Thank you for your excellent observation. I concur that in this first time hearing for them, they seemed to definitely miss or decided to not highlight the meaning of unrequited love, which is a rarity for my favorite "first time hearing couple". Nonetheless, as much as I adore the creative work of Linda Ronstadt, and as much as I adore the emotion of this particular song, portions of these lyrics in my opinion do not make the overall theme of the song immediately obvious (that being that the singer is singing about an unrequited love that she is experiencing, rather than singing about unrequited love in a general sense) such that multiple hearings are often necessary to reach that level of understanding. Additionally, her songs exude excellence on so many different levels that it is difficult to "take it all in" when hearing the song for the first time. Once again, thank you for your observation, and for reading through my gibberish in its entirety.

She was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Female Vocal Performance for this song in 1971. She is, to me, the most versatile female vocalist of all time. Ironically, she now says that she couldn't listen to this recording for a long time: "I never liked my performance on the record," she explained. The most recent interview I saw with Linda was sort of painful to watch because of her Parkinson's. Inside her mind she can still hit every note but, her muscle control is not there so she said she never sings at all any more. Her rendition of Karla Bonoff's masterpiece "Someone To Lay Down Beside Me" is absolutely her best work. Watch it live and you can see her become part of the song! (It has Andrew Gold on piano)

If you think you've been blown away by Linda, try 'Down So Low", another level of Linda Ronstadt

If you happen to watch The Last of Us, the episode this song is featured is one of the best episodes of TV I've watched in a while.

My favorite of hers all time. I followed her career as it happened. 60s 70s was the best music. This woman's voice. GOOD GOODNESS!!! One in a million quality folks. This song gives me goosebumps....

When I was trying to get over my college love, I always listened to this song and to Fleetwood Mac's Over My Head. Fortyfive years and the song still brings back memories of the emotional pain.

2 for 2 today! I also requested this one, and have been waiting for it. If you do "Again" by Janet Jackson next, it'll be a true trifecta!!! I've been requesting that one for about 2 years. This is very EARLY Linda Ronstadt. It's from 1970. It wasn't a big hit (#25) but it'll always be a #1 hit in my heart. 🙂

My mom went to high school with Linda in Tucson, Arizona in the early 1960s. She mentioned a few times that they were casually acquainted, though not close friends. My mother was a year younger than Linda, but she said Linda was friendly to her and they knew each other by name. Linda was already a musician even then, and she became famous not long after high school.

New genre for you, Linda singing Poor Wandering One from the movie Pirates Of Penzance.

Linda was sooo special. Another person you should listen to too is Emmy Lou Harris.

Please! Asked a few times - one genre of hers I don’t think you’ve done. She became HUGELY successful with American Standards, or CROONING music jay loves. Anything with Nelson Riddle Orchestra like “What’s New” “I’ve Got a Crush On You” “Someone to Watch Over Me”. Those songs with a hot bubble bath got me through the stress of grad school!❤
