of us got into organ because of the enormous number of possibilities they have, so seeing this stuff as a classical organist is pretty cool. Oh, absolutely no doubt the stops could be controlled with SysEx commands! If the organ console is that modern and implements MIDI, I'm sure they allowed for external control of the stops. You can essentially do that with the registration pistons under each keyboard already. It's how organists change "patches" so quickly. They set up the stops, then save them as a registration on one of the pistons. These consoles are amazing. They often have couplers between manuals (keyboards) so one manual can play pipe stops from another manual, or the pedals. It's super cool stuff. 😊

@@mumblbeebee6546 That whole organ console is just a giant midi controller..because it's just the sensible way to do things. all the stops and expression pedals are most likely CC commands the issue is the builder will be the only one with the real midi map of the instrument and what CC numbers are what stops and couplers. So when you record internally it just records a midi stream including the stops and swell controls With the documentation of the midi map people could compose for the organ directly.. Quick plug if you're interested in pipe organs there's some really good physics simulations as midi instruments and one of my favorites is aeolus.

They didn't have a rank of pipes for that sound, so he opened a midi stream to a sequencer and the output was played over the speaker system and augmented what he was playing with the regular pipes. The results were incredible, and it was still totally him, just with a sound he would not have otherwise had access to.

It's soo freaking awesome that John is so willing to share this amazing instrument with you. A lot of people would be hesitant to allow anyone to even touch the organ, let alone play with it in a new creative way. He's so knowledgeable about it and it's history, and it's super cool he is willing to share this amazing creation with the world and allowing you to try this. Edit: WOaaahhhhh, even MORE amazing of John!!!! The fact that the midi stuff wasn't connected or ever planned on being used, would have been a roadblock most people wouldn't have worked past. This is soooooo freaking awesome that he had the engineer/mechanic come in and wire things up the right way to make this happen. This is incredible. John is such a great guy. Big Thanks to John for having the passion and creative aspirations to see this through with Rob.

Odd that the manufacturer never thought that this was needed, even though installed. On a newer organ, so equipped, your organist could be Ill some Sunday. Drop in a tiny MIDI file and it would play some of the greatest pipe organists in the world. Someone would still have adjust some stops, though.

It is pretty common to have MIDI on pipe organs in the last 20 years or so. Usually they're set up so that if you record the MIDI data on that particular organ, it also records and plays back all your stop changes, swell pedal movements, and any other control inputs it might have. This is most useful when you're producing an audio recording of a performance.
@tfofurn4 жыл бұрын
@@kc9scott He mentioned the "IOTI" which seems like it would be this: www.integratedorgantech.com/product/1. I didn't see any documentation on a quick visit, but I would imagine there's a MIDI interface for stop changes, too.

stops are probably adjustable too. if organist can operate them all at once with his special buttons, then probably it is all computer - controlled already. the question is the interface, MIDI may or may not be possible to use.

In hindsight, isn't this a really amazing thing? The generational gap that gets bridged is understated. Not only that, you kinda have to notice that even with MIDI taking over the key playing, you still need to know how and when to adjust the octaves among a few other things. You might feel like this replaces the organ player when instead it expands the repertoire of one. Dynamic/congregational melodies still require an organist, passive use music can be offloaded to a computer in the same way you might use a tape/cd player. Even so, you still have to recompose parts of a piece for the organ given the complexity of options and I suppose length of the resonance that is generally not present in modern music.

In addition to that great statement, you have to bear in mind what is lost in this video. You literally cannot hear the surround sound of pipes in different sections and different parts of the the church playing. If you're somewhat musical, you can imagine it. But yes. That too is part of proper composition. The ranks. Which areas they come from. What specific sounds you want it to emulate. MIDI is another tool, an does a lot of automation. That's the idea. But it could allow a gifted player to focus more so on the composition and the other components. The way you play for an organ piece alone is different than for a choir. Sometimes. You're backing them up and making them sound great. Sometimes. There's special times for just the organ to shine. Sometimes you have to cook up something truly unique. MIDI simply opens more doors of possibilities. And there's simply thousands and thousands with this organ. End of the day, a human with key knowledge is still required. And there's moments that MIDI still isn't itself perfect for example. A musician needs to know the strength and weaknesses of his tools. I'd honestly would love to see more of this kind of stuff. This is unique. It's the first time I've seen something of this sort, and can only see it as enhancing the experience

As a former organ technician, most/all of the modern organ control systems that had midi modules available could control stop/registration changes as well as crescendo pedal/swell shades through the midi channels. Just as the organist is able to record/playback internally with all of those things prefectly replicated, if you know what signals to throw at it, it should work. Usually they have a "stock" midi manual that goes over recording and such which is given to the organist and one created specific to the organ (because organs are not all composed of the same stops) usually ends up kept inside the console which would have what channels/signals do what. That one is usually written in a way that you have to have a lot of midi/organ system knowledge to comprehend sufficiently. In addition to this giving the organist or excited musician the opportunity to use the midi to play or record, it also has the potential (in some systems) for the technicians to control the organ from somewhere besides the console using wireless and the midi controls. Useful for 1-person tunings or tonal regulation.

@@alexpopov3871 except that the tech specs for the organ actually do show it has online connectivity options for remote maintenance, diagnostics and play. And yeah, you can pretty much use any connector for any use as long as it has the amount of pins you need. There however is no point in having an oldschool and modern MIDI port AND then making some hybrid RJ45 based MIDI connector on top of that. Even without knowing the tech specs, it's obvious it's meant for network connectivity.

I think a big problem with Rain also was the (in comparison to the church's length relatively slow) speed of sound, cause it definitely ruined that neatly timed delay.
@klabrx Жыл бұрын
The solution might be to adjust (i.e. time align) the playback within the Midi file or rather the DAW accordingly. A similar thing is done with delay lines in huge venues all the time ... but on the other hand ... you'd have to define where in the building the sweet spot (acoustic point zero) is supposed to be.
