This was their first Top 40 hit in the US, in 1974. A year later, "Bohemian Rhapsody" came out, and the rest is history. I recommend "You're My Best Friend" for your next one. For your next Meat Loaf song, I recommend "I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)".

I was around sixteen when that came out and was seriously besotted with my new blonde blue-eyed girlfriend with the face of an angel and the figure of Ursula Andres, whilst the morals of an uninhibited she-devil. It was winter (freezing cold and raining constantly) and the only place we could get it together was at the home she shared with her parents and brothers. There were no "metaphors" as far as I was concerned. I just wanted her entire family tied down so I could get at the goodies. LOL

I love how much you appreciate Freddie Mercury's stage performance as well as his incredible voice. He was unique and gifted musician and I was very much heartbroken when we learned he had AIDS and then when he passed away so soon after. I think it hit so close to home for me because I was hospice worker caring for AIDS patients for much of the 1980s. But I am thankful for the legacy of amazing music that he left behind and for the remaining members of Queen who have so diligently kept the music alive.

“The Red Special" as Brian May's guitar is called or sometimes “The Fireplace.” That’s the guitar that Brian May (guitarist of Queen and physics researcher) began building with his father circa 1963, when Brian was about 16 years old. Lacking money but not ingenuity, the father-son team built the guitar using materials found around the home. The neck of the guitar was fashioned from an 18th-century fireplace mantel, the inlays on the neck from a mother-of-pearl button. For the body, they used wood from an old oak table. Then the bricoleurs combined a bike saddlebag holder, a plastic knitting needle tip, and motorbike valve springs to create a tremolo arm. He still plays it as of last night at the Queen + Adam Lambert concert in Belfast Ireland.

Appreciate you detailing that. To my ears, that sound is completely Brian's own. I know no one had ever sounded like that before, and I don't think anyone ever really has since. Possibly even guitarists inspired by him still sort of steered clear of copying him too much, just because it is immediately identifiable.

From what I understand, the microphone thing comes from and incident very early in the band. He grabbed the mic and the adjustment knob was not properly tightened, so the whole upper half come with the mic. Freddie played it cool, like it was supposed to happen and then showed us what he does with!

So glad you've got back to the greatest group ever to have existed ( in my opinion) For more classic Queen try "We are the Champions" "We Will Rock You" "Somebody to Love" "Show must go On" or Freddie's duet with Montserrat Caballe "Barcelona". Please show some respect to the other members of the group. Brian May on lead guitar, John Deacon on Bass and Roger Taylor on drums. All four members wrote hits for the band. Much love from England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

If you want to see more of gorgeous mid 70s long-haired Freddie, you really must check out: You Take My Breath Away - Live at Hyde Park and White Queen - Live at Hammersmith. Two stunning songs in two quite different ways, Freddie in sensual/romantic mood in the first, alone on piano, shushing a rowdy crowd at a free concert, then holding them spellbound for a few magical minutes. In the second, he puts it all out there in a song about unrequited/unnoticed love written by Brian which includes a mind blowing instrumental section, starring Freddie and Brian on duelling piano and lead guitar.
