FINALLY! The Supremes! The first ladies of Motown!! Diana Ross was only 16 when The Supremes put out their first single. In 1964, they had FIVE CONSEUCTIVE #1 hits - "Where Did Our Love Go", "Baby Love", "Come See About Me", "Stop! In the Name of Love", and "Back In My Arms Again". And they had SEVEN more #1 hits after that! Really, as far as female groups go, you can't get much bigger than this. The original lineup consisted of Diana, Mary Wilson (who sadly passed last year), and Florence Ballard (who, even more sadly, died at the tender age of 32 in 1976.) Diana is now 77 and is still going. In fact, she released her 25th studio album just last year!

The Supremes are the very definition of Motown. Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard were the original singers and whose voices you hear on this song. Mary Wilson had a bit of a solo career but none reached the heights of Miss Ross. They are still one of the best selling girl groups of all time. From “Baby Love” to “Someday We’ll Be together”, you can’t go wrong. Active in the 60s and 70s. [edit to correct Ms. Wilson’s name]

Mary Wilson, NOT Mary Wells, who was another Motown singer. Mary Wilson (born March 6, 1944) is an American vocalist, best known as a founding member and longest member of the Supremes. Wilson remained with the group following the departures of other original members, Florence Ballard in 1967 and Diana Ross in 1970. Following Wilson's own departure in 1977, the group disbanded. Sadly Mary Wilson died a year and a day ago.

They had so many great hits such as "Where Did Our Love Go", "Baby Love", "Come See About Me", "Back In My Arms Again", "I Hear A Symphony", "You Can't Hurry Love", "Love Is like An Itching In My Heart", "Love Is Here & Now You’re Gone", "You Keep Me Hangin' On", "Love Child", "Someday We'll Be Together" etc.

Funny fact. This song was written by the Motown team Holland-Dozier-Holland, two of which were in relationships with the Supremes. The other one got busted in a motel room by his wife when he was with another woman. The wife started busting up the room when he said "Stop! In the name of Love." Then he thought it would be a great idea for a song and the rest is history.

@@theccpisaparasite8813 You must be joking the other woman at Motown were prettier than Diana ,her two colleagues in the Supremes were prettier . Diana was a right bag of bones ,& looked like she was in desperate need of a good few plates of scran to munch down on . The Marvelettes ,the Velvelettes & Martha & the Vandellas were better groups & singers ,they would have had more hits ,given the same backing & hype as the Supremes . I saw Diana in concert at some time after she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for Lady Sings the Blues. She devoted a segment of the concert to the songs of Billie Holiday (need to listen to her). I was somewhere around the 10th row, but when she made eye contact with me at the moment she was singing I Love You, I believed it. Wow, what an incredible stage presence and connection to the audience!

I was in the front row seats when The Supremes came to Glasgow (Odeon Cinema which doubled as a theatre), as part of The Motown Review Tour, in 1965, and television couldn't do Motown justice. The live performances (nothing was mimed - or lip synching as you say in the USA) were hot. Earl Van Dyke Six was the backing band - it was really The Funk Brothers, anyway. Top act, for me was Smokey and The Miracles; we also had, Martha and The Vandellas (as good a female group as any); Liitle Stevie Wonder (he was only 14) who was sat at his drum kit and sang, played drums and harmonica (he'd had his hit 'Hey Harmonica Man). A magical night in Glasgow

They rivaled the Beatles. When they performed this live, their backs were turned and they whipped around and held up their hands as they sang STOP. (You might want to watch them perform this live) This came out around 1965. The band for almost all Motown songs is called The Funk Brothers. James Jamerson is a legendary bass player. There is a documentary about the band called "Standing In The Shadows of Motown." BTW, Tracee Ellis Ross (the mom on Blackish) is Diana Ross's daughter.

The Supremes were one of the biggest groups at Motown, yet they also seem to be the group that no one remembers. Names like The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Miracles, Smokey Robinson, and Marvin Gaye are instantly recognized and remembered, but not so The Supremes. It's a real mystery, especially when you see the massive list of hits they had. Diana Ross is also well remembered but this is mainly for her solo work and not her work with The Supremes. 3 girls from the Brewster Housing Projects in D-town. Stevie Wonder from the same area. Very humble start, they were just trying to make a name & get out of the ghetto. Barry Gordy saw in them what no one else did.

See the movie "Dream Girls" with Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson (Which launched Jennifer's career.) They were modeled after Diana Ross and Mary Wells of the Supremes and the story is a (very) loose adaptation of their real careers.

You can't go wrong with a compilation of Diana Ross and The Supremes, even if Motown shamelessly released many such compilations. The only criticism I'd have about Motown's 60's output is that production quality always seemed low to me compared to what George Martin did with the Beatles at the same time. It's like it's "tinny" with bad stereo separation - maybe designed for mono portable radios of the time but doesn't age well 50-60 years later, unlike the Beatles.

Not trying to be difficult, but you guys need to let true r&b fans choose the r&b songs out of the very few that you do instead of allowing rock and pop fans do the choosing, because they (true r&b fans know which songs and artist to choose. Most and not all of the few r&b songs that you play were mainly popular with pop fans.

The Supremes were Diana Ross, Mary Wilson. , and Florence Ballard. The other two didn’t have a solo career after Ross went solo. Florence was forced out by Diana in late 1967 and Mary continued the group with different singers in the 1970’s.

Stop! was The Supremes’ 4th number one hit in a row. Their next song, the live performance of which you would love, also hit number one. To this day they are the only American group ever to have 5 number ones consecutively. By the end of the 60’s they had 12 number ones and Diana went on to have 6 more on her own as well as many number ones internationally. They were wonderful together but Diana outshined the other 2 members. She was the star of the group. I recommend that you check out Diana’s international number one hit, “Chain Reaction”. It’s a fab video from the 80s and it has a throwback sound of the 60s. She takes us through various stages of her career via costumes, hair etc. I saw The Supremes three times live and you really need to watch their live performances as others have suggested. Do “Back in my arms again” from the Mike Douglas show. It’s a Supremes’ fans favorite! I enjoy your reactions. They are so genuine. I loved your “Take me higher” reaction. I could see Diana’s voice, message, beauty and performance take you both over. It was magical! 💙

I have to disagree. Flo actually had the better voice. Diana outshines because she was the bigger Diva and she got involved with Barry and made demands for it to be Diana Ross and the Supremes. Much like what was going on with the Temptations. But Mr Ruffin wasn't sleeping with anyone.

Janette I grew up with the Supremes and saw them in person several times. They were all spectacular performers. Having witnessed their rise to fame and lived through it I find it interesting when people try to rewrite their history. By 1965 the group had had 6 hits (5 of them number one) and Diana was lead vocal on these initial classics. All these hits happened as they were also becoming trailblazers for future artists as well as for artists from Motown. When Florence sang lead vocals the songs bombed. Diana and Berry (not Barry) fell in love in 1965 and consummated their relationship in Paris during that year. This was after Diana had proven that she could take the group to the top of the charts on a consistent basis. She didn’t need to “sleep with Berry” to get ahead as she was already there and she brought the group and the company along with her. You make it sound so crass when you imply that Diana slept with Berry to get ahead especially since it’s not the case. I am so tired of that misconception. They were in love and if you watch recent interviews with Gordy he still claims that Diana is the love of his life and she still professes her live for him. Their love is precious not callous and cheap. Florence had a much different voice than Diana. She was earthier in her sound but that wasn’t what Motown wanted. They wanted the more commercial sound that Diana possessed. It was a business decision made when the Motown sound was just being popularized and Diana’s sound helped bring the Motown Sound to the masses because of its crossover appeal. It’s show business and Berry knew in which direction he wanted his company to go and he knew that Diana was the one to bring it to the levels of success that he envisioned. You probably still won’t agree with me so I probably just wasted my time but I was there and I don’t know if you were but everything you write seems to come from hearsay and opinions that have been floating around for years and are not based on facts or reality.

The Supremes, as many have pointed out, were Diane Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard. They were built up to be the ultimate representation of Motown, so they were put through charm school! "Diane" was deemed not dramatic enough, so she became Diana. (Motown boss Berry Gordy is the father of one of Diana's daughters...) When Flo Ballard was removed from the group, she was replaced by Cindy Birdsong, formerly of Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles.
