A couple of fun facts about this song: The original title was called "Escape". When the song became popular, people would go into record stores and ask the clerk "Do you have that pina colada song?" which is a reference to the lyric in the song. The record label had heard about this and decided to add in parenthesis (The Pina Colada Song). So, the full title of the song is "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)". This song also became the final #1 song of the 1970's, and the first #1 song of the 1980's. That was due to the fact that the song went to #1 on the Billboard charts in mid-December 1979, and stayed at #1 for several weeks going into 1980. No other artist or group has done that before.

When that song "Rapper's Delight" came out, people were flocking to record stores asking the clerk "Do you have song that goes hip-hop, a hippie-to the hip-hop"? which of course is the opening rhyme to the song. This is how the term "hip hop" came to be.

It was definitely funny but it's also one of those things that annoys me. I mean she has the typical response. OMGerd this guy is a scumbag planning on cheating on his lady, cut his dick off, he's the worst person in the world, etc etc. Then you find out the lady who put in the ad first that he was responding to turns out to be his girlfriend and its all of sudden not bad but funny. I mean, he was responding to the ad which meant she was planning on leaving him before he was planning on leaving her. Why is it that when a guy plans to leave a girl that he's a prick or the worst person in the world but when a girl plans to leave a guy its all good and must be his fault? Its one of the many annoying double standards out there.
@darthraider79352 жыл бұрын
@O. B. except it's not... as stated its the "usual" reaction. IF it was the woman cheating, which she was planning to as well in the song, as it was her advertisement that he was responding to, the reaction by most women is this... the guy must have been doing something wrong for the woman to cheat on them. Yet if its the guy cheating on the woman, then he's a prick thinking with just his dick. Its a lose-lose for men on this subject. IF the guys cheating, he's a dick, IF the woman's cheating its because the guys a dick!! Its been that way forever, instead of it being maybe just the woman was a cheater and its not just the guy being bad!!

Loved the reaction! I knew you two would fall off your chairs when you found out that they were writing to each other! They both needed a break from the same old routine! It's sounds bad at first, until you hear the whole song. Very clever lyrics to a true "CLASSIC" song. GREAT REACTION YOU TWO!

I was also in my 20's the first time I really heard all the lyrics to this song (after hearing it a million times in my childhood). Instead of thinking it somehow exonerated him, I kept yelling, "You two are both so bad!!" while at the same time laughing my ass off, lol.

So glad that you two actually pay attention to the lyrics of the songs you react to. Pretty sure that you don't have a copy of them as the video is playing so your reactions are priceless. There are so many songs that you can get lost in and not understand the meaning behind, but you guys pay very good attention. Love your show...

I believe Rupert was one of a few song writers who decided to actually sing their own songs. Not talking an actual singer song writer, talking about song writers who write and sell their music to artists. That's why he has the "middle school science teacher" vibe look. Dude is talented. Had the voice just not much on stage presence. Great song. Grew up in that era.

Your reaction to this song is hands-down my favorite so far. This song was a big hit my senior year in high school so I'm well familiar with the punchline. There's a great interview with Rupert Holmes regarding this song on the KZbin channel "The Professor of Rock." Anyway, loved your reaction. You paid attention to all the lyrics and I suspected the last verse was going to get to you both.

A fun thing about this song is that "Pina Colada" was "Humphrey Bogart" a few minutes before recording. He wanted to see if the story worked so he ran through the song for the band to see if they could see the twist before he got to it in the song. As he prepped to sing it the first time he thought the original chorus of "If you like Humphrey Bogart" had a noir feel and he wanted something fun and light so he picked a tropical drink. That one choice informed the rest of the song.

He did the singing in one take. Never sang the song before and changed some lyrics. He wanted to sing it to see if others figured it out before the end. First time he sang is what was recorded. Amazing story

To his credit, David Goldstein (a.k.a. Rupert Holmes) is a noted author, composer and musician. His lyrics are a testament to his genius, as he is not only a gifted artist, but a clever storyteller.

I was sitting here, cracking up every time you paused it to voice your reaction at that point, BECAUSE I KNEW WHAT WAS COMING!!!! Your reactions were PRICELESS!!!! If you want to hear some authentic beach music, try some Jimmy Buffett "Margaritaville".

He rewrote the lyrics to the song the night before going into the studio. He worried the surprise ending would be given away early so he recorded it straight through to see if his guitar player would figure it out. He realized his lyrics didn't fit the rhythm of the song so he squeezed them in or stretched them out to fit the music. He planned to fix the lyrics and re-record later but ran out of time and figuring it was just an album filler track he left it as is. The record company surprised him by wanting to release it as a single. That's why the song has a conversational feel to it that makes you pay more attention to the story.

Great reaction from both of you! As a song and poetry writer myself, I have always paid close attention to song lyrics. Any song can have a good beat, that's easy, but to tell an interesting story withing a great song is true talent!

This was the last #1 hit of the 1970's in the USA. You have to listen to the story, because it's pretty wild! There were some great interviews with him. The song was originally supposed to say "If you like Humphrey Bogart." He changed it at the very last moment as he was about to do the vocals. Before that, he told the producers & other execs to listen carefully to the lyrics. He wanted to know if any of them saw the twist coming. None of them did. They were all blown away!
