Stevie Ray Vaughan wasn’t just an incredible guitarist. He was also a big hearted man. I’m not sure how it came about, but one of the therapists I worked with at the Yale Psychiatric Institute in New Haven, CT in the late 80’s became friends with SRV and told him about the teens we worked with. SRV became the pen pal for a bunch of them. This was before email, so it meant taking the time to write a letters to each kid and responding to what was said in the last one, (and we aren’t talking form letters) then getting them into the snail mail. It was huge to kids that had been in the hospital for up to a year and felt very forgotten. He was at the height of his career at that time.

Stevie had finally met in Jeff Healy. Both had the ability to make the blues sound so blistering yet so smooth and cool. Something special in their finger tips. It’s unbelievable cause their not play super tricky stuff, I mean some of it is difficult, but most guitarist could play their solos note for note perfectly and yet sound no where NEAR as good or interesting as Stevie. Even the best guitarists in the world.

Your vibes are legit. The music style is called "Twelve Bar Blues." It's basically just three chords needed and repeated with solo'ing layered throughout. ZZ Top and AC/DC's songs are almost all TBB, for example.

@nickcrisp72523 жыл бұрын
@@guitarkis4969 Yep, it's I-IV-V, but here there's a particular way to approach the rhythm, picking notes off the top strings (usually) on the downstrokes to define the melody/bass, with muted upstrokes on the thinner strings, either open or from chords, depending on the sound you want and the key you're in. Or you can get the same feel just with chords, not being particular about a top line.

SRV's mentor was Albert King, who was a self taught guitar player. He was a leftie, and when he first learned to play he took a right handed guitar and turned it upside down. So unlike other lefties like Cobain and Hendrix, his strings were always upside down with the thickest on the bottom and the thinnest on top. Albert King is one of the three "Kings" of blues along with BB King and Freddie King.

So glad you discovered Jeff Healey! I was fortunate enough to have seen him play live multiple times in the late '80s and early '90s. Jeff broke a string during one of those shows. He yanked the broken string off so he could keep playing and dropped it on the stage, and I got one of the roadies to give me that string (which I still have). SRV is also a favorite concert memory for me. I saw him on a double bill with Joe Cocker just a month before we lost Stevie.
