Jay & Amber.... the most intriguing line in this song is "we GET to carry each other", which is infinitely more meaningful and heartfelt than "we GOT to carry each other" - "get" is privilege and "got" is nothing more than a task. honestly, you both represent and reflect what this song is truly about.

No, that's the most cliché line in any song. It's a good message, but not intriguing. THE MOST INTRIGUING LYRICS AND VERSE in the song is: "LOVE is a temple LOVE the higher law (_repeat 2x_)..." There is no set of lyrics that perfectly suits the melody & Bono's stretched out notes & vocals as well as that unique verse alone.

This is, primarily, a breakup song. In fact, this was my divorce song back in 2011. After 23 years, we realized that we "ran a good company" together, but we were not the same. "Did I ask too much? More than a lot? Well you gave me nothin', now that's all I've got". "You say love is a temple... love the higher law. You asked me to enter, and then you made me crawl, and I can't be holding on to what you got... When all you got is hurt". What a song. What a song.

I have certainly met a hundred people who’ve had it at their weddings. I tell them, ‘Are you mad? It’s about splitting up!’” I never really listened to the lyrics just enjoyed the vibe.

If I recall, the song is derived from a meeting Bono had with a man dying of AIDS when it was in its early years who challenged the way people thought about / pitied / excluded HIV+ people. In that context, the lyrics take on a whole new dimension eg “You act like you never had love, and you want me to go without” And especially “You say love is a temple, love a higher law. You ask me to enter, but then you make me crawl Well, I can’t be holding on to what you’ve got When all you’ve got is hurt” Heartbreaking, attitude-changing, life-shaping words for us at that time.
@thondomain

@@stuartmorgan1770 I heard it was about an AIDS victim who was dying and his father. I always pictured the young man in a hospital bed and his father finally coming to visit. I think Bono said it wasn't but it sure fits lyrically. My younger brother died of AIDS and it was horrible watching him wasting away and dying. He wasn't rejected by family but his friends quit coming around, mostly out of fear. He was given contaminated blood after an accident and wasn't gay or a drug user, but there was a perception that all AIDS victims brought it on themselves.
@stuartmorgan1770
@stuartmorgan1770 2 жыл бұрын
@@thondomain You may be right about the father. I’m not sure - so long ago, I’d have to research it. I’m so sorry to hear about your brother. And yes, that experience of blame and rejection instead of tolerance and love was so prevalent. BTW there is a really excellent and heart-breaking UK TV drama series called “It’s a Sin” that explores the different reactions of different people to the gay community and AIDS victims in the UK when the disease first emerged It will challenge and break your heart but it is is soooooo good. With this lyric I guess the point was kind of - that is not how we treat people. with, say, cancer. And so “we’re one, but we’re not the same…” I so wish the world could almost go back to that time when we at least tried to listen to each other.

You're all wrong. The studio recording that ended up on Mary's album was horrible. However, the original live performance ft. Mary as a guest- the one that led to their official collaboration- was phenomenal. It was an occasional performance by the two done specially for the live Hurricane Katrina Relief telethon. It was truly like going to a gospel church and getting a religious experience. The entire gospel choir was made up of just one woman: Mary J. Blige. KZbin search it. (It's 4min 43seconds) U2's live version at Slane Castle is an incredibly close second, but nothing beats the original version on Achtung Baby!.

Absolutely!!! And when you think about the year it came out and how much competition there was in 1991, one of the greatest years for music ever-- Nevermind, Ten, Metallic's Black Album, Blood Sugar Sex Magic, Out of Time, Use Your Illusion, BadMotorFinger, Temple of the Dog, Into the Great Wide Open, Girlfriend, Gish, and so much more-- that just tells you how amazing Achtung Baby is to be able to stand out among so many other classics!!!

Interesting fact, the band was going in two different directions at this point in time. They could not agree on the sound moving forward for u2. Bono said that this point in time was the closest they came to splitting up. Then one night in the recording studio, the guitarist - The Edge - showed the rest of the band the riff he had been working on (the gentle one you hear at 6:59). It united the band together, and they have never looked back.

U2 donated the proceeds from the single version of One to AIDS research. They recorded the song in Berlin and part of the inspiration was the unification of Germany, although the breakup of Edge's first marriage was also said to be an influence. It was not about Bono's own marriage; he and Ali Stewart celebrated their 40th anniversary this year.

For what it's worth: I don't blame you Janet, but if you haven't seen them in the last decade I'd like to warn you that they aren't what they used to be. I've seen them live several times over the years and I'd rather not anymore after the last concert I went to. Everything is off. Idk. Ever since that bike crash in NYC Bono hasn't been the same and the band altogether has lost their energy and spirit. They're still talented, but Bono's voice has dropped off significant and I think they're increasingly using backing tracks for both the vocals and instrumentals. Their stage performances are more gimmicky, and their newer music has taken a dive. Also, they've seemed to have betrayed all they stood for over the years and on stage they tell you their music is about things it was never about before. Then there are breaks in the performance when it gets to be about corporate sponsored charities, and they solicit participation from the audience on the spot. It's hollow and I felt duped for attending the concert. Just my two cents. If you do go, I wish you all the best. Visiting Ireland, whether Dublin or anywhere else, I think you'll have a great time. I highly recommend going to the pubs with live music, especially traditional Irish music. Also, if you're anywhere near the bridges at night in Dublin, keep your eye out for performances on the bridges or on either side of the river. Often there will be dance performances.

“One” is one of my top 5 U2 songs. The music beat is great but the lyrics are brilliant-“Did you come here for forgiveness? Did you come to raise the dead? Did you come here to play Jesus to the lepers in your head? Did I ask too much? More than a lot? You gave me nothing now it’s all I got.” Amazing lyrics. Love this song and love this band. I got to see them twice in concert and it was different than just seeing a fantastic live band performance. Seeing U2 back in their heyday was an “EXPERIENCE”! I was 15 years old and managed to get tickets to the Joshua Tree tour show in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I bunch of kids from my high rented a school bus to drive us and bring us home (more than half of us didn't have our licenses yet!). What an experience...first real concert, and on my own with friends from school! What a night, listening the crowd singing together after the encores ended. The echoes of thousands of voices, still gives me shivers of emotion. One of my favourite and heartbreaking sings by U2 is from Rattle and Hum; "All I want is You". Beautiful and heart rending at the same time, especially the music video.

I'm SO HAPPY you reacted to this song, my absolute favorite from U2. And I'm so glad you realized that he's not necessarily talking about a romantic relationship between two people. Back in the 90s, the members of the band were going through some rough waters and they were contemplating breaking up. Bono sat down in the recording studio and sang this song. It re-energized them, and the rest is history. For more great U2, check out "Mysterious Ways" and "Angel of Harlem." Also "The Sweetest Thing" -- be sure to watch the official video! But honestly, you can't go wrong with any of their songs. They're an amazing band.

Bono's voice conveys emotion & longing in a way that few singers can match. Combined with the otherworldly guitar prowess of Edge and the amazing talent of the rest of the band make U2 legendary. I love U2 especially their work from the 70's and 80s. IMO this song and the album "Achtung Baby" are the pinnacle of their work. This album is phenomenal and, in my opinion, just as good if not better than "The Joshua Tree" which is another fantastic album. When "The Eagles" came out with "Hotel California" even they knew that they would never be able to produce anything near as good anymore. And so, I believe U2 either consciously or subconsciously set out to reinvent themselves and went in a direction that had them evolve to stay relevant. Understandable, but Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullin no longer have that raw energy that had a bit of punk, a bit of new wave, some rock, some pop and even some blues infused into their sound. Again, understandable I just wish I could have my cake and eat it too when it comes to music from the great U2.

As a Gen-X’er I’ve always felt like U2 was our generation’s version of the Beatles. In so much as, their impact on culture, the music of their day and the influence they had on some bands that came after them. For many of us they provided the soundtrack for that time in our lives. Also, they were one of the last bands where an entire album/CD was experienced. The Beatles also had this kind of experience. From the first song to the last, there was something special about listening to the whole list of songs played in the order they were recorded. That has been lost in music for some time now.
