38 Special was a southern rock band that featured front man Donnie Van Zant. And, yes, he was Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyd's little brother. Years after Ronnie's death from the plane crash, Lynyrd Skynyrd reformed in 1987 with a third brother, Johnnie Van Zant, taking over lead vocals and primary songwriting responsibilities. So much southern rock history tied into these siblings.

Before they had a band name, they went to practice in an old building they had rented out in the woods and had lost/forgotten the key….. They climbed through a 2nd floor window and cops were called…. If you need a genre, 38 Special falls into Southern Rock. Following on the heels of Skynyrd's success, labels looked at bands like 38 Special, Molly Hatchett and Blackfoot. Does have that roll down the windows, hit the road feel.
@Texashog113 жыл бұрын
Considering that Donnie Van Zant, brother of Ronnie Van Zant of Skynyrd, was the leader of .38 Special, leads to understanding their southern rock sound. Plus Billy Powell who was the pianist for Skynyrd was in .38 Special also. Donnie went on to form the band Van Zant with his brother Johnnie which had most of their success in the 2000’s playing country.

In fact, a few friends and I formed a band to play in our Senior Variety Show right before graduation and we wanted to play this song (I was the drummer), but our singer backed out last minute and his replacement couldn’t hit the higher notes, so we switched gears and went with You Really Got Me (Van Halen version) instead. What a awesome band. They were big time back in the 70s. They had a lot of number one songs. I think one of the top 10 bands back then for sure. React to. Caught up in you

I love 38 Special they're from Jacksonville Florida and are among the luminaries of southern rock from Jacksonville with the others being Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, plus a whole host of other bands like Limp Bizkit ,yellowcake and Shinedown , I think there might be something in the water in Jacksonville

Great song! It’s always nice to see a live performance that can measure up to the studio version. 👍🌺✌️

Real southern rock! Don Barns is amazing, he's the singer, but after the lead guitarist left band Don learn the lead parts aswell.... he is a beast!

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned "Rockin' Into the Night", which is one of the few songs I know from them. (I don't think I've ever heard "Second Chance", even though apparently it was their biggest hit, reaching #6. But ballads sell, apparently.)
@jonlate45813 жыл бұрын
It may be their highest charting song, but it's DEFINITELY not their biggest hit.

I mentioned Rockin' Into the Night, it's one of my favourites and I hear it on the radio all the time, so yeah I was also surprised to see no one else mentioned it. I never even knew Second Chance was their song until I heard them sing it at a concert in 2012 I think. That song was from when Don Barns temporarily left the band and Max Carl took over lead vocals I found out. I had heard it on the radio before though. The song is alright but definitely not one of my favourites.

I was lucky enough to see 38 Special live in concert back in the early 80’s when I was in college. They were fantastic and sounded as great as they did on their albums! One of my favorite bands of my young adult life. Still love them.

One of my favorites, you can't go wrong with anything they have. The lead guitarist is Jeff Carlisi.

Hey, hope all’s well! This band was really good live. Early 80’s to late 80’s was their strongest time frame. Donnie van Sant, the younger bro of Ronnie (member of Lynyrd Skynyrd who died in the plane crash), was a pretty good guitarist…. The band was known for really solid guitar work, a groovy rhythm section, and Don Barnes smooth tenor lead vocals. Several great songs posted in the thread… Chain Lightnin’ is really good, Caught Up In You is another pop-sounding southern rocker. Check out the Outlaws, also I’m this genre… but a bit more hard-core cowboy sounding tunes!

I looked it up. It was released in February of 1981, so I can imagine it taking off over the summer of that year. It went to number 27 on Billboard's Hot 100 and to number 3 on the Rock chart.
