This song came out in the 80s. I think Huey Lewis is honoring the 'roots' of rock and roll from the 50s & 60s. It's like Bob Seger sings in his song - That Old Time Rock and Roll:. 'Today's music ain't got the same soul. I like that old time rock and roll. '

Rock and roll hasn't really been a genre since probably the 60s though. I agree totally with what Bob Seger said in the 80s about old time rock and roll. If you flip thru the radio, most of the music is pop and rap based and is disposable and will be forgotten with 5 years. Granted, you do have rock bands, but most haven't released new music in ages. The genre of classic rock gets extended more and more. What's crazy is a band like Linkin Park is now considered classic.

Truly one of the greatest 80's bands in my opinion. “Do You Believe in Love”, "Workin' for a Livin”, "Heart and Soul", "I Want a New Drug", "If This Is It", "The Power of Love", "Stuck with You", "Hip to Be Square", "Doing It All for My Baby", and "It's Alright" are all great songs to listen to. One of my favorite CDs of all time is “Time Flies…The Best of Huey Lewis & The News. I was on such a Huey Lewis kick in college in the early to mid-2000s and I played that CD to death.

It was 1983 when *Heart Of Rock and Roll* came across our airwaves. *Huey Lewis and The News* had some good hits to boot *:I Want A New Drug, Hip To Be Square, Back In Time, Doing It All For My Baby, Power Of Love, Workin' For A Livin', Stuck You, Bad Is Bad and Do You Believe In Love* made their way to our ears. To Answer Amber's question, yeah our parents had no idea what our music was with New Wave, Alternative and Heavy Metal also The beginnings of Rap, Hip Hop. And being in my fifties now, I don't always understand the new music of today but it doesn't make it all bad. As far as Bands being Huge *Foo Fighters and Kiss* are still doing arena tours. *Love ❤️ Peace ✌️ and Happiness 😃 Y'all !!*

Well, real rock and roll was dead by the late 80s as far as I was concerned at the time. It came back to life in 1991 with grunge and alternative, but when I was a freshman in highschool in 1989 my friends and I had many conversations about how real rock and roll was dead (we didn't consider butt rock glam hair bands and heavy metal "real rock" - we were raised on our parent's 60s and 70s rock) - around that time one of the only bands that we considered still holding it together was the Black Crowes. Then slowly, first Faith No More, then a couple others, then *boom* Nirvana and Pearl Jam hit the scene, and that music changed my brain's understanding of what music was.

I think the point of this song was, coming out of the 70's where disco ruled a lot of people were saying that rock and roll was dead. But if you look at new genres like punk and metal you'll find the 'heart' of what rock and roll is, within them. They may look a bit different, but it's still there.

I’m a 70 year old woman, and the music I enjoyed as a kid, a teenager, young adult, etc. is part of my soul & spirit! So even if my health fades, my love of that music never will. Huey Lewis was a great band to see in concert back in the '80s. I saw him with the Tower of Power Horns and loved it! He also had a cameo appearance in the classic movie "Back to the Future". In an early scene when "Marty's" band is auditioning for a school function, they start playing a Huey Lewis song, only to be interrupted by one of the judges to be told "It's just too loud". That judge is Huey!

You've just opened up a deep, deep rabbit hole. At least a decade worth of hits. "It's Hip To Be Square" came out about the time of MTV. Lyrics say: " I like my bands in business suits, I watch them on TV". This was also the time when "Bad" became Good. So they wrote a song "Sometimes Bad Is Bad". Message delivered in a humorous way. Thanks!

Second only to AC/DC... INXS are probably the greatest Australian musical export ever... Hit after hit just dominated the airwaves through the 80s and 90s... Michael Hutchence... Well what can you say?... Probably one of the most charismatic front men to ever grace a stage. There was a movie made about INXS that was approved by the remaining members too.. Awesome movie that showed a side to Hutchence that so few people ever knew. So many memories tied into their music for me.

Now imagine hearing this in a crowded, darkened room where the only light is coming from arcade games and the jukebox. The music is competing with the "wokka wokka wokka" from PacMan and the footsteps and springing noises from Donkey Kong. Sinistar is yelling "Run! Run! Run!" You flip a buddy another quarter to plug into the jukebox, just so we can hear this song again. Total vibe.

I once heard a music critic say that this song, "The Heart of Rock 'n Roll" was a great tribute to all those small cities that _"the heart" of rock 'n roll_ came from...Buddy Holly (Lubbock, Texas), Elvis (born in Tupeldo, MS, raised in Memphis, TN), Chuck Berry, (St. Louis, MO), Jerry Lee Lewis _aka_ The Big Bopper (born in Ferriday, LA, raised in norther Lousiana), Bo Diddly (born in McComb, MS, raised mostly in Chicago, IL), Little Richard (born and raised in Macon, GA). And that NY, and LA were where most of the major rock 'n roll artists went to record their records once they became famous...but, the "heart" of rock 'n roll came from small cities in the USA. That was why those great rock 'n roll artists are shown in that video and why Huey mentions those small towns in this song. And that in those cities, the "heart of rock 'n roll is still beating". The music critics last comments at the time were valid. When Huey Lewis and the News released this song, the major bands were still, mainly, coming from those small towns, not New York and Los Angeles. I enjoyed watching and hearing your reactions. And yeah, Rock 'n Roll is dead now, at least the real Rock 'n Roll. It became Rock, then Pop, with mixtures of those two genres. What exists today does not even come close to what the 50's and 60's produced. The 70's to 80's Pop was great. The 90's were pretty good, but Pop was dying. After that..."Bye, Bye, Miss American Pie", "The Music Died".

Huey Lewis & and the News, are one of the best bands l have been fortunate enough to see when they did one of their rare tours of the UK. I have seen many many bands big and little, but the News have to go down as one of the best pure rock and roll/blues bands l have ever seen. Their unique style of joyful feel good music is a joy to see and hear. If you want to see a great fun video the watch ‘Stuck With You’ filmed in the Bahamas, When Huey Lewis played in my home town of Manchester, UK, my daughter who was 10 or 11 waited outside the stage door to get his autograph. The crowds pushed her up against the guard rails, and to his credit both Huey Lewis and his lead guitarist Jonny Colla spotted her getting crushed and both came to her rescue, pulled her through the rails and made sure she was alright. Needless to say, we both still love their music. So am thrilled you highlighted it, thank you. My recommendations are Stuck with you, and Working for a living.

In particular I don’t believe you’ve listened to Kim Carnes, Kenny Loggins, Sheila E, James Ingram or Jeffrey Osborn yet.

There was a feeling by some in the early 80s that Rock-n-Roll was dying with the introduction of the synthesizer. New Wave was in high gear. Euro Techno was on the rise. Also, the development of other studio technologies. Billy Joel's "It Still Rock and Roll To Me" touches on this topic a bit.
@jwthiers
@jwthiers 2 жыл бұрын
When you think of Rock and Roll from the 50's and 60's you are thinking you are thinking Lead Guitar, a bass guitar, and a simple drum kit and the apex of Rock and Roll can best be heard in bands of the late 60's like The Beatles or Rolling Stones when they add an electric piano. Starting in the very late 60's and early 70's the electric piano was being replaced with a synth.This is when Rock and Roll started to morph into something not quite rock and roll anymore, but still a rock feel. Is that dying? Not really sure, because when you really listen you can still pick out the Rock Roots. By the time Huey Lewis rolled around, "the old one was barely breathing, but the heart of rock and roll was still beating..."

Even rock itself was becoming harder edged, with AC/DC, then into the harder bands, speed metal, death metal, thrash. HL&tN was a total throwback to the 50's style, as exemplified here. Big bands, sax, no synth. Even now, though, they don't sound all that dated- more of a timeless sound. That's why you can still listen to them and not laugh at the sound.

Huey Lewis & the News was basically a “bar band” that made it big‼️And deservedly so. The "barely breathin'" line is just referencing the age of the originators of rock n roll. Artists like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis, etc. But, despite their age, their LEGACY-which is the SPIRIT of rock n roll lives on everywhere. Different clothes, different musical approaches, but same attitude and spirit.

True story: Huey Lewis learned to play harmonica backpacking around Europe. Also sadly he has lost the hearing in at least one ear if not both-but his was a voice (and this album specifically) that for me was in the soundtrack to my freshman year of college 1983/84.

He has Meniere’s disease. I have it too. The hearing loss is remitting. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being deaf as a post, and 10 being "normal" you might be a 5 one day, and a 2 the next. The hearing loss is bad, but the "drop attacks" of vertigo are the worst. Some days I have to hang on with both hands to keep from falling off the floor.

Oh man, there is so much to get into with Huey Lewis & the News. You guys will absolutely love them, I don’t think they have any bad songs. Their album Sports had so many top ten hits on it. Please check out more of this awesome band! I do think rock is pretty much dead in the current time, at least rock as I know it, and it makes me very sad. Huey tells you what the "Heart of R &R" is in the song; the backbeat. Bass drum on 1 and 3. One of the best bands of the '80s. Amazing musicians, and they all could just walk up to 5 microphones and harmonize in 5 parts. Deep rabbit hole, if y'all want to listen to more HL&TN. I also love how y'all got excited when the lyrics mentioned Tulsa and OKC. Y'all are my favorite Okies on YT. Huey Lewis & the News rocked the '80's. Album "SPORTS" is excellent. The blank looks on their faces represents the Disco, Punk Rock and the New Wave era's. Rock n Roll is the fabric from which all great music stems from...including all the use of sampling for Rap or Hip Hop.
