I saw this movie in the theatre as an 8 year old kid with my grandmother the next town over. We got lost on the way there and made it to the theatre just on time. I had been very scared when we were lost, but this light hearted classic made for a great time with my grandmother that I’ll never forget. Something that’s not in the IMDB info: Disney originally offered this to Bette Midler (as you read) but she turned it down after they gave her the option to do both “Hocus Pocus” and “For The Boys” which I always view as a win-win for both actors since Whoopie ended up with not just Sister Act but a the sequel that both adults and children love her for while Bette now has a children’s classic and a film that gave her another Best Actress nomination (which she should’ve won, in my opinion).

I love how you can always spot the sort of Producer-motivation to greenlight - not that it's anything hidden but, a recognition of the hook at its core being a live-out-loud sexual character being thrown into a quiet convent to stay low, yet both sides having a heartfelt character arc as a result. Also the added element of that structure being a most suitable vehicle for a particular actor's style. By the time the mid 80s came along, I feel like Hollywood had somewhat just began to get into the groove of latching onto formulas that would appeal to the broadest audiences. Films prior definitely had some structure to them but there's something relatively deliberate about the beat sheet of any given successful film starting in the 80s. That said, despite the formulas, there wasn't this rush to pump out endless amounts of content just to hold subscribers - filmmakers aimed to make their film special.

2:24 - This girl is the same actress who plays Young Guinan in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Rascals. 4:53 - Another Star Trek connection: Vinny is played by Max Grodenchik, who played Quark's brother Rom on Deep Space 9. 9:38 - Sister Mary Lazarus is played by classic actress Mary Wickes. She's been acting since 1942 and has been playing old women at LEAST since White Christmas in 1954. We lost her in 1995 and her last role was in the posthumous release of Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame (her second-to-last was actually Sister Act 2). St. Paul's was my grandparent's parish. Also, the first time I saw this movie was near the end of it's theatrical run IN San Francisco.

Haha - I so enjoy this and the sequel, and am so glad you've seen this one now! 😊 Watching this is a great way to get a smile. It's really a product of its time as far as the (on-screen) humor. Other trivia might be: As a Catholic who has also academically studied theology, the remixes 🤭 in this movie wouldn't actually pass for a Mass because during Mass the music is an extension of the communal worship, so musicians in Mass should never call attention to themselves or do something that could be construed as a performance. That being said, I've definitely jammed to "I will follow Him" during church retreats. 🎸 Unfortunately, Catholics who don't actually *practice* the faith often get the headlines or end up traumatizing people, so I'm *really* glad this movie is out there to bring light and laughter.

14:40 - Not quite: the older gospel acts (James Brown, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, etc) actually took old, established gospel hymns and put their own twist on them, which earned them the ire of baptist churches all across the U.S. and especially in the south. That's how My Guy came about. This one, My God, is the original version.

I loved this movie it came out. Being raised Catholic, it was very funny. Whoopi Goldberg was amazing, as she always is in her films. The actor I enjoyed most was Mary Wickes (in charge of the choir), a very successful movie star in her own right. She was a nun in a 1966 movie called "The Trouble With Angels" (and the 1968 sequel "Where Angels Go Trouble Follows" which also takes place in a Catholic school run by nuns. I saw these movies as a kid in the 70s and as a Catholic kid in Catholic school, I thought it was hilarious. Mary Wickes was my favorite character in those movies and so when I saw her in Sister Act, it just pulled all the right heart strings. I absolutely love her. She was a very good Broadway actress and her first film role was in 1942's "The Man Who Came to Dinner" and she was excellent in that. She was also in "Now Voyager" w Bette Davis. She has a very long filmography and television career. She pops up in the most surprising roles. She was also the original Mary Poppins in the 1949 show Studio One in Hollywood.
