@@SupernalOne since the noise appears when she's closing and opening her eyes it's suggesting to be the noise of a camera shutter. Older and larger cameras made that noise quite loudly. However, I always associated both with that noise, a camera as well as a rifle. I think she's playing with that ambiguity here.

No, definitely British Forces Post Office, all military stations overseas has a BFPO number similar to a post code or zip code e.g. RAF Laarbruch in Germany where I was in the 80’s was BFPO 43. In the song the line ‘coming home from BFPO’ is a reference to returning to the UK from overseas & in the context of the song he was obviously a casualty. Not sure if the physical BFPO as a unit were responsible for the repatriation of fallen servicemen though.

Kate is a massive talent - accomplished musician, writer, arranger, producer, studio engineer, dancer, choreographer, responsible for all her own album artwork, the concepts for her videos - shows up many of today's 'stars' for the corporate tools they truly are. She also had the courage to walk away when she wanted to start a family. Give her track 'Hammer Horror' a listen - it's almost prog rock in it's ambition.

It was when he first visited the family home in Kent and she played him tapes of over 50 songs she had written at that point - others would also end up appearing on The Kick Inside and Lionheart.

If you can't tell, this is an anti-war song. Just like in the U.S. many of the recruits of the British army choose that path because of a lack of other opportunities. But instead of the experience helping them get ahead, it will end up killing them. Their mothers might be proud when they join up to serve, but will grieve when they receive a letter from the army saying their boy has died.

Some of those the British Military attacked, shot back....

So glad you did this song. One of the first Kate Bush songs I heard the summer I was 10 and it's remained one of my favourite songs. The first stanza sets the premise of the story: "Our little army boy Is coming home from B.F.P.O. I've a bunch of purple flowers To decorate mammy's hero Mourning in the aerodrome The weather warmer, he is colder Four men in uniform To carry home my little soldier" The song is an anti-war song. The main character is a mum grieving for her young son (less than 20) whose body is being shipped home through the BFPO (British Army mail postal system). I think :"Army Dreamers" is from the tranche of songs she wrote as a teenager! Not an older teen, but young teen! Try "Oh To Be In Love," it's from eh same era, late 70s early 80s.

At school we were reading "Wuthering Heights" for our English literature exam (O'level), in England when Kate was number 1 in UK charts with her song of the same name. For me and my family her music always sounds best when listening to it driving and walking in the English countryside preferably in Autumn when it's chilly with grey skies above. Then going home as it gets dark and all the lights are glowing from cottages and houses along the tiny country lanes. It always provokes a deep, almost magical atmosphere of enchantment and mystery. Very thought provoking and leaves me with a lovely warm sense of, " old fashioned", contentment. Especially if we finish off the walk with a cream tea in a pretty little oldey worldy tea rooms. Sorry, I got a bit carried away. Her music just does that to me.❤✌🇬🇧

This song has a classic waltz time signature, it's probably what was making you feel so nostalgic and thinking about old-timey circuses. The idea of the song being a folk waltz and pairing it with a war-- what is a war if not a dance between two parties? why have I never seen her. This came out Sept 22, 1980. How did I miss her. Music was still my life then. I was a singer in a lot of little R&R bar bands. Some times 2 or three at a time. Never lead just backup. I can play drums wont say more then that other then I dont speed up or slow down keep that beat good. When ever I did play drums we soon found someone much better. But this woman how did I miss her.

Here in the U.S. she was mostly played on college radio and some commercial alternative radio, so if you were listening to either of those you would have heard of her. I discovered her by accident at 16 while driving. It was the song "The Dreaming" and I just happened to hit a station left of the dial and voila there she was. I remember the whole experience clearly. It was a watershed music moment for me.

The story goes that after Kate turned down the offer to support Fleetwood Mac on their US tour EMI America was so annoyed they refused to release any of her records in the US between early 1979 (after her SNL performance) and 1982. Never Forever the album was only available as an import - it topped the import charts in NYC where John Lennon was a vociferous supporter. The record company were probably correct in thinking that Kate was not prepared to do what was necessary to be successful in the US, She has never liked being away from home for long periods, She also went out of her way to produce music that defied genre. This was a problem with US radio. In the UK she was already very well known (the most photographed Woman of 1978) and financially secure for life due to her ownership of her music and her massive early sales (the 8th biggest selling album of 1978 and 10th biggest selling single).

The context of the single was the British Army's ongoing counterinsurgency campaign in N. Ireland, which had already been going on for ten years. The song gets banned on public broadcasting here when Britain goes to war. If you want another powerful commentary on "The Troubles" listen to The Cranberries: "Zombie" which criticizes all sides and is even more heart rending.

Kate denied it was directly connected to Northern Ireland. She said she imagined the son had died during training manoeuvres in West Germany. I always thought of it as a sad ballad because there’s such a darkness to it, rather than a lullaby, but I did a little digging on what the song is about, in case you didn’t know. It’s about floating in water in something like the ocean where she’s all alone. She’s afraid, like the lyrics says, that if someone sees her, they’ll think she’s a buoy. And she’s so afraid that she just wants to go to sleep, but she knows if she goes to sleep she’ll go under the water.

Kate Bush is undoubtedly one of the greatest artists in Europe, inspiring countless musicians. Artists like Björk, Tori Amos, and many others cite her as an influence. Just last week, Kate released a new short animated video, and in a live BBC interview, she mentioned that she’s working on a new album. We Kate Bush fans are beyond excited for this upcoming release, which is bound to be something extraordinary. I can also highly recommend her last album from 2011, 50 Words for Snow, and her live album from the 2014 concert series, which was released as well.

The rage often boils down to this: “An artist that I don’t like got in, but the one that I love didn’t get in! Screw the Rock Hall!” There are more colorful variations of this complaint, just check social media. That’s natural: music fans, and particularly rock music fans, are incredibly passionate about the bands and artists that have shaped their life. A shared love for an artist can create friendships and communities. And as we progress down rock’s timeline, there are more and more offshoots and subgenres of rock and roll. In recent years, the Rock Hall arguments veer from “my favorite band is better/more important than your favorite band” to “my favorite artist is rock and roll and that one isn’t: why are they being inducted?” In its early years, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame subscribed to Rolling Stone magazine’s canon of rock history, which made sense: Jann Wenner is a co-founder of both. And Rolling Stone was never a friend to heavy metal, or even hard rock: they infamously trashed Black Sabbath’s debut; for many, that album is considered heavy metal’s “ground zero.” That’s why the Hall’s failure to vote in Judas Priest, Motorhead and Thin Lizzy seems like such a slap in the face. It’s not just that they aren’t inducting legendary bands; it feels like they’re disrespecting an entire culture, one that is healthy and relevant in 2020. With all due respect, are there festivals or cruises based around the disciples of the Dire Straits in 2020? The nominating committee has been pretty strategic when it comes to hip-hop nominations. There is usually just one artist on the ballot, so that they don’t split the hip-hop vote. Notorious B.I.G. was nominated this year. This year, Jay-Z got in? He's a fuckin scrub....so many "acts" on this year's inductees? Should never be on the ballot for the next 30 years. Like what they did to Rush. 30 plus years and Rush FINALLY got in and has infinite more talent than anyone on the ballots. Place is a joke. Even when I visited, I was pissing everyone off. Amazing song!! It reminded me of a movie called 'In Country' with Bruce Willis and Emily Lloyd about a young girl that just graduated from high school and is trying to find out about her father who was killed in Vietnam before she was born. I was one who couldn't do a lot of the things I dreamed about as a boy due to circumstances, so I joined The Marine Corps, it hit home pretty hard. I really didn't think about it while I was in the service, but circumstances could've ended my life before I even got the chance to live it. The day after my 20th birthday, a suicide bomber killed 241 Marines and sailors and 58 French military personnel in Beirut, Lebanon. I was stationed at Camp Pendleton in Cailfornia at the time, but I knew 5 of the Marines that died. Two of them were in my platoon in Basic Training, and I went to Cook's school with 3 of them. R.I.P. my brothers! Again, GREAT pick! Great Female Friday!!

You cannot go wrong with a Kate Bush album, especially her earlier work. Try violin off the Never Forever LP (same one Army Dreamers comes from). That's one of her rockin' songs, and it's brilliant.
