I was also a juror here 30 years ago on a murder trial. Back then, as potential jurors, we all assembled on Monday morning in the cafeteria, and made small talk with each other. Famous cricketer Mike Gatting was among us. Then the slow process of jury selection then began. Names were called out by the dozen for each trial. The name "Mike Gatting" was called out, no answer. Then again, "Mike Gatting". Again, no answer. So I'm afraid I just couldn't stop myself, "He's out" I shouted. True story, but sadly not many got the joke.

Rob, as always, this was truly a treat for us historians. As a former prosecutor on this side of the pond, I am certainly familiar with courtrooms. But I must admit that despite representing the people in criminal cases, I would still feel somewhat intimidated having to present my cases in the trappings of the courtrooms within the Old Bailey. Thanks for tour!

Great video Rob. I did court duty there quite a lot between 1979/80. The cells looked just as they do in your pics then. I did No.1 court many times and it was eerie sitting in the dock where so many had been sentenced to death. I was on John Bindon's trial for most days and was present when Bob Hoskins gave his famous testimony. John was an absolute gentleman to deal with.

Bindon was a very dangerous and violent man, he would have been on his best behaviour while on trial at the Old Bailey of course, but meet him on the street or in a pub and it may have been a different story unless he was on form in jovial mood and was performing his party piece with the six half pint beer mugs he would thread over his enormous member.
@liamkatt64342 күн бұрын
@@lordeden2732 Many staff and prisoners tried to get him into conversations about that. His response was always the same, a amile and then his back would be turned.

@@lordeden2732 That story was widely talked about then 46 years ago. Everyone wanted to know the truth. Many prisoners in HMP Brixton and even staff tried to question John about it, but all they got was a broad grin and then he turned his back on them. A true gent.

In the old bailey libel trial brought about by Oscar Wilde the defence barrister was Edward Carson, a fellow dubliner who went on to be the founding father of northern ireland in the wake of the irish war of independence. Carson's heartbreak at the loss of the irish free state (the south) meant that he never took up the position of prime minister of northern ireland, instead preferring to return to london/kent where lived out his final years.

Great work as always. For a building of such grandeur to only take 5yrs to build, I'm very impressed.

Thanks Rob. Always an interesting journey. I really must visit some of these places. As a Londoner, I have no acceptable excuse not to.

Fascinating to know about the Fleet running free under the boilers! And the building itself is completely stunning, and its history captivating (pun intended). Thanks, Rob!
