The Doobie Brothers makes for a great evening! This is the great Tom Johnston on lead vocals, long before Michael Mcdonald.

@@TonyM1961I get that comment and where it comes from. And I can appreciate it. But I have to admit, I love both eras. And I don’t call the MM era, “pop”. I call it R&B/soul. But it is very different from the “roots rock” era of Tom. But again, no accounting for taste, and I love both.

@TonyM1961 I have nothing against Michael Mcdonald. I think he's an extremely talented singer-songwriter-musician, and what he does is great. But the pre-Michael Doobie Brothers era will always be the best for me. I never liked the change. I was happy with them the way they were.

I’ve seen the Doobie Brothers seven times with seven different lineups. Every show is magical and unforgettable. First time I seen them was in 1973 and Styx opened up for them. that is when Styx first single “Lady “ and “ Light up Everybody “ hit the charts. I was 14 years old. My friend had a press camera, and we talked the ushers and security into letting us on the side of the stage for the concert. They thought we were from some local newspaper or magazine. We watched the Doobie brothers get in their limousines with silky boxer robes and snapped many pictures. A memory I will never forget . the 70s were the best.

Again, I get this comment, where it’s coming from and appreciate it. But I love all of the Doobies and feel that it’s all “real”. The first stuff is very different from the MM soul/r&b era. And it’s understandable why some people would only like one or the other. But I love both.

@@RabbiSteve1 I'm glad they continued to be successful after Michael joined but I didn't buy another album after that from them. There's very few artists voices that I don't like, but his voice hits me like fingernails on the chalkboard for some people. I wore out the first three albums though.

I think the majority of people who like the Doobies will tell you they like the pre Michael McDonald Doobies Brothers much more. Tom Johnston was the lead singer on this one. This was pre Michael McDonald. He joined the band when Johnston was battling an illness and then stayed on for a few albums before they broke up. Johnston and Patrick Simmons sang lead depending on who wrote it or who had the best voice for it. Love this album, "The Captain and Me." Always thought it was the best they did. It's in my top 5 all-time albums. Remember, when Michael was there, he was a prolific writer and began singing lead on many songs.
