Your discussion of how Jennifer brings purity and delicateness to Joe's gruffness is spot on. Here's what Jennifer herself had to say: "I always thought the pairing had a strong ring of truth to it. It was so unlikely, because Joe has this well-known, very raw, masculine energy. I was less well known and had this very vulnerable, quintessential female energy and we were very polarized, as men and women often are these days. But we met in the middle." She is a terrifically underrated and versatile singer, able to sing with an ethereal sweetness (in the verses) but also with strength and power (in the choruses). She always serves the song and never oversings, which is essential when singing with someone as emotive as Joe Cocker.

This song is so beautiful, it's almost spiritual. I was raised in the Assemblies of God church, and they are so strict on music and stuff. But my pastor was so moved by this song, he played it during a Sunday Morning service at the time this song was popular. He just stood there at the pulpit taking it in with us. I was like 13, and I loved rock and popular music, so I had already heard it. I can't ever remember him playing a secular song ever, with this one exception. He said he felt like The Lord moved on his spirit to play it for the congregation. I don't know why, but I cried tears during that service while the song was playing. 💖 Excellent reaction.
