@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT I never heard of U2 until The Unforgettable Fire was released. Pride played on the radio. After that took off is when U2 gained radio traction. Only after that did I hear other songs such as Sunday Bloody Sunday, New Years Day, and other songs from their first 3 albums before The Unforgettable Fire. I am sure they were popular from the start in other areas of the world but that is what I remember in High School. 1984.

Yes. The band wanted to keep an anti-solo ending and instead go on a more subtle feeling, like an haunting loop. The Edge could have go all out, but choose not to. In my sense its more powerful. Almost like a feeling you keep inside

Aw man! Y’all gotta do their song “Still haven’t found what I’m looking for.” MASSIVE hit like this one. Also, there’s a LIVE version of this one.. he pulls a girl out of the audience and they lay side by side on their backs..he’s beautifully singing and she’s mouthing the words. He’ll look over at her here and there.. Tears are streaming and you KNOW this girls heart is about to burst! AND she’ll never forget it..I wish I could remember the exact year and performance.. y’all REALLY should check it out- I’m sure plenty of folks in the comments will know the performance immediately- My memory ain’t what it used to be..🤦🏻‍♀️ ok, J just said it was just alright for him.. now you just gotta check out that SPECIFIC live performance 👆🏻with the girl onstage. And the bass line in “Still haven’t found what I’m looking” for is one I think you’ll both enjoy..J- The official video for it is really good as well.

U2 is alternative rock, new wave, post-punk. Much like Inxs, The Cure, Echo and The Bunnymen, Depeche Mode, etc. They were hard to classify, but fall under those umbrellas. Dance rock type of music. These groups have been for along time. '90s, '90s and '00s. Modern groups like Arcade Fire, Coldplay, Bloc Party, The Verve, etc too. As for ballads. It can be from any type of musical genre. R&B, rap, rock, hard rock/metal, soft rock, folk rock, , punk, new wave, alternative/indie, country, freestyle music, pop, etc. It just a slower emotional (mainly love, interpersonal, introspective,, etc ) songs.

One day....we got busted when the owner walked in and caught us...and thank God he had a sense of humor. His reaction was priceless....he never made a face...never stopped walking....just walked on to the back of the store and told us "I can run this store with or without you but I would prefer not to have to go thru the computer training again with a new employee" We busted out laughing....turned down the music and he just chuckled and shook his head. Loved that job...we got to watch MTV whenever we wanted and got to watch movies whenever we wanted while we worked....and got my hands on some killer posters to boot. Good Times!!!

Cannot believe there is anyone who hasn’t heard this song. The album Joshua Tree was 1987 Grammy Album of the Year. They beat Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and Prince that year. Any song on that album is stunning. Although they are a rock band, it’s not traditional 80s hard rock. But they started a theme of putting meaning back into rock songs. Not just sex, drugs and R&R. They were also very active in finding peace in Ireland. So their fame was not just music but activism as well. Still today. Oh and in this video, F.I.N.E young guys.

U2 is1 of the few bands that never broke up and consists of all original members. Their 1st album came out in 1980 but they've been playing together since they were teenagers in high school in the 70's. In fact, Bono is still married to his high school girlfriend from when they were 16.

You guys give me hope that today's generation doesn't have to miss out on all that good stuff we were so privileged to have a front row seat to when it was all happening. And most importantly, you prove that even though you don't have the nostalgia and memories of the times these songs hit it big which makes them so precious to us, you still nevertheless "get it" and have the APPRECIATION! 👍🏻

The beauty of U2 is their diversity and passion. Bono says every U2 song is a gospel song. This one means multiple things, his relationship with his faith and Jesus, and also his amazing beautiful wife whom he met and started dating the same week the band formed when they were kids in school. He and Ali are soulmates, still married, still in love.. he says she saved his life. It's a beautiful love story and in his memoir Surrender he talks about this song in relation to his relationship with Ali. He has written a couple songs for her; The Sweetest Thing and All I Want Is You. All I Want Is You ... Live at Slane Castle is a must watch. It's beautiful and so powerful. Always PASSIONATE, Bono gives you his entire soul when he sings live. Love them so much. Special band who have changed the world with their music quite literally. I hope you dig deeper and discover the magic of U2.

This song made me a U2 fan. That whole Joshua Tree album was fantastic. And then in the documentary Rattle and Hum they were followed on their US tour. It's interesting that Amber is wearing a B.B. King t-shirt because he was a guest in one of their concerts and in the movie it shows him at the rehearsals reading the lyrics to When Love Comes To Town and being seriously impressed by Bono's lyrics even asking him how old he is, LOL. Also you see drummer Larry Mullen getting very emotional during their visit to The Sun Studios and Graceland because he is such a big Elvis fan. He got to sit on one of Elvis' motorbikes after Bono charmed the tour guide, LOL.

I love how this song just builds. Everything, the guitar, bass, drums, vocals, gets more & more intense. And it's almost imperceptible until the end when it all quiets down again. I would recommend a fairly obscure U2 song "A Sort of Homecoming."

This song will always throw me back to 1986/7 and driving off-base in the Philippines. Fresh to Clark AB and learning to live in another county. The heat, the dust of the road being thrown up as we rode along. That memory is entangled with this song playing on AFRTS (base radio).

U2 dynamically is about their distinctive sound as an ensemble. The Edge gives them that unique sound palette with his guitar effects orchestrations and use of delays . Together with Larry and Adam they form a precise rhythm section that serves the song underlying Bono's unique vocals and subject matter such as love, war, religion..they have delved into different genres often whilst still maintaining a uniquely identifiable sound.

"With or Without You" is such a good song. One of U2's best! But it's really not a ballad. At its heart is in-fact about a romantic relationship, but it has turned sour and the subject is at odds with what to do or how to proceed. They can't live with the relationship, but also can't live without it. Much deeper when you truly dive into the lyrics. "See the stone set in your eyes, see the thorn twist in your side", "Sleight of hand and twist of fate, on a bed of nails she makes me wait" and "Through the storm we reach the shore, you give it all but I want more". Ballads are more about the love and getting it back, not fighting it. So it's essentially just an emotionally poised song. That said, the entire Joshua Tree album is excellent. Along with this song, there is also "Where the Streets Have No Names" and "I Still Haven't Found What I Am Looking For" (personal favorite) They are also incredible live.

U2's performance of "Where The Streets Have No Name" at the 2002 Superbowl halftime show was one of the best performances ever in Superbowl halftime history and was one of the most moving performances ever by a musical artist. The half time show was right after the September 11th attacks and I remember them performing this song while every single victim of the attacks was shown behind them. @@AndTheRoadGoesEverOn - Wow…that was before my time, but I always thought that ‘Pride’ was first released in the early 1990s. I hadn’t realized that it was from 1984. It would appear that U2’s ‘Pride’ was truly ahead of its time, since the genre of the song was more so the type that became more common in the 1990s Alternative Rock scene. The fact that the song didn’t depend on Synth as was common in the 1980s pop-rock scene, but while being highly innovative with the instrumentals and the vocal style, places this song as a 1990s genre released a decade before its time. 🍺🍺🍺

They've been making music since the late '70, 80s, 90s and 00s. Forever. So I'd say this is an alternative ballad. Lol. There's ballads for all types of genres.
