"Show Biz Kids" was from their Countdown To Ecstasy" album. At that point they still had a touring band but that would not last much longer. They had been bringing in other musicians, and this time they had Rick Derringer playing that slide guitar. Derringer was a regular with Johnny Winter's and with Edgar Winter's bands...before that he had been a member of The McCoys which had that hit single "Hang On Sloopy" in the mid 60s. The regular road band had Skunk Baxter and Denny Dias as the guitarists, both great lead men. They brought in Elliot Randall to solo on "Reelin' In The Years." Around the time of Pretzel Logic, Donald and Walter decided to stop touring and just make albums. Baxter and Dias then left because they wanted to play out. Since then Donald and Walter have brought in guys like Larry Carlton (Don't Take Me Alive) Jay Graydon (Peg) Steve Khan, Hugh McCracken, Dean Parks. Walter Becker played a number of leads as well. Since they reformed Steely Dan in the early 90s the longest tenured member of the band on lead guitar has been Jon Herrington. Man that guy is awesome.

A fun thing I've noticed about the raucous, chaotic ending of this song is that it's a crossover/homage to the music of War which was also a top band at the time. The random vocal callouts are similar to those heard (in Spanish) in War's big hit "The Cisco Kid" which had been released just eight months earlier. And Becker's closing harmonica riffs are a dead ringer for Lee Oskar's riffs in that and other War songs; in fact if the credits didn't say otherwise I would have sworn that was Oskar himself playing on "Show Business Kids".

Ooh, I can't believe I missed this!!! THANK YOU! This was the set closer for their "Pretzel Logic" tour, after which Donald Fagen decided he didn't really like touring and the band stopped doing it for quite a while. So this was ALMOST the last song people heard live from Steely Dan… …ALMOST, because they also would play an encore; just one song, that was never officially released. "This All Too Mobile Home" has many recordings on KZbin and on unofficial concert CDs, but I don't know if you want to track it down. It is *damn* worth it, though. If you're more conventionally-inclined, try "King of the World". Damn, Rick Derringer is really working that guitar here, isn't he? And yes, "Lost Wages" is a joke nickname for "Las Vegas", and that's what the backing singers are singing.

Jay! Amber! Another great reaction to another awesome Steely Dan song. So, they had a number of different guitarists throughout their career. Originally, on their first two albums, they were more of a regular touring band. And Jeff “Skunk” Baxter was their lead guitar player. And he played a lot of their leads. But not all! They often had guests who sat in, and did some of their most iconic guitar solos and leads. And Walter Becker, who was co-writing partner with Donald Fagen (who sings lead on almost every song they ever did), doubled on bass and guitar. On this song, this was guitar legend Rick Derringer, who played with both Edgar and Johnny Winters among other important moments in rock and roll history. Walter and Donald basically fired the band after the third album from then on, Steely Dan was a studio only band, with whomever Walter & Donald hired to be on their masterpiece albums, such as AJA, GAUCHO, ROYAL SCAM and KATY LIED. And if you really gotta give the people what they want and that’s not just a slogan, please give us “Aja” and “Deacon Blues” (for starters). Both of these are off of what many consider their greatest album, AJA. And then there’s more places you can go on some of the albums you have already tasted. But give the people what they want: “Aja” and “Deacon Blues”. You will thank all of us who have been asking for these for years.

Speaking of eclectic, Haley Reinhardt is as versatile as they come. No pyrotechnics, no outrageous costumes, no fancy choreography or backup dancers. Just vocal talent with great musicians behind her. She rocks out with “What is and What Never Should Be” Wild Horses for a gentler rock with Slash on 12 string acoustic guitar She covers Adele and Norah and reactors say she sounds like one or the other even when she is not stone of their songs. Aretha’s chain of fools. Several of her original songs are soulful and bluesy. When she goes torch singer on rat pack era style performances she really shines. She puts a bossa nova twist on Taylor Swift’s lover and it becomes a perfect jazz club performance (with a great sax solo from the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra along with the rest of the instrumental break) I could go on I am obsessed with Haley’s performances and you will be too once you hear her.

You guys really like Steely Dan and so do I. You guys commented about the guitarist...who is this person? The fact of the matter is Steely Dan used a virtual who's who of studio musicians. The sound from the guitarists is always different because they hired all these different guys for different songs. Here is a partial list of guitarists: Larry Carlton, Jeff Skunk Baxter,Denny Dias, Jay Graydon, Dean Parks, Elliot Randall, and many more. Steely Dan started as an actual group but boiled down to Donald Fagen and Walter Becker...and then whoever they would hire for studio work. They became basically a studio "band". So any way maybe try Black Cow next from Steely Dan....a lot of horns and tasteful keyboard and great vocals. I had to look it up but a "black cow " is New York slang for a root beer float...root beer and ice cream. If you do Chicago again could you try Dialogue 1&2 studio version. It has everything you guys like. 😊
