If no one said already, Sister Mary Robert was dressed in a different type of dress because she was a "NOVICE" Nun (When a woman enters the novitiate, she is known as a novice and is called "Sister." The canonical novitiate is a year dedicated to prayer, exploring the meaning of the vows and delving more deeply into religious life and the charism (unique spirit or character) of the community) Amber was the first person I ever heard wonder why she was dressed differently! And when you both did the head move--side to side- and shoulder shrugs during the song scene, well that was so CUTE! So many people that have watched this movie have done the same thing!!!! This movie has so many life lessons, teaching them in a good way......Everyone stood up for their friends, from Whoopi's character to Rev. Mother too. They all had each other's backs, and thought of one another before themselves.

It reached #1 on the billboard top 100 on 27 April 1963 and spent 3 week there. Which made the 15 year old March the youngest female artist to have a chart-topping single. It was nominated for a Grammy in 1964 for the Best Rock and Roll recording. A good point. I used to claim I do not like musicals. Now I only say that most would have been much better if the effort put into the silly singing and dancing had gone into such things as plot and character development. I Liked all of the movies you mentioned (except Nightmare) but even in the theater wished for a fast forward button during the songs. The one except ion Fiddler on the Roof. I wouldn't change a thing in that one.

@@revjohnlee The songs are actually often used to fast forward the story, hence kids rarely have time to get bored. They're not just there as a break from the narrative & development, they are the narrative & development. "I'll Make a Man Out of you" is straight up a training montage, while "Hellfire" establishes Frollo's internal struggles regarding Esmeralda. Take those out and the stories would make less sense.

i agree this movie is a blend of many genres but above all, it's a comedy NOT a musical You need to watch the Sound of Music, if you want to see more of that genre If you watch that, you'll want to watch musicals until you faint It's a heartwarming story that shows how the feeling of embracing music can overcome the feeling of dread and foreboding Amber will definitely love it and I think you'd like it too Jordan My grandparents showed it to me when I was a kid and I enjoyed it a lot so take it from me... WATCH IT

I can't say I agree with that. I love musicals and would be quite happy to never see the sound of music again. I have nothing against the many people who love it, but I would never recommend it to someone who already doesn't like musicals.

The sound of music was one of my moms favorite movies. Sometimes we watched it everyday, just playing in the background. The first time I showed it to my daughter when she was about 6 she cried so hard when Maria left. She kept saying "she didn't even say goodbye". I had to reassure her to watch the rest. Now it's one of our favorites too and we watch at least once a year.

Whoopi was huge when I was a child. I’m surprised two people around my age haven’t seen much of her work. The scene in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone where the three get caught coming in late by McGonagall always reminds me of the scene with them sneaking in from the bar.

When she initially called Gene Roddenberry in 1987 to ask for a role on Star Trek: The Next Generation, he thought it was a prank call, since she was already a big star. The way she finally convinced him she was serious was to have LeVar Burton (a series regular on the show) deliver the message.

When this came out, I was in high school - an all girls’ Catholic school - and the nuns LOVED this movie. They couldn’t stop talking about it. Also, the Carmelites are an order of nuns. Others are Sisters of St Joseph, Sacred Heart, Little Sisters of the Poor, etc. Mary Robert was dressed differently because she hasn’t taken her full vows yet - she’s still a novitiate.

The black & white wimple & habit that the nuns wore in this movie was the traditional dress of U.S. Catholic nuns. After the Second Vatican Counsel of the 1960's some Catholic traditions started to change, one of them being the habit. The change from wearing the habit to "street clothes" slowly evolved from that point. Now there are very few, if any, orders that wear the traditional habit.

7:41 - Isis Carmen Jones, the girl who played Young Delores, also played Young Whoopi in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. 22:02 - The REAL neighborhood is a good neighborhood. My grandparents lived 3 blocks from that church (St. Paul's on Church Street). For the purposes of the movie, though, it's not a good neighborhood. 25:00 - One of my favorite lines in the movie (though you cut off the last part). 34:42 - It's not for nothing that she's DAME Maggie Smith. 41:51 - Holy rollers. The bubbly one was Sister Mary Patrick (Kathy Najimy). The quiet one was Sister Mary Robert (Wendy Makkena). Her singing voice was dubbed. The sassy/old one was Sister Mary Lazarus (Mary Wickes). Mary Wickes was a Hollywood actress ever since the late 30s all the way up to her death in '95. Now that you've seen this, you have to see Sister Act 2. It's not _quite_ as good as this one, but it's still a bangin' time and the music is just as fantastic.

I think you would also like the musicals: Hairspray, Joyful Noise ( with Dolly Parton), The Phantom of the Opera and its sequel Love Never Dies, Evita, Dreamgirls, The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, and Jekyll and Hyde. Those are all wildly different shows/movies but they each have incredible stories with a couple of them being based on real people and true events. Phantom and Loved Never Dies are Andrew Lloyd Webber masterpieces. Phantom has run non-stop in London since it first opened in1986! There is a 25th anniversary film that's recorded live from stage and there's a 2004 motion picture. Both are great in their own right so whichever you choose would be fine. The live show has an incredible surprise at the end that is quite special. Love Never Dies completes the story of Phantom and is only available as a recorded stage show and it is wonderful- if you choose to watch either or both you WILL need tissues. The same holds true for the next show. EVITA stars Madonna and Antonio Banderas and is a great motion picture and is another of Andrew Lloyd Webber's great shows. Jekyll and Hyde is also a show recorded live on stage and is a Gothic thriller. The rest are much more lighthearted shows. The Sound of Music is legendary and based on true events about a real family. It's a must see at least once in life. Mary Poppins is also legendary and such a great musical. There are great musicals out there and worth exploring!

"So they've just been stuck in there?" Ex-Catholic here, and one of my cousins overseas is an ex-nun. There are a whole lot of different types of convents, but some of them are quite literally just reclusive, and their calling is just to pray, and make up for those (like me) who don't. There are other ones who do go out into the community and do volunteer work, but the ones in this movie were of the former not the latter type. So having Deloris suggest that got them so excited, because they truly felt they had the power to do more, and now had permission (with the pastor's blessing). PS. my parents are from Poland, and the guy playing the Pope in this movie is clearly meant to look like Karol Wojtyła/John Paul II since he was pope at the time. My mom knew him long before he was a pope. The first time I watched this with her, I asked if it was blasphemous to have him enjoying and clapping along at the end. She said not at all, and he loved music. When she was a teenager, she would go to summer camp back when he was a bishop. He'd be there playing guitar, singing songs and the like. Apparently charismatic as hell.

I'm soooo glad you guys enjoyed this! My 85+ Irish Catholic grandmom adored this movie. :D I recommend Sister Act 2 as well, there's kickass music in it. And one of the leads is Lauren Hill!!!| Some Catholic knowledge for you - there are different "branches" for nuns and priests. Carmelites are known for fraternity, service and contemplation. So it would make sense for them to be helpful to the community, as they were after Dolores arrived. Prior to that, they were living a fairly cloistered life, which is sad. Understandable, in a dangerous area, but not part of the vows they took. As far as priests go, some take vows of poverty, and some don't. There's a ton more, of course, but at least this gives you an idea. Oh, and NO - ice cream isn't a sin, lol.

Also, I know others have mentioned the “bubbly” nun as Kathy Najimy (who also voiced Peggy Hill from King Of The Hill). She was also the third of the Sanderson sisters in Hocus Pocus. But I met her once at a Comic Con and she is just as awesome a person in real life as her portrayals in film. My wife was getting an autographed photo by her and was having a hard time deciding between Sister Act and Hocus Pocus. I suggested Sister Act and Kathy Najimy interjected “Is that the one you would pick?” I replied,”No, I would be all about King of the Hill ‘cause it’s my favorite.” She reaches right over and grabs one of her KOTH promo 8x10s and signs it for me for free! No extra charge! I looked at it later and it already had multiple signatures by other FAMOUS cast members including the person that voiced Lucky!!! (If you know, you know.) She was AWESOME!

The happy nun is the actress Kathy Najimy. She was one of the 3 sisters in the movie "Hocus Pocus". You must watch Whooping in the movie " The Color Purple". She should have won an Oscar for her portrayal of Celie. She did win an Oscar for her role in Ghost. You must watch the sequel of "Sister Act 2". "Sister Act 3" is in the works now and should be released this yr. or next. The older nun, the choir director, is the fabulous character actor, Mary Wicks. She was in so many memorable older movies and had a career span of over 50 years. She is in the movie White Christmas; which you should really watch......with Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney ( the actor George Clooney's aunt.)
