One of the saddest, most bittersweet songs ever written. Melancholy is the perfect word for it. Amber picked up the plot WAY before I did when i first heard this song so many years ago. The plot twist had me shook when he sang "was someone else, not me". Been there done that, like so many others obviously. Unrequited love is the definition of heartbreak.

I Was 8 Years Old, When Phenomenal Singer-Song-Writer-Guitar Player David Gates, And Bread Came Out Onto The AM Radio Stations, The On The FM Stations, And I Have Loved Their Music Ever Since, And I Have Their Greatest Hits CD, Recorded Onto My Personal Music Player's Memory Stick, And Listen To Their Beautiful Songs Almost Every Day . . . :-)

You're correct that David Gates sang lead vocals on most Bread songs, especially their most popular ones. But James Griffin also sang lead on a number of songs, and he has a very good voice as well. You may want to check out 'Just Like Yesterday' by Bread, to hear his vocals.

Many of Breads hits went directly to the heart. So classic. Never gets old just better.

This is why you're great Amber. You actually listen to the lyrics AND sense the emotion. My favorite Bread song by far.

"Aubrey", "Sweet Surrender", "Guitar Man" and "Belonging" are other Bread songs for Amber. Other 70's soft rock songs by others you might enjoy. "Shower The People" and "Her Town Too" by James Taylor, "Wishing You Were Here", "No Tell Lover" and "Call On Me" by Chicago, "I'd Love You To Want Me" and "Me and You and a Dog Named Boo" by Lobo, "My Little Town" by Simon & Garfunkel, "Still Crazy After All These Years" by Paul Simon and "Precious And Few" by Climax . Don't think you reacted to any of these yet. Some off the top of my head. There are so many more you have not heard. The 70's were full of them. There are two other songs that are not all together soft rock songs, but they are. You have not listened to them yet and you should at some point. "Beginnings" by Chicago and "Marrakesh Express" (actually 1969) by Crosby, Stills & Nash.

The story of my life in song but I would never have read her diary. She pours her heart out in words that are only hers to share. It's not right to take that from her. Although it's a sad song, it does have a happy ending. She found the love of her life and the guy was able to move on and still remain friends.

The epitome of love: unselfish and wishing the best towards those we love. Even as it hurts when life takes them away from us. Pure love, the highest form. ❤
