I like that you noticed him playing the guitar in an odd way, with his thumb going over the top. He’s got the guitar tuned to an open chord so that all strings strummed open (unfretted) play a natural chord. Then pressing the thumb on the top four strings and letting the bottom two ring out on every chord creates a really nice tone.

I am a huge REO Speedwagon fan. Been a fan since I am 13 (I am 57) Seen them over 20 times in concert! The lead singer is Kevin Cronin. Gary Richrath, the lead guitarist was a driving force behind REO's sound. Gary left the band in 1989 & unfortunately passed away in 2015. I have a request. There is this band called "Richrath: Project 3:13. They are like an REO tribute band. They do old REO tunes plus original material. Could you do a reaction by them with the song "Heard It On The Radio"? Please & thank you!

Kevin Cronin is playing his guitar with just his thumb because he has his guitar in a special tuning for that song where all he has to do is put his thumb down for like 2 or 3 of the chords and one of the chords doesnt require anything on the frets, just an open strum of the strings. I found the tuning in a video online and tuned one of my acoustics in that tuning and will occasionally play this song the way he does. It's a fun little thing to do.

It was great to hear Wolf man when I was a kid. I must have been 7 or 8 years old I got to pocket transit to radio for Christmas. It had a little ear piece. One single air piece to listen to in your ear. And it was hard class ticket actually hurt your Ear it was way before the time of ear buds. Anyways when I would go to bed. I would pull the covers over my head. Pull my radio out from under my pillow. an listen to Wolf man, Jack What a great memory.... I gotta little sidetracked there anyways. What I was gonna comment on to on was early. REO Speedwagon was my favorite. Before this album ever came out. They seem to have a more edger style than that. I really liked And they're live. performances were amazing.

First of all, THANK YOU so much for returning to REO. You may recall the band's history; after 5 unsuccessful albums with three different lead singers, the label said that if they wanted their contract renewed, they had to get rid of Mike Murphy (the redhead that Jordan liked on "Riding the Storm Out") and bring back Kevin Cronin, seen here. That sixth album, although still not a smash, was enough to convince the label to re-sign them and commission the live album, "You Get What You Play For", which is a complete classic. Amber, 90% of the time I agree that the studio albums are a good starting point…but every rule has exceptions. With Cheap Trick, you want to hear the "At Budokan" live album…and for REO, "You Get What You Play For" is a serious *MUST* You want suggestions? Start at the beginning of that live album, with one of Gary Richrath's classic songs "Like You Do" and go straight through to the end, Gary's ultimate masterpiece "Golden Country". Plenty of great songs by Kevin on there as well, and the only song you have already heard is "Riding the Storm Out", and you heard Mike Murphy, so hearing Kevin sing it live will be new as well. DO THIS NOW. (Please?) After the success of the live album, they went back to the studio and came up with their eighth album, "You Can Tune A Piano But You Can't Tuna Fish", which features IMO the two best songs Kevin Cronin ever wrote, namely "Roll with the Changes" and this. This is a very personal song for Kevin. In High School he was a skinny little thing and the "Tough Guys" used to beat him up and call him gay. So when he finally did get a girlfriend, he clung to the relationship…perhaps a bit too long. Once it became clear that things were not working (see the lyrics here), he broke it off, but couldn't do it face to face, waiting until the band's first tour outside of Illinois. (This was the trip where the band got caught in the Rocky Mountains, leading Gary to write "Riding the Storm Out".) Although he wrote the song in 1973, Kevin was fired from the band not long after, and so it didn't get recorded until Kevin was already dating his first wife Denise, whom he'd been pursuing after this breakup, as Kevin details in "Roll with the Changes" . So it all fits together, nicely. ("Keep On Loving You", which you have covered, is about Kevin's reaction to discovering that Denise was cheating on him, but that is a whole other story.) Again, thank you, thank you, thank you. And again, next should be "Like You Do", the first track off of the 1977 live album, "You Get What You Play For", please. Trust me. I gave you "Father Christmas". I gave you Traffic. TRUST ME. :)

The entire composition is different and it was one of the best parts of their tour. I know you've already done Roll With The Changes but the live of that one is fabulous too. They played venues such as Frat parties and pubs [ Chances R ] and many others. They were always very friendly, became very good friends with their fans and developed a huge local following. They payed their dues and finally made it to the " big time" . Never, did they forgot where they came from. A most underrated band with a great deal of musical acumen. They were fun to be around and we were glad to call them our friends. RIP Gary !

“Don’t Let Him Go” is definitely a great next REO reaction. Live shows depend on the artist and the performance itself for me. When those two click, it’s magic. I have to listen to the initial studio version first, and then the live version. Then you really get to hear, and sometimes see, how they brought out the song more, audibly and visually. Pink Floyd, Stevie Nicks, Tina Turner, Freddie Mercury, Meat Loaf, Prince are a few of my favorite live performers. They ARE their music.

You are right on about touring and performing!!! That is part of what made so many groups great in the 60s, 70s and 80s. If you made a great studio album but couldn't repeat and improve it on stage no one bought the next album. It was part of the culture and it was a paramount expectation from fans that when you went to a concert you would get the studio version +100x in power, experience and delivery. You had to be able to play live cuz there was no auto tune, pitch correction or technology to hide behind.

REO is an incredible band, I saw them on their Wheels are Turnin' tour in Greensboro, NC in 1985 - Survivor was their opening act (Eye of the Tiger - the Rocky III Theme)....that entire 3 hours was nothing but hit after hit from both bands. They even performed together for a couple of songs, I had never seen anything like it before! That was my senior year of high school and I saw what I thought was going to be three bands perform at that location that year, but of the three, two of them had opening acts that were also producing chart toppers at the time: Foreigner with Giuffria opening, REO with Survivor & then Chicago.... their opening act cancelled so their opener was an unknown solo guitarist. Chicago was great though - the Peter Cetera days just prior to his departure from the band in June of '85.

I vote for the studio version too. Live is great, but for these memories I want to hear the song I heard on the radio a thousand times. Give it a listen in the car on the way to school. Singer is Kevin Cronin. The guitar was tuned specifically for this song. He could play a few chords with just a bar using his thumb or even open if you watch closely. As others have already commented I vote for "I Can't Fight This Feeling" and "Tough Guys".

Great song, and one of the most underrated guitarists of all time, Gary Richrath owning that Les Paul like he always did. REO was a great band, but the years with Richrath were special. RIP to one of the greatest to ever do it.

Finally, REO Speedwagon! Good selection guys. I have seen them many times. I even caught a drumstick thrown in the audience from them! Looking for a real banger next time, checkout "Back On The Road Again" which was written and sung by their bass player Bruce Hall. Thanks.😎

I love you his band. I’ve seen them twice so far. Their album Hi Infidelity is my favorite. I wore out the record, cassette tape and 2 CD’s! Now I have it on digital. ❤❤❤❤

Saw them in 1985 and they were amazing live. Then in 2018 with Styx and Don Felder. They were just as great. Such a great band. And the lead singer is Kevin Cronin.

I saw them in 2018 as well with Styx and Don Felder in Denver, I believe! Fantastic concert! Totally lost my voice that night, lol. I got picks from Kevin, Tommy, JY, Chuck and Don. They were all great and really love their fans. They're all classy guys!! Best concert!! 🎶💜

REO Speedwagon was the last concert me and my dad went to about 17 years ago. It was in Waco Texas and it was only $25 a ticket. Still the same lead singer and they sounded great.

I am in Champaign,IL, where REO are from. These guys were famous in IL, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Iowa, long before becoming superstars. "Riding The Storm Out" and few others had already been released and were regional hits and had to be re-released after REO took off.

They were a local band around here. i didn't realize they were becoming famous until I was working out of state about 900 miles away. One of my co workers mentioned their name and I said. I know them. Actually I knew Gary and his brothers and sister. They thought that was something. I guess I was working and not paying attention. They were a nice family.

This on and "Keep On Rolling" are my two favorites. The line in Keep on Rolling "If You're tired of the same old story, turn some pages" is perfect. But most of their catalog is fantastic. Golden Country, Son of A Poor Man, Lighting, I could go on and on about them.I saw them Live in Chicago in 1980 during the high of there popularity.

This song is from their Hi Infedelity album. One of the first records I bought as a kid with my own hard earned money. I love every song on this album! Most of the songs never got any air play, but are just awsome!!!
