Because of Rob's selfishness, Maurice's shop went out of business, he got into serious debt, his wife and 3 kids all left him, and he is now homeless. This is all because Rob said he didn’t need a pick. 1 like = 1 prayer for Maurice 😢😢😢😂

Hey Rob! I just wanted to leave this little tidbit here, being an intermediate multi-instrumentalist like you, you give me influence to keep learning different instruments and explore different aspects of music. My drum teacher also has talked about you (he was in a band called Crepe with you in high school, which I found REALLY cool) and we both find you very inspiring and all around such a great dude. Don't ever stop exploring and teaching music on KZbin, you really make the music community a better place :)

I think something that people never really touch on is that putting your guitar (preferably acoustic) in to an open tuning and playing finger style creates some absolutely beautiful music. For anyone interested, try tuning your guitar to the following D F# A E A C# It will sound a lot deeper than usual but experiment with simple 2 finger chords and I’m sure you’ll find some really nice progressions
@plactoec1590
@plactoec1590 6 жыл бұрын
I'm newer to guitar what chords are you referring to? Like power chords?
@LordBete
@LordBete 6 жыл бұрын
Andrew Wilson Really my point was to try make up chords with one or two fingers in any position you can find that sounds nice. For example (keeping the string names the same despite the tuning) 7th Fret on the A string and 7th fret on the G string and play all the strings sounds quite nice. The whole open tuning thing lends itself to simpler chords as even just playing the strings open sounds nice. Try play around with the chord I mentioned above, moving it up and down the fretboard you can get a nice sound from that alone

That is *almost* the tuning Michael Hedges used on his amazing cover of Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower". He doubled the A on the top two strings instead of the C#. Oh, wait, he tuned th 4th string to C# instead of E. So it is an open DMaj7, without the 9. The song's probably on KZbin, but back in the day I learned it from a VHS tape I recorded of a PBS special. Good times.

One thing I have to say is that isn't the only way to fingerpick and it is far from the easiest. I learned fingerpicking back in 2008 ish from my dad who has been playing since he was in his early 20's back in 1970. His, (and my), method involves firmly anchoring your wrist on the bridge of the guitar and putting your pinky down on the pick guard to help hold your hand in position so your fingers are always above the same strings. (He learned flatpicking early on and that definitely influenced his technique. Tony Rice was one of his greatest inspirations. Ed Gerhard was his, and my, inspiration for fingerpicking.) The Thumb plays the Low E, A, and D strings, the Index plays the G, the Middle plays the B, and the Ring finger plays the High E. Using this method it is possible to play 90% of tabbed music you may find with a few exceptions where you have to bring in the Pinky for a chord roll. There is plenty of strength in your fingers to play loud and cleanly but it takes time to get your brain to understand what to do. My main issue with your method is how much longer it takes your brain to figure out where your fingers are in relation to the strings they are supposed to be hitting. Sure you'll get it eventually but it will take much longer imo. Each to their own of course. I will see if I can find some time to make a video submission and you can see, and critique, my technique. (*Hey* it RHYMES... lol) Take care and keep on creating great music :) Ben R4m-Z

Man, I gave up on guitar a year ago because I felt like I was going nowhere after 2 years of learning. Looking back I can only blame myself, I wish I would get back that passion for guitar and learning it, but I just kind of lost it. It started when I was in an orchestra for our school and during our performance, after 8months of learning nothing, the Maestro (or whatever you call the person the coordinates the orchestra) turned off the microphone of the guitars, 4 of us were their, just doing the same thing over and over again. Will never forgive him.

This is inspiring - I've occasionally wondered if I could "ditch the pick" with the guitar, partly as one of my big "guitar heroes", Mike Oldfield, plays his lead parts without one. Also, I've been playing a lot of ukulele recently, and I never use a pick with the uke, so I feel I've been learning fingerstyle by default! I wonder where this will lead...

Oh gosh, time to try to record some stuff. I've never done that before (lack of motivation, insecurity of my musical skills bc I'm not professional) but this is great. My guitar skills are good enough to learn that and create something. And I would love to have a nice guitar. My guitar & other instruments aren't that great so this would be amazing. I'm excited, nervous, but excited.
