“People in the music industry give me blank stares when I brush off 8 million dollar offers,” he wrote in a 730-word message posted to his Facebook account Thursday morning. “I don’t want 6 tour buses, 15 tractor trailers and a jet. I don’t want to play stadium shows, I don’t want to be in the spotlight.” Oliver continued, “I wrote the music I wrote because I was suffering with mental health and depression. These songs have connected with millions of people on such a deep level because they’re being sung by someone feeling the words in the very moment they were being sung. No editing, no agent, no bullshit. Just some idiot and his guitar. The style of music that we should have never gotten away from in the first place.”

I’ve listened to a few of his other songs. He’s from my state - Virginia - and from Farmville, where my alma mater Longwood University is. He’s got a song called Virginia that I dig because it’s about my state. “Lord they don’t never sing songs about Virginia, but Virginia she’s always singing to me.” ❤

RadioWV (Radio West Virginia) travels around Appalachia and records people singing Appalachian folk music. They recorded Chris Anthony Lunsford (Oliver Anthony Music is named after his grandfather) with a microphone and nothing else on Chris' 90 acres outside of Farmville, Virginia. Three weeks ago, Chris was singing in front of 20 people at farm meets. Last weekend he played another farm meet and over 5,000 people showed up. His music has touched something deep inside many of us -- the disillusionment, the sadness, the anger a lot of us are feeling. And I've seen people commenting on the reactor videos from all over the world saying that they feel it, too. I've truly seen nothing like this in all of my 54 years. He does have other great music on his channel, but he has said outright he doesn't want to play huge stadiums or get rich. He just turned down an $8 million recording contract offer. He just wants to pay off his acreage and start the small farm he dreams of.

He’s a real one too! He had a concert coming up in Knoxville, TN but then he found out the venue was charging $90/ticket & $200 for a meet and greet so he cancelled it and told everyone stop buying tickets because he said “it’s too expensive and he Will personally refund anyone who already bought a ticket.” He hopes to find a new venue that’ll only charge $25 and he’ll do free meet & greets!! He's got no label, no band, no money (yet). He wrote the song himself. He is overwhelmed by the reaction. A truly inspired gift for us. Yes, it's edgy and angry and passionate and painful, but it's truth and truth never goes down easy, but it is always good medicine. One more thing...for Chris. The line about abusing welfare - which seems to have the same small and noisy broken record minority angry with him - is a really important line to understand. He is not shaming welfare recipients. He's calling out abuse by folks who have the audacity to take advantage of that system, and do it literally on the backs of strangers all over this country just like Chris, who work to the bone every week to feed themselves and barely keep a roof over their own family's head. It's that hard work that makes those generous programs possible. Its grace in action. And it's the intense pressure on a man to provide for himself and others during a tough economy like the one we've been in for a few years now that can make that same good man give up the fight and crumble under the weight, and end up "6 feet underground". Think about that when you listen again...just in case you missed it. It's worth listening to and hearing 1000 times. What a gift.

Fight the globalism, don't let them distract you with social issues. They want total control over energy and agriculture, those are the next industries they're going after. Prime example is "climate change" created by world governments and billionaires, they're using fear to eventually seize food and energy production and distribution. In the name of the "greater good". Don't listen to them.

He played at some farmers market this week-usually 40 people -this week thousands who had driven from all over the country. Before he sang, he read from the Book of Psalms & teared up. This is a true anthem of the America I ❤. Not the one it’s become which breaks my heart. “ Livin in a new world with an old soul” ( and an old morality and faith in God) is not easy, but I pray God will see fit to bless us as He has before…but not before we return to Him.

You talked about the "cry" in his voice, or whatever.... It's called an "Appalachian holler". He's not in/from Appalachia, but from the Piedmont---close-by Appalachia. Any of the few other songs you do by Oliver (Chris) will be simple and heartfelt gold. I am a straight up metal head but this man has opened my soul to the sound of Appalachia. And I live in a part of the Appalachians. I suggest doing "I've Got to Get Sober" and then "Ain't Gotta a Dollar." I haven't listened to the other yet. He was recently offered an 8M dollar recording contract by John Rich of Big & Rich and he turned it down. He wants to stay humble and do things at his pace and doesn't want to be tied down to the stipulations of a contract and I 100% agree with him. However, he says he will come to different locals to perform for people. And that's awesome!

The offer to buy Oliver Anthony was not by John Rich. JR got involved because he was asked to as we know he is not part of the music industry machine. John Rich is involved to help navigate the waters and not get eaten by the sharks - definitely not to buy him. If you look into JR - he is known to help new talent, without the strings the music industry attaches. Oliver Anthony has received offers from multiple Music labels - one offer was for $8 million the others were for more.

You did this song justice. I heard it for the first time last night on TikTok and wrote a synopsis after contemplating it for a while: We all feel the weight of the world pressing down on our shoulders at times, and the song "Rich Men North Of Richmond" by Oliver Anthony encapsulates that feeling perfectly. The heartache and struggles faced by the ordinary individual in a rapidly changing world are something we can all resonate with. Imagine, for a moment, the anguish of someone who pours their heart into their job, only to be met with inadequate compensation. The lyrics "I've been sellin' my soul, workin' all day, Overtime hours for bullshit pay" depict the depth of this frustration. We all want our hard work to be recognized and valued. This song is a plea for acknowledgment and understanding in a world that often feels unyielding. Further, the lines "Livin' in the new world, With an old soul" effectively capture the sentiment of someone feeling out of place in modern society. It beautifully illustrates the feelings of people who may believe that contemporary culture has moved away from the values they hold dear. The Rich Men North of Richmond, as the song describes, represent more than just wealthy individuals; they symbolize the elite and the powerful who make decisions without considering the impacts on the common man. Moreover, the song touches upon social issues with a raw and genuine concern. The desire for politicians to care for workers, the glaring economic disparities, and the judgment faced by those relying on welfare are all spotlighted. The heartfelt plea for change and recognition can be heard echoing through every word. So, when you next listen to this song, take a moment to think about its deeper message. Let it remind you of the importance of understanding and empathy in today's complex world. And perhaps, it will inspire a conversation or action that brings about the positive change that the lyrics yearn for. Because if music can touch our souls, it can surely change our world.

I agree with what you said but I do believe you missed the most important aspect of the song. The struggle. Guys love ur reaction as usual. This guy is worth checking out. I mean on a personal level. For the last year or so alll he put out were his original sings recorded on his phone cam. He lives on a 90 acre piece of land outside of Farmville, Va. On a recent video he states he bought it for 96k and still owes 60k. He had planned on trying to make it a livestock farm. He lives inna 24 ft camper trailer with a tarp covering the roof. A WV radionstation known for helping promote unknown artists heard some of his music, contacted him. Came to his place, brought a good mic and good recording cam and this video is the result. The station posted it and now I guess its nearing or maybe exceeded 20 mil views. He states he hoped to generate 200k - 300k views over time. Hell, his personal intro videos about himself have already generated over 300k views. Many YT reaction videos have already exceeded 300k views. He has been contacted by prominent Country artists offering to produce his first album. He has supposedly turn down a $8 mil recording contract. Quickly after his song went viral, someone put together a hurried show at a farmer's market where he had performed before to a crowd of 20-30 ppl. This show without must announcement saw about 12-14k people show up causing a huge traffic jam. Some ppl flew in to the closest airport to hear him. He started the perform by first reading from Psalms. It worth a reaction. Some YT reactors have reacted to a video he made just before this one went out just to tell about himself and what he wanted ppl to understand about why he was making music and an honest admission about who he is and where he comes from. A most sincere, humble guy you will never meet. He says he's not that good of a singer and doesnt know he way around a guitar but he sure fooled me then. Highly recommend you guys react to his introduction and background video referenced above. Search Oliver Anthony...pleasure meeting you.Thank you guys for sharing this. Sorry for this encyclopedia. As you said, “his voice, his guitar, a mic…” and then Amber added “and the truth!” Amen. And as Amber also added “the song of the people.” You got that right. In a way that few songs in history have been. Just caught us all where we live when we needed it. Divine Providence.

I have watched several hours of reaction videos on YT about "Rich Men North of Richmond" and have seen young/old, males/females, all races, almost moved to tears at how powerful Oliver Anthony's lyrics are and the power and conviction he sings with. Gives me hope!!🙏
